Thanks Robert, the information is priceless to know, and so is your site. I have been following for years and I seriously don’t think you realise how motivating what you impart in every episode is - if you are interested in the topic, investigate, experiment, be stimulated to do something about it and enjoy! No other site achieves this broad spectrum of interests in such a great way. Most appreciated!

@@Nobe_Oddy inform yourself about the yt community rules. I also experienced some of this when I used to mistakenly included web links. Once I followed the rules then I only get deleted by other users and not automatically by yt as in the past. Good luck.

@@Nobe_OddyI don't think he is deleting them... YT doesn't allow links in the comments so it auto-deletes them (at least in my experience) Odd thing tho, before I saw this post, I also posted same info.

Was curious about this as well, but it won't work for his application. Pretty sure SEM has too low resolution for looking at graphene

Years ago, Scientific American ran a column called "The Amateur Scientist." It was great and you can get CDs with all the columns. But as you can imagine, the projects are a bit outdated. Hardware X sounds like a modern version, writ large. It looked wonderful.

Scientific American used to be one of my favorite magazines. It was technical, on the edge of being too technical for many, but filled with such variety. Sadly, it changed and is now all about climate change and a bit dumbed down. Would love a replacement like the old one was

@@TheSorters They went WAY political toward the end of the Vietnam War. They never recovered. At one point they tried to hire a person to revive the Amateur Scientist column, and the guy they found would have been fantastic by all accounts. But they found out he was a practicing Christian and a political conservative, so they scrapped the project. But their old stuff was top-notch. And if you like recreational mathematics, Martin Gardner's Mathematical Games column was GREAT!

A long time ago, I found something called precious plastic and I was very enamored of it and I still like it, though it goes by different name today. Basically, they took recycled plastics and made essentially boards and other materials in place of wood to reduce costs. They had a big Grinder to chop up all the plastic into bits and they would melt it on a bigger level/push it through a corkscrew into a mold for whatever shape they wanted.

Hi, Rob. I want to thank you so much for all your curiosity, and your willingness to share it. I've just finished my first proper machine that I've made from bits and bobs; a Wimshurst machine, and it works! The buzz has been worth the time and effort many times over. It's one thing to build something from existing plans, but I found using existing bits and having to decide on every measurement both difficult and extremely satisfying in itself. I wouldn't have had the guts to try such a thing without seeing your stuff, to be honest. I have to say, also, that the first spark, over an inch long, made me jump out of my skin! It's a proper CRACK! Anyway, thanks again, and more to your elbow, mate!

Currently making my own metallurgical microscope following the design for the OpenFlexure microscope. It's not HardwareX, but the fact that I can now buy surplus parts and print my own fixtures means I can make the microscope for nearly a tenth of the cost of a new one.

I remember those old scanning tunneling microscope plans you're talking about, I doubt downloaded a copy unfortunately, if I did it's on an old toray phase change optical 640mb PD disk (Phillips technology precursor to the DVD RAM) From the same era , I have an old parallel port printer and a Windows 3.1 for workgroups computer that I planned to turn into a syringe 3D printer but never finished.

There was a short musing about how we all used to have home printers then opining that we dont all have them anymore, so what did we print? We we didnt have phones, social media, or terabyte hard drives, so when we found something we printed it because thats how we shared things with our friends and stored them for later. Now I just have thousands of bookmarks on our browsers.

Another possible avenue to explore, with regards to positively identifying graphene and assessing its topology, is Raman Spectroscopy. For example, there is a spectrum for graphene, and the presence of an extra little peak on the end of that spectrum can tell you whether the graphene is turbostratic (love that word - it means all-over-the-shop) or in lumps. It's well worth looking into, and apparently it's possible - especially for someone with your skills - to DIY the hardware required. There are many other uses for one, obviously, but it seemed to me like an easier route to the same goal you have in mind. I found a couple of UK-based analytic labs that will do STM or Raman spectroscopy on samples but haven't had quotes. I'm expecting the cost to be in the multiple hundreds per sample but that's just a poorly educated guess. Do you have a better handle on the going rate?
