Love the armrest idea! I believe it will look beautiful. Like the ugly duckling, it's born ugly and turns into a beauty when done growing. When the lord made me, he gave me the gift of being able to picture the finished product in my mind at the beginning of the project. I believe he gave you that gift too. It seems to me kinda like fixing a mouse chew in an F-hole. I know you did a great job on that. I really like the music in the background when your not talking too, it's a nice touch and makes the video seem even more professional, if that's even possible. Thanks again for sharing your work with us.

This is such a cool idea. I'm glad you saw this and decided to put it on one of your own. Outstanding workmanship and I love your flexibility of thought. If you don't have a plan "B" through " Z" somethings will never get finished. If I had seen your videos about 47 yrs. ago, I might have decided to become a luthier in stead of a machinist.

The biggest use for that surprise is actually a massive boost to tone, if you use it correctly. I never knew that those things had such an important use and I always played the same way for years, but it was pretty eye-opening when I realized the difference it made when I changed my playing style

Jerry the method I have seen, but never tried is to glue the armrest wood flush to the side glue the top on as normal then carve through the top to expose the wood underneath, gives different issues of course like binding. Its an easier method but probably not as nice as the way you have done it. Excellent vid as usual.

Another fine build Jerry! I love the arm rest. I would like to build an acoustic with a more pronounced arm rest. Similar to a Stratocaster. I saw a custom built acoustic guitar in a pawn shop in Salt Lake City years ago that had about a 1 inch bevel right at the top of the lower bout. The builder must of had to bend the top. Great video of your "trade secrets". Thanxz

when you are a 1/16th away from the join, clamp the top on and use your router/dremel with a 1/16th bit and follow the join of the round over timber and the top and then the pieces will fit together perfect.

Fantastic craftsmanship as always. I was just in a music store this week and saw a Martin with a somewhat similar roundover feature. It was one of their lower end models without binding. The roundover was more pronounced than I think yours is going to be - it seemed to extend further down the side. (Wish now I'd taken a closer look at it!)

Jerry, as an alternative once you had the armrest installed and cut back, it would have been easy to make a paper template of it and then sit it or even glue it on the top and mark what to cut off. I'm a great fan of templates. Of course as expected you made a great job of it your way!
@stigolespang98996 жыл бұрын
Love this! Amazing work!!
@larrysauriol7596 жыл бұрын
Hey Jerry, the bevel armrest is a gutsy undertaking, just wondering if you’d have considered fitting up a half or full stiff cardboard template of the top first and and tweak to shape that with scissors, etc., then use that to trim then wooden top. That maybe would have lessened the stomach churning part. SO looking forward to the rest of your guitar build!! And, even though you had that video about the lifestyle change, I think you’re putting up more videos now that even before, and we certainly appreciate it!

I'm just hoping you made templates before you glued the top down. Looks great Jerry. Believe it or not, not only does Taylor make it on their high end guitars, but Washburn has it on some of their models too. I am just an old cabinet maker. I've always called it a "relief cut" for your arm. (Don't know if that is correct). Again, very nice
@jonahguitarguy6 жыл бұрын
Jerry, I think that trepidation is common when trying new things in building. I just delivered the ES 335 I was building and I experienced a number of butt puckers along the way. Steam bending sides for one. Anyway I think it's good to try new things as builders it just keeps it interesting. Also it's looking good, and sounding good. As a side note, Robbie O'Brien has a video on adding an arm contour. He uses a different approach but that doesn't make yours any less valid.
@darrellblanchard23625 жыл бұрын
Jerry, you gave me the nerve to go for the arm bevel on 2 guitars I'm building. Watch Robbie O'Brien's video on the subject very informative. The guitar sounds awesome and looks even better. Great build!

Nice work. I've always wondered about where the bracings should be and it seems that there are no set rules set. Some are glued on "willy nelly" without much considérations about how much they affect the resonance of vibration and sound that too many of them can dampen the sound ? Are there rules or just experience ?

Before you glued in the arm rest I am wondering why you didn't use the piece for a pattern on the top. Just curious.
@lrstaf66 жыл бұрын
After reading the replies, I had another thought, for what it's worth. In the future if your going to use this feature, couldn't you fit the top shape to the armrest before adding the top bracing to make the fitting easier on you? I think your inner and outer binding will be beautiful, but that fit looks so close, that you wouldn't even need a binding to make it look like a good fit. Also, how do you give two thumbs up rather than just one?

Thanks Jerry for another great episode! Question: is there any benefit to the string clamping as opposed to using actual clamps? Keep up the good work man!!
@RosaStringWorks6 жыл бұрын
It's mostly that I want to keep the guitar in the mold until the top is attached. The string works better while the sides are inside the mold. Keep in mind that the back is not touching the bottom of the mold along the sides. So the string doesn't put quite as much pressure as clamps would. And the string spreads out the pressure pretty evenly.

Jerry, where do you find clothes pins that have some strength to them. I have my mothers set from back in the 50s and they have strong springs but the ones I find today are smaller diameter wire and weak.
@willmorrison10226 жыл бұрын
You can fix that by putting rubber bands around the front part of the clothespin. More towards the spring, but on the front half. They just need some support and a rubber band does wonders.

Plotting with a compass might have saved you some time. Offset your center a specific amount, clamp the top, use a compass to plot the same distance to create your cut line. Then sneak up on it.
