Tim is in my eyes the best bass singer there is at the moment. His vocal range is not human. He can also hold the super low notes perfectly for a very long time - this guy must have the lungs of an elephant 😁 Love your reaction, thanks!

I am a die hard Home Free fan, but Tim and his talent hold a special place in my heart. He can sing clearly and beautifully and then sink down to the basement without a glitch. It blows my mind. These Gentlemen are seriously the best of the best. I would highly suggest "Brothers In Arms" for Tim's latest Bass masterpiece. If you want some Bass fun try Hillbilly Bone. I'm tight there with ya. It just never gets old. Thanks for loving our guys and welcome to the Home Fries.

It doesn't sound so distorted in the concert, the mobiles they're recording with just can't handle the sound. But yeah, that man will vibrate your soul. He goes almost as high as he does low in "greensleeves" with Peter Hollens. Best wishes to Rob, hope he get's well soon.

I love watching this compilation of Tim's lowest dragon's breath notes. He is my favorite bass singer out there, with an incredible range. He takes the lead in a few songs such as "In The Blood", "Hillbilly Bone", "Friends In Low Places", "Brothers In Arms" & "Misty Mountains" (a collaboration with Peter Hollens).

Tim Foust is like the bass equivalent of a dog whistle. It's hard for a bass to sustain really low notes - it takes a lot of breath control and diaphragm control. It's even harder for a bass to stay ON KEY on those really low notes, especially if it's a long-held note.

@@johndeeregreen4592 Musically it is still called the Vocal Fry. I studied professionally for twenty plus years. Yes, there are degrees, but as I said, the range is still called The Vocal Fry. You go from Fry up to Head Voice with all the ranges in between.

@@LadyDragonsblood, you are absolutely wrong. I have a master's of music, am a professional vocal coach and have taught for over 30 years. No, vocal fry doesn't occur based on range and note; it occurs based on technique. You can have a clean note even at C1 (J.D. Sumner being one example who could sing that low without vocal fry).

In Season 4 of The Sing Off, the judges were Ben Folds (Ben Folds Five), Jewel, and Shawn Stockman (Boys II Men), with host Nick Lachey (98 Degrees). In the live shows, you hear all the voices (saw my first show this past October), but when Tim hits the low notes, you feel it in your whole body, my chest literally vibrated. That alone was well worth the price of admission! Thanks for reacting, you have SO MUCH more to enjoy!

Assuming you mean “bottom of the scale,” then no. The notes are C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C. C4 is “middle C” on a piano. It’s where most piano pieces start/are centered around (google images may help in visualizing this). The next C down is C3, then C2, C1, and finally C0. So he’s not quite off the keyboard, but he’s coming pretty darned close, given that he’s on the higher end of the second octave from the left. 😃 Most people have a 3-octave range; the dragon here gets up to high- tenor range, so he’s already working with a 5-octave range. 😁

I'm a bit late but when Tim goes low to the point it sounds like a vibration it's called the growl technique which he popularized as far as I know (growling and controlling the pitch on demand). And he's the master at it; both Geoff of voiceplay and Avi of PTX learned the growl from tim. I've tried it's extremely hard to do. I find subharmonics easier which I can actually do, Tim is a monster.

Yay, more Home Free! Tim has the craziest range. In concert you feel his voice as well as hear it. And then he tops it with a beautiful tenor when you least expect it. Misty Mountains with Peter Hollens and Tim Foust is another great one to react to, but recommending End of the Road for now. That clip is from The Sing Off season 4 and is my personal favorite version of the Ring of Fire.

So for reference, C4 is middle C on a standard 88 key piano. So when Tim hits that E1, he is 2 and a half octaves below middle C. The E1 is the 5th white key from the left. :)
@chrisd7047
@chrisd7047 2 жыл бұрын
Also for reference: Middle A, which is used for tuning in most circumstances (like if you hear an orchestra tuning), is 440Hz. The bottom note on a piano is an A0, which is 27.5Hz. Humans can hear down to about 20Hz, which would be an E-1, maybe a D#-1. Some whales can hear down to 7Hz under water. Elephants can hear down to 5 or 6Hz. Earthquakes typically produce frequencies between 0.1Hz and 10Hz.

Most of these extremely low notes use the technique referred to as the vocal growl. It's not "normal" chest singing or even vocal fry. One way to explain it is if you clear your throat, there's a period where your throat produces a low vibration. It's that extended and controlled over a much longer period of time. It's very airy as you indicated, and low volume, so doesn't sound good on it's own, needs a mic and equalizing the air (at higher frequencies) out of the sound. Tim has mastered the growl better than just about anyone. Regarding your question about G1, it's a specific note of frequency 49.0 Hz. Most men can't get any lower than the 2nd octave, but G1 is in the first octave, an octave below G2 which is already low for most men. For comparison, A0 is the lowest key on a piano, so he's within the lowest octave on the piano (A0-A1)

Hey SAUCEYDAD I truly enjoy your channel. I found your channel because of Home Free. And then because you started reacting to them a lot and I love them I stayed.

you need to check out Geoff Castellucci from Voice Play for another sub-harmonic bass. Try Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold. There is Tim Foust from Home Free with Peter Hollins for one version and Geoff Castellucci does a multi layer of himself doing all 4 parts for another. They are both absolutely brilliant and I think it might be good for you to react to both of them so you can compare. If you like Home Free you will also like Voice Play which is the a capella group Geoff is part of.

Just an FYI, Saucy, Geoff and Tim mostly use different techniques to get to those low notes. Tim mostly uses fry (or growl) while Geoff mostly uses subharmonics. (They both know the other's technique, just don't use it.) It's amazing how different the same note can sound. VoicePlay and Home Free are great examples of how similar and yet how different a cappella groups can be. Someone once said if the a cappella world were a high school, Pentatonix would be the student council, VoicePlay would be the musical theater geeks, and Home Free would be the rowdy boys throwing a kegger on game nights (I'd add "and then acting like angels on Sunday morning at church," 'cause they can sure bring it with the hymns).

As a sound engineer and fry having followed and seen these guys live, you definitely do want to experience. The amount of goose flesh when he hits these notes. Phone's and video's can never capture it adequately. As a side note, Tim has sent subs into protect mode after your indicating you saw a tear from the subs. Funny as hell. Amps went into protect from the clip, didn't actually destroy the 18's. Here's the link kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2a2mJmspLWirsU

I found out Tim does not claim the low note in the song "Sold" as they are unable to tell if it's him or Adam Rupp's throat singing or a combination of both. Which makes me wonder exactly what kind of range Adam has? I know he is a tenor between Austin and Rob when singing in his comfortable range but with what he does, he would have to have a crazy range. Btw, I recently saw a bass battle video and according to that Tim has hit G0...not sure if it is accurate though. So on a traditional piano keyboard, he is beyond the end if he truly hit that note.

Tim recently said, he hasn't found his lowest note yet....he keeps working and training...so no telling how low he can go....and YES, he has hit G0 more than once.

The song you mentioned that you wanted to hear is "My Church." I just saw them in concert on Feb 17 and let me assure you - they are as good in person as any studio recording. They usually let Adam (the beatboxer) have a solo. He had one in the concert I saw and got a standing ovation!

Tim has blown sound systems in live shows. The other acapella group bass singers can low, but Tim can hold it a long time. Tim has gone lower then the lowest note on a piano which I believe is A0. The notes get lower the closer you get to A.

These are a very talented group of guys. Austin and Rob are classically trained. There is a video. Adam Rupp is two time beat box champion. Tim actually went lower than the bass is Oak Ridge Boys singing Elvira.

The 1's, 2's etc. Thru 8 are mapping out the keyboard. C1 Is the lowest C on the keyboard, G4 being the lowest G on the keyboard. A0 and B0 being the bottom end. I've seen on a couple of the bassoffs, where Tim has gone into the 0's. I've keyed him in where there are no more keys. Amazing!
