WOW! You've convinced me. I've been watching you and your vids for months now. You've inspired me to get certified in sailing requirements and its almost complete. I'm in my mid 60s, and in good health, so screw it all, I'm selling the house, cashing in the 401K, and I'm gon'a buy a 40+ft sail boat and set sail for a world adventure. Thanks for the inspiration.

This has been a good series on Ryan's solo. Perspective is so important. I'm a former CFII and cop. I'll give you a few thoughts on dealing with things: The next time you guys are in the middle of the ocean thinking a few weeks is forever, consider that the first people that will travel to Mars will be on a six month one way trip in a tin can in the vacuum of Space. That makes three weeks in an ocean full of fish and natural oxygen seem like nothing. When you encounter bad things, but have to operate and focus, throw those mental bits of baggage in a box, tape up every corner and throw it in the back of your mind and function on your tasks & make new ones. When it's over there will be plenty of time to unpack it, if you choose to do so. And finally, there are two ways to deal with things: Emotionally or rationally. When you operate on emotions, tempers flare and passion reigns and that's usually when bad things can happen. When you take the rational path, decision making improves. Cheers!

Well done and congratulations on an amazing achievement, Ryan. That shaky start would have put many off but you overcame your fears and doubts, and persevered. A great solo trip indeed.

Just what I was about to say! An experience like this is an excellent opportunity to really discover one's innermost being, say centre, like no other. Moreover, solitude is an essential prerequisite, company is only a distraction running interference. I would expect that for Ryan the experience held its moments of pure terror to be offset by others of pure elation. Whatever Ryan, the important thing is that YOU DID IT! Well done!!
@Tim8mit2 жыл бұрын
GOBSMACKED.....I might be wrong but it is an old expression from England meaning to be in awe, gob is a slang word for mouth, eg shut your gob, or as children in England we would get gob stoppers which were large candy balls that just barely fit in your mouth. As for God smacked yes there is a band, and explanation is that it is another term for Karma / of instant Karma. Ryan I'm impressed in just hope you managed your anxiety especially after the refugee boat beginning and how comfortable you became with just you and the sea, to me as a viewer it appears you enjoy your own company. Good all around

Birds are often thirsty - no fresh water out at sea, if you can put some fresh water out for them they love it. Well done making it. Incidentally wrt your "last 20 feet" imagine how astronomers feel - light spends sometimes thousands of years coming through space to them, gets messed up in the last fraction of a second by the atmosphere :-)!

Congrats on your crossing. If no one mentioned a good idea for your canvas stitching use a PTF thread which is pretty much life time thread. We use Solarfix on every thing we build, but there’s also Tenara Both are PTF. I would restitch all your canvas before your next venture.
