Zener diodes are the most basic voltage regulators you can find. They are fairly good at decreasing the ripple voltage presented to the load. You only need a current limiting resistor and the diode itself to set one up. This simplicity comes at the cost of limited current handling and a large loss in power dropped on the diode itself and the current limiter.
Avalanche and Zener diodes are discussed and tested in this video along with the calculations needed to select the current limiter. The temperature coefficients of Zener and avalanche current diodes are also covered.
