226: Rebor Deinosuchus (Swamp variant) Review

Here is something awesome that’s neither dinosaur nor dragon. It’s a crocodilian, and not just any crocodylian. It’s the Terrible Crocodile itself… Deinosuchus!
Crocs are so much a part of the landscape in any dino lover’s mind, that it’s surprising that more of them haven’t been offered. And of all the crocs, the most dangerous badass most people would be thinking of would be Deinosuchus. Forget Sarcosuchus or Purussauraus. This one is truly the one people think of when they think of prehistoric dino! As often the case with Rebor offerings, there are two variants. In this video, I bring you the Swamp variant of this terrible reptile.
Rebor has brought us real gems of more scientifically accurate models of late. Fresh from its big winner with the Rebor T Rexes, it now brings its tremendous talents to bear on a crocodilian, giving us something we have not seen in years.
I can’t wait to see what else they do next, and should they do another croc, it’s gotta be Sarcosuchus!

Fun fact deinosuchus lived on both sides of the Western interior seaway but the eastern species(D.shwimmeri)was more abundant while the Western species(D.Hatcheri) grew bigger,also deinosuchus took a while to grow one man said a full grown deinosuchus must of seen several generations of dinosaurs come and go

Thanks mate! There are many really fascinating aspect of this animal, but I had to edit out a lot of science parts or the video would be intolerably long! Being cold-blooded with such a slow metabolism, I wouldn't be surprised if this thing could outlive the presumably warmer blooded dinos a generation or two. This really is an amazing model and there was already plenty to say and show about it.

I don't even want to compare this beauty with another figure. This is so DAMN gorgeous. There are some beautiful resin models, but even they can't fight with this beauty. I have only one figure from rebor (Komodo dragon/Megalania) and I know how awesome rebor figures can be. And the improvements are visible. So there is nothing to complain about. I think rebor earned its spot in the toy figure industry. So they deserve all the love ❤ my dear Sir, thank you for this amazing video. As always, you make the figure worth more with the details. Thank you Rajitha! Well, this one is easier to hide the seams given the scutes of the animal, so it won't look out of place compared to a much smoother skinned individual. Unfortunately it's a lot harder to hide them for a dinosaur. Even a mammal could have overlapping fur, but dinosaurs are pretty much SOL 😥Regardless, looked at in totality, I admire Rebor for the work it's produced so far!

Thanks mate! This was really an awesome animal although a part of me wishes it was smaller, so it can scale better with the dinos. Still, you can see how much detail can be done if it's on a larger scale so I can't really complain there!

most of the 10-11m estimates are based on the newer finds rather than the largest specimen which is around 12.- 13m long....this large specimen has been known for decades...but most books and media rarely mention it and the museum displays would be of the 10m specimen...there is a book about the history of deinosuchus but its yrs old but still holds up ....iv seen this skeleton and the skull is huge....

I think it is worth bringing to your attention that there was discussion, and concern about the anatomical issues on the Dinotoyforum (maybe elsewhere) while the Rebor figure was in development, some of which went ignored (such as the clawed fourth and fifth digits). I know the Fadeno skeletal you compared it to, was shared, alongside the 2018 paper by Cossette & Brochu, Mark Witton's post, etc. I know Rebor said they referenced the Fadeno skeletal, and others, and also referenced extant crocodilians, which some raised points of contention with doing so. Other then the claws on the digits that shouldn't have them, I don't fully understand what is wrong, but I also have yet to take a look at the material that was suggested to them. Crocodilians are also not my strong suit, and I know I definitely neglect to give them attention and research compared to dinosaurs. At a glance though this is still a good step in the right direction from their previous sculpt work way back. The head is at least more recognizable as from a Deinosuchus now. So even if it might not be the most ideal or accurate representation, it's at least somewhat there, and helps fill a gap that's been on the market since the Carnegie figure retired. I think both renditions look really nice too, and I'm having a hard time deciding which I want. In any case thanks for reviewing both. I'm also curious how this would look next to Safari Ltd's Sarcosuchus. Oh and fun fact, in case folks don't know, the name comes from Metallica. When it was originally sculpted/announced back in the day, it was still called Meta, and it had a Sarcosuchus counterpart called Lica. I can't remember if that one has been redesigned, and if that will see the light of day like this Deinosuchus thankfully did?

Wow thanks for your insight as always Faelrin! Seems like there's plenty of action on your forums just like there are on the Chinese ones, though hopefully more civil lol. Anyway if I were to guess, I think it might be to do with the osteoderms. You can see how thick and round they are, (I believe Dr Witton used the word "inflated keels" to give you an idea of how 'bloated' they look), to the point of losing those keels. Here every single keel is delineated and it looks, at least to my untrained eye, that there is no sign of that bulbous appearance under the flat scutes. You can Google "Dalek" to get an idea of the comparator he used. Generally, most people will look at certain defining and obvious anatomical characteristics as markers for accuracy. For example, Allosaurus with that enlarged thumb claw, centrosaurines with their distinctive epiparietals, and in the case of Deinosuchus it will be those osteoderms. When obvious features that even laymen can see aren't present, it diminishes the enjoyment that someone with that knowledge has. You might ask some of the experts (Every forum has one or two!) what they are specifically unhappy with. Unfortunately, I haven't yet received my Safari Ltd Sarcosuchus. These two animals are a great combo, and if Rebor does do Sarcosuchus soon, then that combo of names coming together is clever! Rebor has done great work in their recent scientific models, and to have that Dynamic Duo of Deinosuchus and Sarcosuchus, and hat their names go together to form Metallica, just appeals to my sense of symmetry!

I think what has changed is the usage of 'terrible', which used to also mean formidable, dreadful, awe-inspiring, the first two relating to the fearful quality of something overawing and powerful. (e.g. "Oz the Great and Terrible") That meaning is somewhat archaic these days. (Awesome has had its own evolution of course, with 'awe-inspiring' retaining the older meaning.)

what is the weight like for this figure? is it a hollow or solid figure? Amazing rendition of deinosuchus and one of my favorite animals to ever exist!

I don't know if it's hollow, but it certainly feels solid to me! As for the weight, the tail is 131g (0.3lb), the body 585g (1.3lb), the Appalchiasaurus remains 14g (0.5oz). The whole croc is thus 716g (1.6lb).

To imagine that it may have come into contact with tylosaurus and cretoxyrhina in the western interior seaway (although unlikely)! Also Fadeno and some other works have recently put the largest specimen of deinosuchus TMM 43632-1 at a staggering 11-13.5 tons! truely massive

This is a really nice model! Awesome creature that could apparently take out a T. rex! Might be difficult to get here in Australia now as we don't have a local importer anymore! BTW, you are far too modest when you say you know little about crocodilians; we learn a mountain of information on all your videos!

You are in luck! My family speaks Greek and I can confirm that deinos (δεινός) means "terrible" or "horrible" or "amazing (in a way that inspires fear or reverence)" or "mighty scary or dreadful thing etc." But you might be hard pressed to find it outside if a dictionary, its not common vocabulary Sorry for editing this so many times I was about to go to bed so I had many typos hah

Finally! Been waiting ages for an adult specimen! I reviewed one of the hatchling models last year. The jaw mechanism on this model is odd, but the skull proportions give it menace! Its going to look great in the marine exhibits!

Tell me about it! There were several times I tried opening it from the mandible. But I guess it makes sense, since it's laying flat on the ground, the only way it opens it's mouth is the top, just like real crocs. Otherwise we would have the same situation as with PNSO's Andrea, where people are scratching their heads wondering what good is an articulated mandible on an animal lying with chin to ground. The only thing I see that would be a problem is damaging that paint and gloss by repeated friction.

Yes it's supposed to be, but I dare not move it too much for fear of developing cracks in the plastic after many times. So I tend to keep my straight or with just a very very slight curve.

Deinosuchus could actually grow larger than 10 metres. New estimates give a length of almost 14 metres and a weight of over 10 tons. What scale would it be with a length of 14 metres?

Could you give me a reference? Last I heard, the largest estimate was about 15m from Schwimmer, which has been called into doubt. This one I estimate at about 44cm, so for 14m it would be about 1:32.

I just started my collection about lesser than a month ago. I first get the Nanmu. Then I am obsessed with PNSO after I learned they are scientific restoration dinosaurs. First I think they are super ugly compared with Nanmu, but day by day I think they look better and better. So they are now in my main display. And Namu are at my secondary display. I have almost all of them now besides museum version most of them were too old. I did bought Wilson 1.0 2020 version none museum just to solute Mr Zhao. I heard that one is hand sculpted.

hi Dinos, i have a question techinally saying can u say it can you say Meta can be 1/35 scale? Because thet modern relatives are usually 16ft max but there where grow to 21ft and even 23ft was recorded so can we say they're a older Bull(Male) Deinosuchus?

Hi Shawn, that's a good question. I know comparatively little about crocs, but in general for extinct animals, some leeway in terms of a ± x% can be added to the length of the animal to account for upper and lower extreme limits. The most optimistic estimate I know of for Deinosuchus is about 12m. This model is about 44cm, meaning 1:35 represents 15.4m (50.5ft) which is about 25% over that. Also, animals aren't expanded volumetrically and in all directions. You notice how in extant animals, a certain % increase in length does not correspond to the same overall %increase in scaling. I'm afraid I've been pretty lazy when it comes to allometry, but it's definitely on my todo list of things to read! Hopefully someone can give you a better answer 😊

Well, Tyrannosaurs have been evolving & changing over Millions of years from the Mid Jurassic Period to the Early, Mid & Late Cretaceous Period. Plus, If I remember correctly, Appalachiosaurus was from the Late Cretaceous Period.

Also, I wrote to Safari Ltd some time ago about making a Appalachiosaurus figure someday along with some of the other Animals & Dinosaurs that have yet to be released as Figures. That’s how I finally got a Nanotyrannus & a Stygimoloch in my collection. The Nanotyrannus & the Stygimoloch were one of the few dozen requests I wrote to Safari Ltd. I’ll check & see what they’re doing this time. & hopefully they still have the list of the new requests I thought of. Especially those to bring the attention of preserving real Endangered Species. Speaking of which, 0:50 I have Prehistoric Park on DVD. A few copies just Incase if something should ever happen to one of the DVDS.
