There actually is no minimum weight in the rules, just the 16 pound max. You could throw a 1 pound ball if you wanted to, and such a thing existed and got approved

5:35 Several years back I went and played duckpin for the first time. The light ball felt so weird my feet got all messed up and I even threw wrong footed on accident. Two days later at league it was a real challenge. Everything felt off with my 16lb balls until the middle of the second game.

I think the problem with it not hooking is because it rolling over the holes it had pre drilled.

Scientifically speaking. It takes the ball about 4 seconds to hit the pins meaning you are throwing it around 10 mph. You are also getting about 10-15 revs on the ball meaning your hitting the pocket with about 51 Newtons of force as opposed to a 15 lb ball that would generate 154 Newtons of force. So the light ball literally has 1/3 of the energy hitting the pocket. You can't go flush because the ball doesn't contain enough kinetic energy to carry to the back row. It takes at least 5-10 Newtons of force to knock down a pin. With this said most of your energy is absorbed by the head pin with logarithmic declination from there. So you can really do 1 of 3 things. Add a ton of speed to the ball (about 30 mph), add a ton of side momentum (basically 30-40 revs) both are hard to do. The other option is to go high to Brooklyn and try and keep the pins on the deck longer so they can cascade. Interesting physics problem..... I should probably go do my homework lol...
@thomasleonard9685Ай бұрын
Gotta point off the ditch to think about carrying with the light ball. We used to bowl pot games with 6’s. That was the move
@doctorrobert60Ай бұрын
The 2-10 and 4-9-10 conversions were epic! Only benefit of the 5 lb. ball was deflection. Weird way the ball goes through the pins leave some strange leaves. Michael you are a good sport doing this to entertain us!

You definitely need to look into getting a bunch of bowling KZbinrs together sometime to do sime competitive challeges with the 4 and 5 pound balls. Some sort of splits challenge, a race to a certain number of strikes, an elimination game, and maybe one or more Baker Format games.
@DoomSlayer3493Ай бұрын

"Just as good as the Pro Shop would do it." 😂 You were throwing it way too fast. You gotta roll it slow right up the middle and let it touch the headpin on either side and then the magic will occur. We have a lady in league that uses an 8 lb house ball and gets amazing carry slow up the middle. Ball often takes out the 7 or 10 depending on which side of the headpin it hits. And yes, the slow motion effect is what creates the carry.

If I were you, practice with a light ball like that. Your swing and release are so clean. Keep uping the weight gradually and you will be able to do that with the 15 pounder
@nightwolf312Ай бұрын
Two things I noticed about this video: 1. The strategy of trying to hit the pocket with a light ball like that might not be the best way to go. You got better reactions with the Brooklyn shots as well as the first ball in the third game which was a deep, high hit that struck. 2. Might not be a bad idea to have a light ball just for certain situations. The way you picked up those splits by deflecting the ball looked like a better way to go at those kinds of splits rather than trying to pick it up like normal. Just saying.
