Oddly, I wasn't much of a Queen fan until my *children* became Queen fans in their early teens - I'm not sure, but I think it began with a zombie movie or something? I have watched this quite a few times. But it never comes close to that first time when it really was live. We were partying and good god, Freddie came on and he had us in the palm of his hand, just like we were there. The energy, the rush. The only thing that came close was when Elvis played live for the world. Elvis playing live globally was akin to the moon landing. But Freddie was like a rocket to mars.

That guitar is called The Red Special and is unique and as such priceless. It was made by Brian and his dad Harold when Brian was a teen out of odds and ends. An old mantlepiece, a tabletop, his mother's knitting needle etc. There are videos of Brian talking about, he even shows the woodworm holes he filled in with matchsticks.

Nobody would know the particulars about his medical condition or the doctor's advice because it is nobody's business. I'm sure over the years and decades of touring he had issues with his voice that he had to over come. People want to ramp up the emotional value to pretend Freddie did something heroic and death defying. In reality a 20 minute 6 song performance would be nothing for him given the hundreds of concerts where he had to sing 25 or more songs.

Raised 140 million pounds for the feminine in Ethiopia and watched by 1.5 billion people from 150 countries around the world. Sir Brian May is the guitarist of Queen he is also an astrophysicist check out his unique guitar the ( red special) made by he and his dad when he was a kid as he could not afford a Fender or a Gibson at the time. I was privileged to see them the same year in Melbourne Australia in April, before this concert. It was the most amazing musical experience of my life and I’ve seen a lot of huge bands. Freddie was the ultimate showman, he acknowledged every section of the crowd. We were like this audience, singing everything along with him. He was just incredible and thousands of others and myself floated out of that show with our ears ringing from the volume and high on what we had just seen!!! I wish I could go back and do it all again!!

Freddie Mercury said some time later that he was only at about 70% strength because of his health. He took 3-4 shots of vodka and went out on the stage. Queen wasn't originally scheduled to play that day; they were added after the event tickets had already been sold. They also didn't want to perform like every other artist or band. Others were only interested in promoting their latest hits or albums. Queen decided to do things a bit differently, which is why they played a lot of older (more familiar) stuff of theirs, except Hammer To Fall. It also explains the simplicity of the stage setup, the lights, and even the way they dressed. They didn't want the performance to be about being flamboyant; they wanted it to be all about the music. The next act to go on stage, after Queen, was the legendary David Bowie. It's noted that as he passed by Queen on his way to the stage, he was upset at how well they had been received by the crowd, and he reportedly said "How the f**k am I supposed to follow that?!?!" Queen had just owned the crowd (over 100,000 standing room only) for over 21 minutes, and in doing so, they set the standard for how a music performance was supposed to be done, and all the other acts had to scramble to try to match their intensity.

i grew up with Queen music, I remember when I was a teenager I did not have a room on my own my brother sometimes allowed me to be in his room when he was out for an evening and we had an old record player, I was listening to some queen music ( probably an greatest hits album) with the hits from the 70s to the early 80s. You know every song is different. they all wrote songs.They had controvers songs like fat bottommend girls, or bycicle race ( a music video you could probably not do today).I think they made more than 15 albums over the years. There is a good documentary called These are the days of our lives, if you want to know more about their history. Freddie, born as Farag Bulsara died in 91 of aids. These are the days of our lives was also the last music video of them together, and it seems like he is saying good bye in a very sweet and loving way to his fans. it is nice seeing that young people today still appreciate this good music

Fun fact -- back in 1985, Queen were almost has-beens. This concert not only revived their career, it sent them into the stratosphere. Absolutely phenomenal performance from the best front man of a band ever, LiveAid 1985 a charity concert to raise funds for a terrible famine in Ethiopia, the live concert was twinned with a concert in Philadelphia USA , 72,000 crowd at Wembley Stadium UK, and 92,000 in the crowd Philadelphia USA , all the best artist in the world performing at the concerts , each artist had around 22 minutes to perform, Queen came on stage and with their phenomenal flamboyant performance stole the show from any other performer,they were by far the best on the day, although Freddie was advised not to perform by his doctor due to a throat infection, Freddie was determined to perform, and the rest is history, Queen as a band always gelling perfectly they were all amazing musicians, and each member of the band have written No1 hits,I was so fortunate to be able to attend the LiveAid concert and have seen Queens live concerts on several occasions throughout their career, I also attended Freddie’s last live performance concert ever at Knebworth Park United Kingdom, the crowd was around 140 thousand or more, A Phenomenal British band with a huge catalog of amazing songs, great reaction thanks!

My youngest son is your age. I don’t pay much attention to what he listens to most of the time. Freddie was the first to admit that he was not a dancer but he certainly puts out some attitude with his movements across the stage. This is the old Wembley Stadium in London, England and the crowd on that day was 72,000 though I have heard 80,000 as well because supposedly 72,000 is for people seated on the field not standing but for the sake of argument I would just go with 72,000 which was capacity for the stadium. Set list: Bohemian Rhapsody, Radio Ga-Ga, Ay-OH (call and response), Hammer To Fall, Crazy Little Thing Called Love (Brian plays three different guitars in this song), We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions. So far, this looks like the copy of this concert that cuts off at the end which really breaks the rhythm of the show but if nobody told you which copy to select, you would have no way of knowing ahead. I hope that this is not the one that cuts off but if so, know that we (Queen Army) all understand it is not your fault. Brian May is the guitarist. He built that guitar (The Red Special) with his dad when he was a teen and still uses it almost exclusively and always on stage. He was also Knighted by King Charles and holds a PhD in Astrophysics so he is no Dr. Sir Brian Harold May, PhD, CBE. (and a few other letters after his name. John Deacon is the Bass Player and he built a special amplifier out of junk he found in a dumpster. That amp known as the Deacy Amp (pronounced (dee-key amp) when used with Brian's guitar, it enables him to create the sounds of horns and strings with his guitar. For 50 years people have been trying to duplicate that amp and so far, nobody has, though somebody is now very close according to Brian. John has an advanced Degree in Electronics. Roger Taylor is the drummer. He has a degree in Biology and ended up leaving Dental School when Queen started touring. Freddie has a degree in Design, Fashion and Advertising. This is no garage band, each of these guys are brilliant, Brainiacs all of them. What was coming up at the end was Queen's contribution to the encore of the whole concert. Brian came out with an acoustic guitar and he and Freddie performed a song that they wrote together called Is This The World We Created. Though they wrote it for an album the song fit right in with the theme of this concert which was Aid for the starving people in Africa.

Live Aid was set as two simultaneous performances, one for an audience of 72,000 people at Wembley Stadium in London and 89,000 people at John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia. It was broadcast in over 100 different countries. An estimated 1.9 billion people were said to have watched Live Aid in 1985. It went down as the largest televised live concert in history, and Queen stole the show. If only Freddie were still here today....arguably the greatest frontman of all time! It raised over £114m ($140m) for famine relief, brought the world's attention to Ethiopia's devastating food shortages and undoubtedly saved thousands from death. A truly historical event! One great thing about Queen was if you saw them in concert they sounded like they do on the albums. I saw them twice they were the best concerts I ever saw (and I saw a lot). The guitarist Brian May built his own guitar to get the sound he wanted and has a PhD in Astrophysics. This is Live Aid, a huge concert with many performers but Queen was by far the best. It is at Wembley Stadium in England.

He doesn’t do anything but awesome. He strut and flamboyant act is one of the best I’ve ever seen. His voice and musicality is beyond anyone I’ve have before or since. I love many artist from my era 60’s and 70’s some 80’s. In my opinion no one out performs Freddy. I love your reaction to Queen for their part in Live Aid. Keep bringing old and new music back. Queen stole the show! Nobody wanted to go after them! There were 72,000 in attendance and 1.9 billion people worldwide watching this in the biggest satellite link-up in history to that point in time. Interesting fact a lot of people don't know is that Freddie's doctor told him NOT to perform that day as he risked injuring his already strained vocal chords to the point of never being the same again. Freddie, ever the professional, ever the performer, wouldn't think of letting the crowd down. So that is Freddie singing on an extremely bad day! This is known as the "20 minutes that changed music forever"! Enjoy your journey into Queen world! And yes, Freddie does not dance, he struts and poses! If you haven't already reacted to "Somebody to Love", Live 1981 Montreal I highly recommend "giving it a go" as they say in England! Enjoy and appreciate what your senses are telling you, remembering that everything is the way it was done that day, not later auto-tuned and pitch-corrected, those technologies did not exist then and I think all us music lovers wish it had NEVER been invented!

As said before, this was a world wide concert, performed, in the UK the US and Australia, as one finished another started, it went for 16 to 18 hours i believe in total, , Freddie was advised not to sing as he had throat issues, he was singing around 75%, Also another little kow fact, phil colins also sang in the Air Tonight in the UK, jumped on a plane and made it to the US, to sing in the US part of the concert Freddie was the greatest showman

At 9:48, Freddie and Brian sang a special song"Is This the World We Created ". There is a good live performance of that from Wembley 1986. The video from Live Aid is usually blocked.
