I bought a 2000 Bad Boy Mower with a 23 HP Kawasaki motor on it.Yes it had a bunch of hours on it. I used it 2 seasons and it started overheating and boiling over all the time (liquid cooled motor).No big deal, accepted it was older....Replaced it with one from small engine warehouse. Heres the sad part... Used it almost 2 seasons and the motor locked up with warranty being expired(I get that too). Heres the reality of the mess ...Everyone raved about Kawasaki liquid cooled motors. Honestly,I think they are junk. When that mower went bad I parked it and went and bought a brand new 72" Spartan with a 32 HP Air cooled Briggs(Vanguard) motor on it. Not 1inch of problems in 4 years.still rollin strong. I am considering buying one of these Predator air cooled motors to repower my old 2000 Bad Boy because they are cheaper and ill bet far more reliable than a liquid cooled Kawasaki motor.I will most likely sell the bad boy because my Spartan is Golden...I never had good luck with Kawasaki and ill bet compared to one of these it couldnt be any worse. This is what id recommend ....first id make sure the shaft is the same diameter. (my old Kawasaki was 1-1/4"on the shaft diameter.) You can always drill new motor mounting holes but you may have to shim the motor up to align properly with mounting height. ZTs are pretty basic especially the older ones.

does it have a fuel pump ? Maybe that is the reason ???? I know that some of them have a cutof on the carb bowl so when you cut the power it shuts a selinoid like the 400 series does so the choke helps bring fuel to the engine ! What is your preferance on oil to break-in and run full time ? Do you use a synthetic ? Any way I don't know just thinking outloud ! thanks for taking us along !
@DoingItCheap7 жыл бұрын
I use the oil that is recommended. As far as break-in oil, I just use the same that I am gonna run in the engine full time. You sure don't want to mix viscosities. Apparently a LOT of folks are using the choke to start their engines. It is not a problem, just something I am not accustomed to. But that is why I do these reviews..... so we can all learn from one another..... and one thing is for sure.... IF I don't like something, I WILL tell you !!! Thanks for watching !!!

So how long did you have oil in there before starting it and did you have it sit in the engine? Or after you put oil in it you put no gas and just let it turn over a few times?
@DoingItCheap7 жыл бұрын
You can start it right after you put oil in it. I have pulled a lot of these predator engines apart prior to running to do some mods and the factory oiled the engine at assembly, just didn't ship full of oil.

I have a 285 John Deere that has the 18hp Kawasaki FD590V liquid cooled engine that I am seriously thinking about swapping out for a Predator Engine. It’s very hard to find anyone here in KY that will work on the Kawasaki engines unless you are willing to pay a very premium price. The Predator engine is looking better and better to me. It seems like everyone that I talk to really likes the Predator engines. I have one of the older blue 6.5hp Harbor Freight engines on a rear tine roto-tiller that is a real performer. Best Regards From Central KY.

Good idea putting in the oil first. Luckily HF is on top of this problem by putting low oil cut off switches on the 13 and 22 hp. engine's so if no oil was installed the engine wouldn't start anyway but it's A good habit to get into.

hey pa pa. mine came with a round gas tank. it also has a little vacuum fuel pump just like the one on you cub cadet. mine cub cadet has one too. it is a little round plastic, black, that operates on a vacuum hose into the engine. it should have three hoses. one running in and two running out. one to the carbs possibly two cause twin cylinder. one just provides vacuum to pump fuel to carbs. they are Chinese clone of Hondas engine. very good and reliable. any way mine came with a tank from the factory. so if the tank was missing then the vacuum fuel pump may too. look at you cub cadet and you will see the pump in the fuel line. keep it up good show.

Thanks to the USA Federal govmint and the EPA, all these small engines are run as lean as possible to cut down on emissions, so they don't run or start as they did in the good ole days. They all have fixed jets that some pencil pusher says is good enough to run, I like the old ones with an adjustable man needle, turn that thing out till she starts smoking and missing and then turn it in till she clears up and runs smooth.

You always choke a Predator...
@backroads827 жыл бұрын
That looks like a nice engine. Bet it will have plenty of power. The starting issue is most likely that it is new and needs broke in like you said. While it should work fine, your gas tank set up may have something to do with it. May need something that drains from the bottom so there is constant pressure on the fuel. When it is choked it will cause a "suction" so your set up will work great. If it is not choked the siphon flow may be getting interrupted with less suction just enough that it is making it harder to start.....or it could be something totally different...lol Either way it looks like you got a good one there!
@DoingItCheap7 жыл бұрын
Well the siphon effect is doing nothing except helping the flow get to the engine and maintaining the constant pressure you mentioned. And there is a fuel pump with the three hoses just like on a briggs twin cylinder on my Cub Cadet. I have to choke my Cub Cadet most of the time also, just a quick pull and push on the knob is all. Wanna see something crazy? Look for 670 cc on youtube and watch what these two kids did with this engine and a cheap go kart frame !! 47 mph and wheelies !!!

@DoingItCheap7 жыл бұрын
Not gonna run it fast without a load for now, don't want to blow it up !!!
@flatliner27137 жыл бұрын
Just start and pull back. The choke will rev it up as well. Have 2 Briggs that are old. One from the early 70's, and one from the early 90's. Been done this way for decades. Still haven't blown one. What are you considering "under load"? Just curious.There is no load at startup on an engine, unless someone is using it for that purpose. If there is a load at startup, it will not last long anyway. Just saying. Not trying to argue at all, but if it was on a mower, you always rev it up to full throttle before you engage the blades, unless you want it to die. They only run around between 3060 and 3600 rpm anyway wide open. Load or not. If it were a 2 stroke I would have to agree. Hope I haven't pissed you off.
@DoingItCheap7 жыл бұрын
Of course you haven't pissed me off..... I want folks to comment back and forth so we can discuss and learn from one another. I HAVE blown small engines by running them wide ass open, but that was because I manually overrode the governor. Same thing about your mower...... remember, then engines have a governor on them to prevent to high an RPM !!!! Hope I haven't pissed YOU off !!! LOL !!!
@flatliner27137 жыл бұрын
Not at all. Of course without that governor it would hit 6000. And of course it would be bye bye. Unless.....Was just saying. Have a Great One.

Predators just need choked until they are fully warm! Plus you need 3/4 throttle.
@gunlover19555 жыл бұрын
I have the answer for you, I know this is an old story, but the EPA has these engines set up so lean they can't start without the choke. Heck they can barely run with the little fuel they get into them, re jet the crab and then all will be good.
@DoingItCheap5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I noticed yesterday that the Kohler engine on my Cub Cadet lawn tractor requires a quick on and off of the choke.
@banditgrizzy19552 жыл бұрын
No need to rejet the carb.. there is an air fuel mixture screw that just needs adjusting a little.. but only adjust it when it is at operating temperature, that goes for the high and low side screws also...then everything be fine

Just replaced the engine on a Woodmizer sawmill and it's a cold natured bitch. You have to choke every time you start it. It's a $3000 Kohler. I have a go cart with a predator motor and you can let it set for six months and it starts first or second pull. Take care.

Mine is a Westcoaster which is just about the same thing. The crankshaft coming out of the original Onan engine is much lower than the Predator. It isn't necessarily the height of the engine, but the distance from the bottom to the crankshaft. And as you know, we sit right above the engine itself.

Repowerspecialists has a 22 hp Honda twin engine kit they sell to fit the Truckster. This engine is pretty much clone of it. I believe they use a new lower crossmember mount to lower the engine to fit the alignment. Wouldn't be that hard to fabricate similar for the Predator.

Some of my small engines seem to start easier on high octane ethanol free gas.
@banditgrizzy19552 жыл бұрын
Never use high octane or alchohol ethanol content fuel. It will burn out the valves, rings, and at times pistons over a short time. Sure the right fuel costs a bit more but the engine will last MUCH LONGER. These small engines are not made to take the extreme heat that fuel burns at. This advise comes from my grandfather who worked for John Deere his whole life retired and had a small engine repair shop the entire time 70+ years.

In other words up to it's red line is safe period. It's why those engines have governors, so that won't happen. Typically modern cars use rev limiters.

You do you and I will do what I have known and experienced for the past 55 years. (I am in my sixties) That is what makes the world go around. You had to use the word IF twice.

@@DoingItCheapPeople hold onto mechanical myths like a religion. The automotive engineers have it right regardless. Safe to it's rev limit spec. load or not. That engine has a governor it won't over rev. I am 65 and fixed lawnmower engines at 10.
