I just stumbled onto this video. This Ultralight ride is amazing to watch; You're literally out in the breeze(hoping no bird strikes either). It reminds me of a few parasailing rides in Avalon harbor in years past, though that's a much quieter sublime ride with height at above the Carnival cruise ships but recall looking down and seeing Sunfish that were deceivingly big and if one turned over to horizontal, they appears to be +- 20-25' long. Landing this Ultralight takes even more skill than an aircraft touching down on Catalina

@@HenryGyroLife I'll have to read up on that. With Ultralite , getting up to +-9,000 ft. for emergency glide procedure if necessary; how close to Catalina would you have had to be (in normal weather conditions)to safely land somewhere on the Island-if not at Catalina airport?
@HenryGyroLife2 жыл бұрын
@@TJKillip if I’m 9000 feet in the middle of the way (about 11 miles from the middle) I can glide to Catalina Airport without engine power. This is based on 8:1 gliding ratio.

+kennan conway Are you a pilot ? Please don't take anything fling as casual. Many people were killed themselves in trikes if they don't get proper training. Average people can fly a trike with 20 hours training in dual instruction. But that is a minimal. You have to keep practicing in order to fly in the weather.

I want to get my PPL so bad but it's so expensive with a certified aircraft. Wife thinks ultralights are dangerous. I think with a trike the visibility is so much better traffic is much easier to spot. Whats your thoughts on this.

I would like to know if you are under part 103 and if so, why did you have to get an N registration number for your trike? Also, for what purpose did you need to also get a transponder, thought they definitely are not needed under part 103? From a long time hang glider pilot who has kept an eye on ultralights since the inception of putting engines years and years ago on the quicksilver. Oh also, I’ve been an Airline Captain for over 40 years. Isn’t your total weight under 254 pounds or what? You might even be under the sport pilots license and your trike is considered Experimental. Anyway very curious why all the extra crap to be able to fly...
@HenryGyroLife5 жыл бұрын
DavethePilot these trikes are not ultralight but light sport aircraft. Registered with FAA and needs sport pilot license to operate it. I just use the word “ultralight” because vast majority people knows ultralight but not light sport.

Catalina! 22 miles! Impressive! My name is Bill Catalina. I try not to implant my video atop others but for the name similarity you might want to look at mine. Toward the end, a friend & I tried a 4 mile over water flight to an island off north Florida (later completed). "Drifter Flying" by William Catalina on KZbin. Enjoyed your video! Great job! Beautiful scenery of the island too!
@HenryGyroLife6 жыл бұрын
Bill Callahan thanks Bill. What is your origin of name came from ?
@billcallahan93036 жыл бұрын
Henry TrikeLife .....Henry! Thanks for not getting mad about my inserting my video. Callahan is my book name. Catalina is real. The origin is Italian. Grandparents arrived as Catalani from Ancona on the Adriatic Coast. Like many other immigrants of that era, they wanted to sound more American so they simply dropped the i and added an a. Cute! So sadly, my surname is not really Catalina! P.S. My book is Over & Back by Wild Bill Callahan on Amazon. That was a flight you two guys will remember for a long time. Glad you got some great video too. When you get to 70 like me you'll look back on it with "WOW! We really did that!" Or maybe "Damn, we're we really that crazy!" I've watched it twice. Going back for my 3rd. helping now. Thank you! Oh! I fly an old Trike too. Type in "Ultralight Politics" on KZbin. I tow a 10 x 16 foot American flag with.....you'll see!

Bill Callahan that’s great story. I’m an immigrant from Japan. My wife and two daughters moved US in 1987. My girls were 1 and 2 years old. Now, one became a doctor and the other became a mother.
@billcallahan93036 жыл бұрын
Henry TrikeLife ....Okay, so you must not be the guy who did the talking at the beginning. Looks like your Doctor bill worries are over too! Time to collect! You guys be safe. Great video. Nice to see some Americans not afraid to stick their necks out. Some guy, years back, was going to fly around the world on his Trike including an Atlantic crossing. I know he made it at least part way across the north Atlantic but I lost track after that. (?). Got more nerve than me. I know that 22 miles seemed like 22,000 at times too! Same for my 4 miles. I kept saying "Okay, just run for 5 more minutes & I can glide in!" You guys didn't even have a beach from the looks of it.
