We went on a 2 week European river cruise a couple of years ago. It was on a higher end cruise line and everything was included. Flights, transfers, food, drink, tips, excursions, etc. The only extra we had to pay for was the 2 night stay at a hotel in Amsterdam before the cruise. We are going on our first ocean cruise in May to Alaska. It does feel like we are getting nickel and dimed to death with all the extra charges. It's feels a bit dishonest. When we booked the river cruise, once you picked the cabin type, it gave you the price including all taxes and fees. Much better model in my opinion.

Yes, you may think that I am being a little unfair , but a large proportion of all these extra cost items that LLana has brought attention to are curiously American based or attributed to their culture.I get the impression that many of our American fellow cruisers are beginning to get fed up with them too.

It very much depends on the culture that the cruise line is aiming at. Over here the two popular cruise lines include gratuities in the cruise fare and there is no extra tip per drink. They are catering to their British clientele that would vote with their feet if there was an American style tipping culture on board. The packages offered tend to match your experience of the river cruise. NCL have tailored their free at sea package to Europeans who abhor at what Americans consider to be the norm. Although the package costs slightly more there are no extra tips which means no nasty surprises at the end of a cruise.

If they even pay salary, when ai worked on Norwegian Cruise line 15 year ago, my salary was $358 a month. There wasn't even 1 day off in 8 month contract. If crew member get sick and can't work, they have to pay other crew out of pocket to do their job. It is slavery! people work on ships out of desperation or, in my case, in hopes to travel the world with no money.

When people stop buying all that Wifi, Liquor packages and so on extras, the cruises lines will lower the prices. But people keep accepting and paying and they keep bringing it up the prices. I don’t buy alcohol packages, not internet packages. I just use and enjoy what is complimentary. I buy every other night a glass of Prosecco and that is all. I understand people that have to work and be connected. For people that work doing cruise content the internet should be free. Other people that is why you are on Vacation 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 that is my humble opinion.

Also some cruise lines ( you have to check to see if the one your going on does or doesn't) will let you bring alcohol on board. You can keep it in your room and drink there or takes drinks around the ship with you. Also some won't let you bring alcohol into your room but you can buy a bar package, that usually a bottle of something and mixers for alot less than it cost to buy drinks at the bars.

We are big fans of Viking Ocean, and this video reminds me of several reasons why... WiFi - included Transfers to/from ship - included if you book airfare through Viking Drinks package - only required for premium wines and liquor, or for alcoholic drinks not at lunch or dinner (can also be purchased a la carte) Spa and gym - included; massage services are available at a cost Room service - included Dining - including at specialty restaurants; no items require surcharges All activities on board - included Shore excursions - one included free at each port, other choices at cost Adult areas - the whole ship is adult only Laundry - self-serve available at no cost; other services are available, cost varies by cabin class When you add what other companies charge for these services, the cost difference for a Viking cruise becomes a lot less than it might appear.

Longtime cruiser. One way to avoid many of these charges is with onboard credit. Since we book our annual cruise onboard for the next year, one of the perks can be onboard credit. Then the next twelve months, you work the system on all fronts. Watch for price drops. Watch for onboard credit promotions. Watch for promotions where gratuities are prepaid by the cruise line. When we book onboard, we select our stateroom. At this point, we don’t worry about the price. Our most recent cruise, we kept vigilant during the 12 months and called when we saw a promotion. The price dropped twice during this period. Over that period, we got the crew gratuities prepaid, saving about $600. And our onboard credit was a combined $1150. It actually was difficult to spend all the onboard credit. There was $80 left unspent and we had it go to crew appreciation. Ways of amassing onboard credit: military or veteran $100. Purchase stock in the cruise line. Our annual cruise is three weeks. For any of the Carnival owned lines, a three week cruise gets $250 onboard credit.

Another cost that might not be planned for is parking. You mentioned port parking. But people might forget about airport parking. I pre-paid my garage parking (refundable) in early January for a flight & cruise in November 2024 at around a 45% discount. I know where I'm parking, where my space should be, how to get there, and how to catch the shuttle to Departures. Much better than arriving at a strange airport and hunting for a place to park when you arrive.

So, on my last cruise, my husband and I didn't purchase the drink package. We wanted to see how much we would spend on alcohol, coffees, smoothies, and non-alcoholic beverages (for kids). We didn't limit ourselves at all. We ended up spending about 100 less. However, that is not the point. At one point in our cruise, a waiter asked if we wanted a pitcher of margaritas or mojitos for just $25. I was surprised at the cost and mentioned that to the waiter. He told me that they are trained to offer different options depending on whether a customer has the drink package or not. Since we did not, he was trained to offer us a pitcher of alcohol. It seemed much more cost efficient to me since just two drinks are approximately $25.

I am aboard the Majestic Princess. I was prepared to see additional costs for lobster tails, but was taken aback in the Reserve dining room at lunch to see that I would have to pay $19 for a seafood salad, as well as two other "special" entrees for $20. The number of options in the main dining room has been cut back. However, the food presentation is gorgeous, service is excellent, and food tasty. We are trying a specialty restaurant tonight. We'll see how that goes.

For those concerned with paying for all the different add-ons, it does feel like you are being nickel & dimed to death, if you look at it from that perspective. However, another way to look at it is that many of these items & services are optional, and if you are on a budget and want to forego them, you can. Charges on all-inclusive cruises may be simpler, but it makes no sense to me as a non-drinker, for example, to be paying for drinks I'll never have, or (as someone who likes to disconnect while on vacation) being charged for wi-fi I'll never use, and so on.

Nice videos. You should branch out, and do travel videos beyond ocean cruises. Speaking of cruises, it appears to me that they are nickel and diming you on everything! Wow. If you pay to be on the ship, you should be able to enjoy all the amenities like roller coasters for example, for free. We are NOT going on any cruises, because we refuse to be held hostage for several days, getting our wallets squeezed for every last dollar.

This is why I love cruising Virgin Voyages because when you get onboard, you don’t need to bring your wallet out at all. There are some optional things and foods on board that cost, but you don’t have too. Most everything is included. Great points pre and post cruise that there are costs. Flights, transportation to and from port, pet sitter, child minding services if leaving the kids at home, trip essentials or new outfits, valid passport renewal cost. Great video!

I think all these items should be added if people want them. The problem is the cost of these items is out of control. I just paid $164 for internet on 1 device for my 8 night cruise on Royal. Absolutely nuts!! This is a necessity for most and I think they know it so they jack up the price. I don’t mind paying for it but come on now…..make it affordable PLEASE!

iLANA, have you done any videos on being assigned a guaranteed room at the embarkation point rather than a pre assigned cabin? I'm being offered a Club Balcony on the Getaway soon but I have heard warnings about doing this. I guess it's better to book in advance and be sure. Any opinions? This an unfortunate effect from the time constraints placed on MDs by HMOS/PPOs. Many are limited to 15-20 min. Not enough time to look over a complicated chart AND do an exam.

We just got home from sailing on the Emerald Princess through the Panama Canal... 15 night Cruise! We had 2 Formal Nights, 1 Dress to Impress, and the rest for Smart Casual - these were for all the Main Dining Rooms. My husband took a suit because he 'wanted' to wear a suit...there was a mix of Suits, nice shirt/nice pants...and even bermuda shorts and a button up shirt...and it was not a big deal at all... as long as you were not in trunks and flip flops, they let you into the dining room...this Formal Attire is NOT strictly adhered to... you could DEFinately wear nice tan or black shoes with your preferred outfit...honestly, if you asked me right now, what men were wearing on their feet for MDR dinners...I could not really even tell you...I was too busy looking at my menu options! Princess was great! Food, Drink and Service were all excellent...we were very impressed.

Great question. Formal night these days is a dressy night (not black tie). 2 suit with 2 different shirts is perfect. You can even get away with only a dress shirt & pants if you aren’t into suits. A thought for shoes, a comfortable black shoe might be versatile

The pricing in the US is so confusing. It's not only the cruises. But you see this great cruise price, then suddenly taxes a fees appear when picking your room, then at the end there is a huge gratuity cost. Ilana, is it like that in Canada? I wish it could just be one price upfront. Great video!!!!! You reminded me to add the cost of uber to my budget.

I’m Canadian and found when pricing out any cruise destination package with taxes etc, but no drink package of any kind or wifi etc, the cruise cost per person is pretty much triple what the initial posted cost is.

New taxes on your drink package per drink while in ports Puerto Rico 11%, NYC is 9%, France is closer to 30%. None of this they disclosure before cruise but they'll put a sign at the bar which your bartender will let let you know as well.

I'm doing my first NCL cruise in June. NCL offers their "free at see" package that includes air transportation. About a month ago, received, what I thought was some sort of scam. I thought that it was somebody pretending to be NCL, saying that I could reserve "good" flight times for a $150 up charge. (I assume that it was $150 per person) I now know that it wasn't a fake email. If for some reason, I had a life long enemy, working for NCL, they couldn't have given me worst flight times. On the day before the cruise, they have me arriving at 8:00AM. Trouble is, I can't get into my hotel until 2:00PM.... The flight home is even worse. My ship docks around 7:00Am, so I figure that I'll be there in time for a noon flight.....They booked me an 11:50PM flight, so I'll be at the airport for 12 hours. I checked and was told to like it or lump it. I could always cancel, but I'd have to pay a 25% penalty. I think that I'll do my own air booking from now on.

NCL will book the cheapest, not the more convenient flights, so yes you’ll surely have better flights if you book them yourself. Lesson learned for me! Never again.

I think MSC still has the most extra fees. Some shows are included, but other shows cost extra. They only have buffet or dining room included in the price every other restaurant is additional cost. Then things vary on cost by the experiences you book Bella - Yacht club.

Some Hotels offer Shuttle Service from hotel to Port; we used an Uber from our Hotel in LAX to cruise terminal and had no issues at all...I am sure it would be fine from Ft. Lauderdale to terminal...just give yourself lots of time...better to be early!

Two things to remember. 1) While many hotels offer a shuttle to the cruise port, there is usually a charge. If you have two or more people, Uber may be cheaper. 2) Since I never used Uber before my last cruise, I went ahead and booked the ride three days in advance. I paid $24 for the ride. Had I waited until the hour before, I could have had an Uber ride for $13. The shuttle would have been $34. Hope that helps. I recommend the Wyndham Garden at Danio Beach.

Basically, no. Princess has their medallion net that is supposed to enable you to text other passengers in your party, but I do not know about other lines. It did not work well when we were cruising in October 2023, but I hear it is better now - we used Instagram, but we had an internet package. If you have an internet package, you may be able to text between two iPhones, but not iPhone to Android without something like Instagram. Cell service when you are out to sea is expensive, even if you have a European package through your cell company. Do some research to be sure.

Singles pay as much for a cabin as for two people. You may be better off finding someone to tag along and share your cabin and the cost. Read everything on the cruise company's website so you know about the costs and listen to everything Ilana said. She covered it well. Plus, there are KZbin videos (like this one) and Facebook pages where you can ask questions. Don't forget insurance.

I’ve been reading and watching updates on solo travel and it seems a number of cruise lines are modifying cabins to create smaller single occupancy ones. Solo travellers are a growing segment in the cruise industry, hopefully more to come. I’m not a single but I have family members who travel solo. Hopefully you can make it happen!

As a first time cruiser am shocked at how much stuff is not part of a cruise like why is arcade not free for kids drink should be part of the fare and if you want to eat anything other then buffet you need to pay for it.
