Connect a battery and then read the voltage: depending on how your meter handles ripply DC, you might be getting a false reading. The output of a rectifier rarely looks quite right without at least a capacitor over it to smooth it out.

Thanks for the comment, I.I'll give it a go on a battery and have a look how it behaves.

Awesome tear down of that old rectifier I always wondered about the mechanical construction of those things ! yeah build another bridge out of 4 Schottky's just to find out if it can be saved !...Merry Christmas (again !) Squeak!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Was good seeing how it went together, it looks like it won't be going in the bin just yet. Merry squeakmas

I have one of these I am about to fully refurbish, for use. Selenium is not very efficient, so I will be using a Silicon full bridge plus some smoothing..

I hope you yours has not lost as many volts as mine. Was thinking I have some large gauge enamel copper wire, maybe i could add a few more turns on the secondary.

bin is definately the place for that charger buy yourself an CTEK MSX 5 charger and fix either the battery or what's causing the current draw

Well, the problem with modern chargers is they don't work well then the batteries are very flat and I don't have one. I think the disco being full of water is a hint to my problems. But I've got to do something as I now have two cars off the road. The next video has something to do with part of the current flow.

@@TheEmbeddedHobbyist don't be a cheap skate buy the CTEK they have recovered batteries for me from between 8-10 volts I used to run my S-Type on it's original battery for 15 years

@@fredflintstone1 I would but I've a sick Volvo. if the clutch slave cylinder as gone, then the gearbox has to come out. Who the hell thought that inside the gearbox was a good place to put it. 😞

hmm, it always annoys me when people use pliers in stead of the correct spanner or adjustable to undo nuts and bolts

I had no intension of it going back together. So pliers were to hand, I'd have to have gone and found a small adjustable nut F***er and being an old fart i took the easy route. Thanks for being number 1 in the comments Fred.

@@TheEmbeddedHobbyist I didn't want to be number one, but I figured I would be the only person commenting, as for the rest you should know where your spanners are when you need to adjust your nuts 🙂

Interesting video! Selenium in low concentration is actually required for the human body to function, higher concentrations can be toxic, but the real danger is when a selenium rectifier fails. The most common failure mode is overheating caused by increasing resistance of the junction (literally "burning out"). This releases hydrogen selenide, very toxic and potentially lethal if inhaled - smells bad too. Regards, David
