As I scrolled through the comments I realized It always amazes me how a percentage of the population feels a need to be negative. This article is ""22 to Things to Do in Portland, OR" and as a native Oregonian, I agree with the writer. I've done about 98%, (I've missed some of the food/beverage suggestions.) Nowhere does he suggest moving to Portland or tell you how livable the city is. Portland, like any major city has it's social issues, such as the homeless and traffic, but that is not what the article is about. So enjoy his suggestions and add positive ideas of places to explore you feel he missed, like The Shanghai Tunnels and or The Victorian Mansion. An additional note, while Voodoo Donuts is not my favorite place for donuts, it is unique and features one of a kind donuts. That is worth exploring for nothing else than to check the place out and to say you've been there, i.e. worth exploring.

I live only a few miles away from old highway 30 and i take my motorcycle out a few times a week just to ride that road and it blows me away every time. Also just an hour out of portland is the Mt. To all the Portland haters down below. I've lived here for the better part of 6 decades. My family started a ranch out here before it was a state. I have traveled all over this world and lived in many different cities. IMHO Portland is the best. My favorite city. Portland Rocks! If you don't like it, don't come here. And Portland has always been like this. Portland and Oregon in general has always been a little weird, a little socialist, and followed its own path. Mayor Bud Clark? He is most famous for flashing a statue downtown, owning a tavern, and riding his bike to work at city hall way back in the 80s. Governor Tom McCall? He's a Republican and took away all the private beaches in the state and made them public. He also increased beer and soda by 10% with the nations first refundable deposit, started an environmental non profit, passed our urban growth boundary, and threw a hippy festival so we wouldn't protest a visit by Nixon. He was a Republican I could respect, even admire. Modern Republicans would call him a socialist and a commie. But he was just a true blue Oregonian who could see the big picture and did what was best for this state.
@beentheredonethatoriginals56736 жыл бұрын
Nope. The I5 corridor has always been as you describe and the rest of the state is actually pretty normal. Portland is a crappy city. I worked downtown for years and had to find the best route to the courthouse to miss the vomit and feces and meth addicts. I worked in a few law firms and saw the same garbage year after year. So glad none of my family lives there anymore.

@@beentheredonethatoriginals5673 I worked downtown for more than 30 years. It is not as you describe. Perhaps you just worked for crappy firms. I was never once accosted or had any problems whether it was 10am on NW 23rd, 6pm playing pool at the Nighthawk, Leaving Satyricon at 2am, or 4am eating late night pancakes at the Hotcake house. I lived out near Bend and in towns as small as Riddle as well. There are just as many if not more methheads in Bend and Clackamas per capita as Portland. They are just hidden. In fact the only time I ever had a problem in the whole state was in Sisters. Where I was the victim of a hit and run by a tweaker who later killed his wife and threw her in the river. I've lived in most sections of this state at some point of time from Pendleton to the Gold Beach and from the Couve to Cave Junction. Now I admit have only visited the great basin area a few times but It seems like any other farm area. Pleasant on the surface, but scratch the surface.... and poverty, alcoholism, and meth abound. It is just easier to see when population density is higher. The history of Oregon is littered with weirdness. I already gave you a fine example of actual Oregon Republicans. Do you really think Tom McCall is not popular in Eastern Oregon? Again my family has lived here since before it was a state. And I have lived here six decades. I have studied the actual history of the state. And the state has always been a little weird and socialist. Sorry you didn't enjoy it. I hope leaving makes you feel better. Don't let the door hit ya where the good lord....

@@bnorberg988 I worked on the 19th floor overlooking pioneer square and the Willamette. It was upscale on 2nd. I also worked at an older building just a stones throw from the historic courthouse, it was not upscale but not rundown, it was simply old and not updated. It was above a Rite Aid, where you could simply never get in and out of the building without a number of panhandlers wanting money. I even had one panhandler get mad at me for handing a different guy some money. This was DAILY. Every time you left or entered the building. I've had drunks fall on me on the MAX, 20 year olds with vomit crusted sleeping bags brush against me on the bus, and as I said previously every morning before the store owners cleaned the area around their establishments there would be vomit, the heavy smell of urine, and feces (usually from dogs but not always) on the way to the courthouse. I love Bend but haven't been in years, I'm sure some things have changed, but I always recall the overly leftist populous of the larger cities along the I5 corridor, as is symptomatic with many, many larger west coast cities .

@@beentheredonethatoriginals5673 I am sorry for you experiences. I worked on 9th and Alder, 4th and Everett, & 4th and Alder. Amongst others. Many times leaving very late at night. I also commuted by bicycle for most of my life. And perhaps I was simply fortunate, but I never had a hard time. Perhaps it is because I grew up there and know those streets like the back of my hand. I sincerely hope that you find a city that meets your standards of creativity and prosperity.
@bnorberg9886 жыл бұрын
@@beentheredonethatoriginals5673 I am not trying to be rude. But, perhaps you should ask yourself why there are so many homeless in the first place. When I was a child in the 60s and 70s homelessness had nearly been eliminated. That was before Reagan closed the nations mental health facilities and emptied them out on to the streets. www.povertyinsights.org/2013/10/14/did-reagans-crazy-mental-health-policies-cause-todays-homelessness/ By the end of the 80's homelessness had skyrocketed. Especially the homelessness of crazy people. The solution to homelessness? Provide people with a home and mental health treatment for the mentally ill. Where can you find such a success story? Utah. www.npr.org/2015/12/10/459100751/utah-reduced-chronic-homelessness-by-91-percent-heres-how The fact is society is going to pay the price for mental illness and homelessness. We can either pay by stepping over them or pay to help them. The same goes for Nixon/Reagan/Clinton's failed war on drugs.

Seattle is amazing but in a different way from Portland. It has a lot more money, some epic scenery (harbor, Mt Rainier), a great university, and a downtown with some terrific architectural gems. Portland is much easier to navigate, much more laid back, and probably a lot more fun. Also, there's a huge sex/kink scene in Portland. Both cities are great for cannabis.

I'm so old I remember when Saturday Market used to be the hippest thing to do in Portland. There are still great places and great things to do but there's also too much traffic, junkies and crime now. Guess that's to be expected given it's meteoric growth and influx of people from mostly Cali. If you can afford it and are lucky enough to secure tickets try and catch a Timbers MLS match at Providence Park, built in 1926 and gone through extensive renovation it's as close to an old school English football stadium that you'll find in the US. Now if they would just ditch that field turf and install a hybrid pitch like a real and proper English stadium I could die a happy man. We used to go up to the Witch's Castle all the time as teenagers and smoke weed while keeping an eye out for narcs. Now we just sit at home and smoke weed with our neighbors who are cops, ahh the benefits of legal recreational Mary-e-wanna.

Spot on! Also a Portland native and I remember when Hawthorne started to become super trendy and I was so happy since I lived in the neighborhood. Hawthorne and Saturday market were the place to go for hippy trinkets and wondering around. It's a shame everything has gotten so crowded and expensive, but it's still a super dope city.

Are you old enough to remember the shallow concrete pool that we could wade in? How about the downtown Morrow's Nut House, pre Lloyd Center? Best cashews ever! Speaking of L.C. how about skating on real ice and watching the Zamboni smooth it out while waiting to be among the first on the fresh ice?

The thing I've noticed in Portland is a lack of public garbage cans (atleast on eastside). If you have some trash, you better be prepared to schlep it around with you until you get home.
