Trying to load a cheaper clone of MK 262 with the 75gr Hornady BTHP /w Cannelure in .223 Remington and 5.56x45mm. The first test powders are VihtaVuori N540 and Alliant Power-Pro Varmint.

@johnny'sreloadingbench Audio sounds great to me. Also, I have shot the 75s and 77s out of my WOA 1/7 barrel. I could not get the 75s to behave. They would group two or three together at most four with a flyer. The sierra 77s were consistent. I settled on LC brass, fed 205m, 23.6 grains of 8208xbr and sierra 77. I can shoot ten shots into about an inch.

Picked up some of the Hornady 75 gr. BTHPs the other day after getting tired of paying the price for the 77 gr. SMKs, then I saw this video. Sierras are good projectiles but, if your barrel likes the Hornady, it's going to have similar terminal performance at a far more reasonable price. Unfortunately the HK93 has a 1-12” twist and didn’t stabilize the 75 grain bullet. However I recently found a 1-7” barrel for the rifle and look forward to shooting both weight bullets. I’ve had very similar results with the 75gr bthp and varmint. I did see lower ES and SD than you’re seeing using the CCI 41 primers. At 24.5gr PPV, LC Brass, CCI 41 primers through a 24” AR stoner bull barrel I saw: 2879 FPS 25 ES 9 SD So lower ES and SD is possible. Glad to see I’m not the only one struggling with these bullets and power pro varmint. Even the Tom Brady of reloading (JRB) has issues from time to time 😅. Thanks for the quality content!

Somewhere I read that the SMK has a tangent ogive while the Hornady OTM has a secant ogive. Secant has a better ballistic coefficient typically but is also more sensitive to variation in seating depth. Seems to make sense as you see most people can get the SMKs to perform well but you see more complaints about the Hornady OTM not giving great performance in some guns.

@@HighPriestVaticanAssasin that makes sense to me, guess inconstancy bullet seated need to have a longer jump to the throat of the barrel. Guess they stabilize better. Reminds me of that one competition shooter who provided the jam test then back off 20 thou and play with the overall length. In a nut shell not chasing the lands makes the most sense with these type of bullets.

Super excited for these videos! Like everyone else, I have had inconsistent results with the Hornady. Refreshing to know it's not just me lol. I have tried weight sorting my bullets and found the runout to be pretty appalling compared to Sierra 77 SMKs. The base to ogive measurements are pretty consistent though. I have tried different charge weights, but have not yet tried different seating depths with them. I hope you are able to tame them so I can try to follow suit.

I shot mostly 77 gr SMKs but wanted a cheaper alternative so I bought a case of Hornady to try. I’ve shot several thousand of the 75 gr Hornady, and I feel like I’m always chasing my tail. Unexplained flyers are common. Varget was terrible for me. TAC did better but there would still be flyers. It wasn’t a process error, runout was always good. Back to the Sierras and the problems went away. I’ve since decided to pony up for Sierra or, when I can, buy cosmetic factory seconds up in Sedalia at the plant. I wish they would ship them, but they only take walk-ins and sell by the pound.

I have had issues with a bipod with rubber feet - especially on a hard surface - it can sometimes "hop" causing some vertical. Since I discovered that, I always use a sliding surface (such as a towel or something) on top of the hard surface and the vertical goes away. I especially see it with large calibers.

I have a bunch of the 75s like yourself hoping to get them to shoot because of price. So far I can say they are not as consistent as the Sierras. Not done trying things out though. I get weird group shifts and fliers more with the Hornadys (same 18" WOA barrel and recently upgraded from PSA upper/handguard to a Aero enhanced upper/hanguard, Larue MBT2S) I have read that these bullets actually don't really like mag length and do better somewhere between 2.23 and 2.24 (Hornady's Factory loadings are loaded shorter than mag length FWIW) I have had the best numbers with RL15 and will also be trying N140 and CFE223 soon but running low on Primers.

If you had good results with the CCI #41 primers, the first thing I'd do is go back to them, and see if the PP Varmint works better. I also seem to remember that you used Remington #7 1/2 primers to good result in that series, as well.

Looking at this shows what i found, there is a bit of inconsistency the weight of the 75gr hornady BTHP. I have thr hornady and some federal (gold dot)75gr also. fed are a bit more consistent in weight. I also have some of the old molly coated Hornady 75gr units also, I did however remove the greasy film from them and they shoot great with with Power Pro Varmint. The 77gr cost more for a reason a guess just more consistency in the production.

I have a similar setup and had issues with the mlok screw for the bipod pic rail hitting the gas block. Worth checking.

75 grain Hornadys work great in my 16”. The Sierras work really well in my 20” using carry handle irons. I haven’t worked in the 77s in the shorter barrel. The 75 grainers seem to shoot better around 2650 fps from my rifle. Max load was under an inch but a middle load was around 5/8”.

@@me2bfc I just checked hogdons site and they are out. MidSouth had some a while ago but the hazmat charge is stupid same with primers. It's dumb you can order primed cases without hazmat but need hazmat for just primers!! The man has to get his I reckon

@@TheDkb427 thanks. I meant I was out of the 75 grain bullets not the 7 1/2 primers. I messed up and worked that load up with bench rest primers, which is evidently what Bigfoot uses and has been using ALL of them cause I can’t find him or them.

@@NSghostoif5 I think it's inconsistencies with the bullets themselves I would get great groups going then 1 bullet would go 1-1.5" out of the group so I would have 4 in a .75" cluster and one out of every group would fly out for no rhyme or reason, the rifle was heavily sand bagged no movement minimum input from me at all. Never had issues like that with the 69 or 77 grain SMK or the Berger.

You need to sort those Hornady bullets. They are inconsistent and have always thrown flyers. It is more rare for them NOT to throw flyers. One of the main reasons most competitive shoots shoot Berger, SMK's, or custom bullets. More consistency in jackets, meplats, and weights.

I know it’s not completely necessary, but when are you going to scoop up a premium scope? Vortex Razor Gen II or Leupold Mk5HD, etc would be a huge step up for testing. Much easier to zero turrets, way better clarity and hell you could confidently shoot groups/ladder-tests at 300/400/500 yards. As a precision rifle guy, optics are integral to accuracy. Also I wouldn’t load the bipod hard into a step. Look up 8541 Tactical video on loading the bipod. It’s about building a bridge from the rifle to shoulder
