FIRST RULE - Spend the money to drill below the frost line for year-round near free geo-heat. SECOND RULE - Insulate well, i.e. R60 THIRD RULE - Install a geo heat pump system. FOURTH RULE - Incorporate passive solar if possible. Over the building life the real costs are operation - pay now with best of 1-2-3-4 construction or pay five times over the building lifetime with low-cost cutting corner constructions. Just do the math... it doesn't lie.

Air sealing, super insulation, triple pane windows, solar energy, battery storage and an electric vehicle charger. Geothermal is an interesting option. Air sealing and insulation are usually very cost effective.
