Shower pump teardown, in the mornings my shower pump would make enough noise to wake the dead let alone a sleeping wife.
Follow along as i take it apart to see what made all the noise.

Nice. The moving magnet is often used with a hall effect sensor to switch on and off water pumps based on water flow demand.

In the end the hot water flow would not set the pump running. So it had to be replaced new one is nice and quiet, well as quiet as a pump can be.

Slap some new bearings in it and it will probably be all good again, alignment has shifted because of the bearings getting loose, well apart from that seal which broke... damn.

I think the rotors were well past there prime, been running ruff for far to long. the tolerances are so close on these that a doggy bearing just takes them out. Just got to hope the replacement lasts a lot longer, went for the same pump again as it's far easer to fit just 4 pipes already in the correct place and length. Was hoping it would turn out to be just a capacitor 🙂

It's a hall switch making the unit you dismanled a flow switch, which the circuit uses to detect the motor is pumping.

Indeed that's what it looks like, seems like it didn't like the hard water we have here. Just a shame the bearings didn't hold up to a few years of intermittent operation.

You need a gear/bearing puller or a wood brace and a hammer to release it.

In the end they went hand in hand to the local recycling centre.

Interesting pump. I would guess the one bearing failed and allowed the shaft to move side to side and a little in and out. I imagine the impellers have very close tolerance with the housing, so the failed bearing would definitely let them come into contact. I wonder if it is a pressure sensor or a flow sensor. It looks like a tiny impeller that would spin up and pull the shaft up with the force of the flow. I know these things switch on pressure but what was on your bench looked like a tiny impeller.

In the end it was making one hell of a noise, and the hot water taps could not turn it on. At close to £300 it was a pain in the wallet to replace.

@@TheEmbeddedHobbyist I've been in the situation where I've shelled out top dollar for an item, expecting it to be bullet proof and it turns out to be as bad as the cheap alternatives. The other end of that is where a cheap alternative performs better than the branded versions at 1/3 the price. Brand trust is the victim in all this.

Ye gods, 300 quid! For that price you would expect some quality bearings. I had to Google "shower pump" to find out what it is used for - homes with low supply pressure. I assume the crossover tube prevents pump damage if just the hot or cold tap is opened? Thanks for showing its guts to us. Regards, David

Our water is tank fed from the loft which is normal in the UK, so never much pressure for the shower head which is only a few feet lower than the tank. If it had been a £10 pump it would have been thrown in the bin and no video made, but I thought it was worth it for an expensive one.

Is this a shower pump? We don't have a pump on our shower.

it was fitted about 4 years ago when we had the family bathroom redone and the bubble bath replaced with a walking shower. So with two showers the gravity fed hot and cold water could not cope. So Plummer fitted the pump, its meant to have a 5 year guarantee. but they put so many loops to jump through that i gave up and just bought a new one for £300. 😞
