Great tutorial "Ford Bendix 101" Something all of us Ford owners need to see.

Hi Mart, interesting problem, I'm a auto electrician, so I have come across this problem before. One other design feature of that starter is that there is a counter weight built into the pinion. It makes the armature turn around until the counter weight goes to the bottom, to help stop the pinion moving along the armature and hitting the flywheel. Vibration can also move the pinion. Many years ago we had a bloke with a F2 race car with a Twin cam Cortina engine. At high RPM it developed a noise, we found the pinion was moving along the armature, we welded a piece of strap to the pinion to make a counter weight, and fixed the issue. Keep the video's coming, all interesting. Byron Bassett Launceston Tasmania

Mart is leading the way for traditional hot rod content! Nice! Just dealt with this issue myself, it would randomly make this noise after about a 20 minute drive. Then one day I hung the starter so we replaced it with a new unit from Third Gen Automotive. Silky smooth ever since.

Thanks for having us in the garage Mart!....I read an answer in another comment, you might be swapping in an OD trans?...I have one in my ‘51 Tudor. Now I just need the time to finish the body and put it back on.....Nice Job on the starter.....take care...Mark

Good job Mart fitting that bracket. Those starters are bloody heavy and they are often left off when they should be used.

Easy peasy getting that starter out Mart. My pickup is RHD and removing the starter is damn near impossible because of the steering box. So it's either lift the motor or deform the sump or remove the bendix to get enough wiggle waggle to pop the puppy out. Well done fixing the problem. Regards Kevin

Mart! i had the same trouble in my 36 pickup, but the ring on the gear did not come off. it took me a bit to figure it out, when i would put on the brakes to stop the noise would start. i thought it was the clutch also. took the starter out, and the Bendix was worn out .Take thanks for the vid, Brendan

Always something, isn’t there? Glad you could get it figured out.

Mart, good job, but on that last start, it also sounded like you may have a spark leak too.

Very interesting Mart. I just had one of those apart a few days ago to clean it up. A spare that was donated to me. They look the same as on the 52-53 Mercury. Even has that little extra side brace to the engine like the one you showed.

Thanks Ralph. It's great when you actually find the faulty part.

Hi Mart... The Crosley engine uses the same design bendix on the Autolite starter . The starter is about 1/2 the size of the 44cid Crosley engine.. useless information for you. Thanks for the videos.

Another accurate diagnosis, and repair! Thanks for sharing, Mart! How are the dual temperature gauges working-out? Are you seeing much fluctuation side-to-side while operating the vehicle? Enjoy! Be safe!

The gauges are good, thanks Harry. Not done too many miles though. The twin gauges would have saved me a lot of grief.

Another good tinkering vid Mart. I had to fix a bent spring and bent bolt on my '28 Chevy starter, same type of bendix. Trying to work out what does what is a challenge, that bob weight containing the plunger and spring must be to do with inertia to get the gear to move, but what does the big spring do? Not sure if the end collar is already engaged in the slots or not at rest, didn't seem like it on mine.

Odd one, usually it's the spring or one of the bolts that give up. My experience is that the Bendix parts should be mounted dry, so the oil won't slow down the movement of the starter motor gear, or get it stuck. I keep a Bendix set up in my car so I can replace it on the road, had to do it one time 400km from home ;-)

Nice little “how to” video Mart. Always enjoyable. What’s the next “big” project going to be?
@MartsGarage2 жыл бұрын
No big car projects but am looking at a four speed plus overdrive conversion possibly in the Sedan.

His Bendix is missing the spring that help keep it from moving forward that most suppliers carry.
@MartsGarage Жыл бұрын
There was nothing missing, the bendix had fallen apart. Thanks for watching, though.

Unless you have an engine stethoscope, use a long piece of wood or a screwdriver to your ear and listen to the individual running parts...

Hi lens. Problem was it was intermittent and when it happened I didn't have anything handy. I have used that method before though and it is worth mentioning.
