Touch lamps were very popular at one point but they lost popularity because the stopped working. If you go to a thrift store you will probably encounter a touch lamp.
So how do you fix it? There is a control board in the base that normally is the problem. It is also possible there is a bad wire or a faulty socket.
When ordering a touch lamp be sure to get one that can support your usage. When buying the bulbs make sure you get ones that are dimmable and match your control board. In this example, I use dimmable LED lights. The bottom two levels work great. The top level will sometimes "flicker". This is because we are hitting the limit of the board and it doesn't have quite enough power to fully light the LED bulbs. I have also used cheap candelabra bulbs. They work fine but they don't get as bright. The control board I have is rated for LED and Incandescent bulbs. Some are for LEDs only or Incandescent Only. Also, this control board is for three levels of light and an off. Some boards are on/off only. So make sure you look at what the board supports when you go to order the boards.
If you look closely, the original board is wired differently than what is shown in the replacement board diagram. It is wired on the white wire instead of the black one.

Thanks Priscilla, I like doing these small projects. I actually have repair another one since I filmed this. Normally, touch lamps can be found at yard sales and thrift stores pretty cheap. Now you can get a nice looking one and update it. I am thinking about making a light that is touch sensitive, but it is still in the planning stages.

My grandma passed away last month, she always had this lamp in her living room and I just got it to use in mine, luckily there’s a switch on the plug so I can still turn it on/off but was bummed to find out the touch function wasn’t working. I’m very excited to see there’s a chance I could restore it to its former glory, thank you for the tutorial:)

I’ve had a touch lamp sitting for the past 3 years because I could not follow the wiring instructions. None of the videos had the same color wiring or same number of wires. Your instructions were easy to understand although your module was very different from mine. Thanks so much!

You're very welcome. Please be careful though, each control module might be slightly different but the basics should be the same. And remember if in doubt, have a professional do it for you. Good luck!!!

I'm having trouble with the same lamp. Our dog had nipped the cord and I was hoping that was the problem but no luck. Time to find a new controller for it. I really do like the lamp and I'm looking forward to having it working as it should again. Great video!!

I have the same lamp, the problem is that the touch sensor kinda works. The light stays on well, but every time i touch it to turn it off, it switches back on after a while. I’ll probably open the lamp if it doesnt start working, and return back here to update how it went! Thank you for the advice!

Any advice on how to actually diagnose and repair the circuit board on the existing module? I find most of the replacement modules are absolute junk and either don't work as well as the original or burn out soonafter replacement. I'd like to be able to replace bad parts on the component level.
@ourheritageworks

No advice. I find most electronics these days are like that. They are either good or NOT good. There seems to be little in the middle. Since it is an integrated circuit board inside, I don't think a "normal"/"average" person would be able to fix them. Good luck.

I have the same type of lamp, followed your instructions. I always check with a non contact ac tester on the housing and I have electricity on the housing. I measured then with a multi meter and it shows me 92 volt. Is that safe to touch ?
@ourheritageworks
@ourheritageworks Жыл бұрын
First, I am not an electrician. Please contact a professional electrician if you have any concerns. The purpose of my video is to show how to change the module and not how the module works with the lamp. I have never tested the voltage or current on the surface of the lamp. It is a 120V system. I know that there will be some voltage and current on the surface because that is what makes it a switch. I DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH VOLTAGE OR CURRENT SHOULD BE THERE. The manufacturer of your control module should be able to tell you what to expect to be on the surface. AS A PURE GUESS - the voltage will be system voltage OR extremely low voltage (millivolts). Either way I would expect the current to be miniscule (milliamps or microamps). AGAIN PLEASE contact the manufacturer of the control module or a licensed electrician for more details. I'm sorry that I can't give you a better answer. IF you find out, it would be good information to add here.

Hello. I'm following your instructions but while I was removing the tube cover, some copper color scrapings fell out. I used pipe cleaners to get most of it out. Will this stop the lamp from working. I could send you a snapshot.
@ourheritageworks
@ourheritageworks Жыл бұрын
The answer is “I don’t know”. Even with a snapshot I might not know. I would have someone near you look at it. It might be nothing or it might be really important. You will need to find the source of the copper material and then determine if it is an issue. Please check it thoroughly and consult a professional if you are not 100% sure.

I did this twice and the control module blows out..what could be the issue?
@ourheritageworks
@ourheritageworks Жыл бұрын
Stephen without being there, it is really difficult to tell. It probably means that you have a short somewhere. Either the modules are defective (not likely if they are new but it does happen), the wires in the lamp are shorted, the sockets on the lamp could be bad, the wires to the module could be connected wrong or the modules might not match your country and voltage/current/wattage. My second video shows a little more about reading the diagrams and matching the module to the lamp. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqfXgn-ObMl7fbc In my second video, I discovered a bug had wedged itself into the socket. That would have created a short circuit if I had not found it. Another KZbinr had a similar issue, See Andrew Camarata's video kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6DPoZxpg8d_sNU @AndrewCamarata. It might help as well. Please if you are unsure, consult a professional.

wondering if you could help me out , i have a lamp just like yours and i changed the sensor in it and it works as soon as you turn it on , but after leaving it on for a while it want dim are cut on and off , what can i do???
@ourheritageworks
@ourheritageworks Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure. Initial thoughts… 1. did wires get crossed / is it wired correctly according to your switch specifications. 2. Is it a faulty switch/sensor? 3. Is the bulb rated for your type of sensor? The type of bulb must match the sensor (led, incandescent, halogen, etc) If it is working and then stops working it is probably an issue with the sensor. My guess it is underrated for the amount of current running through it and it is over heating. Hopefully an expert on the subject will jump in with a response. I am a DIY person and can only show my experience.

@@ourheritageworks Hi. I also have an older lamp like this that has three separate bulbs. My controller went out and I tried replacing it with one module and it popped when I turned the power on -didn’t work. Could you please tell me which module controller that you are using because my lamp is identical, thank you. 3:43 M.H.
@ourheritageworks
@ourheritageworks 7 ай бұрын
@@melissahollingsworth6101 My controller might or might not work for you. If you "popped it" you could have a short in one of the wires or a mismatched controller for the bulbs that you have installed. In the second/follow up video I discuss matching the controller to your lamp needs. No matter what please be careful and consult a professional if you aren't sure.

Where does the brown and grey wire go?
@ourheritageworks
@ourheritageworks Жыл бұрын
I’m not familiar with a brown and gray wire setup. There should have been a wiring diagram with the switch module. Be sure to follow that. The key is understanding the light you’re rewiring and being able to read the diagram from the switch manufacturer. I’m sorry I can’t give you a better answer. As a disclaimer/reminder, I am not an electrician. If you are unsure, please be careful and if needed contact a professional.

You can always just remove the module and directly rewire the neutral of the plug to the neutral of the light socket and the hot of the plug to the hot of the light socket. But now you'd have to unplug and replug the lamp if you want it on and off. Or just add in a switch to the cord.

It is going to depend on your needs and country. For 120V (U.S.), the model in this video is X0033SWHN5, but it could be different the next time I order. I am working on a follow up video. Search your needs how many volts, watts, etc.
