I'm 78 years old and I have switched to a .22LR for My EDC. I have been a Glock Guy for almost all of my shooting life and I also carried a G19 as my Duty Weapon for over 10 years up to my retirement! I still have a G48 which I love but I now shoot only 22LR or 22 magnum! I stay sharp by shooting once every week at my LGR here in Florida and I feel very comfortable and confident with my P17 as my EDC! As we become older, adjustments have to be made and I have made them as part of my New Shooting Life! Stay Sharp and Safe!

Let's face it, for personal self defense where the goal is to break contact, a 22 that can be shot quickly and accurately is all anybody would need. And, frankly, it looks a lot better if you have to face a jury in these crazy times. I love my fancy 9 mm with a custom slide and holosun red dot, but my edc is a Ruger SR22.

There are studies of shootings, one shot stops and full mag stops, seems 380 is minimum and bigger calibers are better, if you can shoot them well.

Velocitors and Stingers are what I consider my defense rounds. I chose 22lr for a lot of reasons: 1. Cheap 2. Good entry point into firearms 3. Low recoil 4. Light weight (Something not mentioned in your video. My own research places 130-140 rounds / pound. Other calibers are around 40 and lower.) 5. Future proof for CA laws. A lot of the firearm regulations here in CA have excluded rimfire by name in the written laws. I figure by the time they start regulating and banning rimfire, I'll either be using my rifle out in the woods to survive Civil War 2, or the gun grabbers are finally being honest and trying to ban all guns... Hmm. So, yeah. In both situations I'm in the woods hunting squirrels and rabbits and hiding from Civil war 2. 6. Can be deadly with good shot placement. Not the best, but deserving of respect.

I carried a 22LR for CCW until I could afford a centerfire. With a 22LR, don't stop with the first shot, fire in bursts, assess and follow up. More holes is more effective, in any caliber.

I clearly stated: (1) that the thug, even if he received only a relative minor .22 LR wound, would probably require ER treatment; (2) that, therefore, law enforcement would be notified and would investigate; and (3) finally, that the thug would thus be arrested. How in the world could this possibly be interpreted as “coddling” criminals? In addition, I never denied the .22 LR’s efficacy; however, there is no question: (a) that it is not as effective as the common defensive handgun rounds (such as the 9x19mm, the .40 S&W, the .45 ACP, the .357 magnum, and so forth) and (b) that all the common handgun rounds are marginal “immediate threat stoppers” in comparison to most well respected long-gun centerfire ammunition (both shotgun and rifle). As for my comment concerning compliance with local laws, if a thug has robbed an individual and is WALKING AWAY - those are your precise words - from the crime, then in many justifications the immediate threat of dire injury or death to innocents has ended and, whether or not you agree, shooting the felon at that point is ABSOLUTELY NOT legally sanctioned.

I think 22lr is a good choice for a young or elderly person . Its also fun to shoot. Great job as always. I was surprised how far they went through the clothing sample then the block ! My elderly mother has that same pistol . I like my 9mm pistol so I'll stay with it for me.

Most people underestimate the damage a .22 can do. Sure, bigger calibers (with the appropriate bullets) can do more damage but they are also more difficult to control for follow-up shots and the guns themselves are bigger and heavier.

I been enjoying the velociters. They're loud as hell but they're fun to shoot and have some authority for a .22lr. The one thing gell tests domt always tell is how the round also disrupts bones. That's a very important factor too, and then of course the psychological effect on drawing a gun on someone with a knife

Big fan of . 22lr and 22 mag. For almost any aspect. Good hunting round , cost effective and will work for self defense with good shooting skills and the right firearm just as the same for any pistol cartridge. I think is a must buy for a collection pistol and rifle . For self defense a revolver would be the best choice in my opinion. Quality control has gone way up since they earned a rep. for unreal liability. Thank you for the great video keep em coming 👍

Very interesting and well done. Like your videos, succinct, lots of good info, and professionally done. I practice most of time with the 22lr. I switch over to 9mm for the last 20 to 30 mins. The CCI ammo always fires. I am virtually always very accurate out to 15 yds. The 9mm accuracy varies from session to session. I started carrying an sr22 with a 4.5 in barrel; in the summer, abt 2 yrs ago. As we all know, shot placement is most important. I know I have that with the CCI Velocitor. So, thank you and I’m so glad you’re again posting your work! Is .22 LR a “reasonable” defensive load? Well, I respectfully suggest felons may be grouped into three broad categories: a. Those who will disengage and flee/surrender with minimum resistance from the lawful citizen (ranging from “Get the hell out of here, I’ve called the cops,” to a light illuminated, a slide racked, a shot fired, a dog viciously barking, or a minor - non-lethal and not seriously debilitating - wound). b. Those who will fight tenaciously, probably ceasing their criminal aggressiveness ONLY when they succumb or when their wounds preclude physical activity (to illustrate this, the two murderers in the FBI’s April ‘86 Miami shootout tragically killed two Special Agents and wounded five more, although one suffered a dozen gunshot wounds and the other six). c. Those who will quit after a significant wound(s), although not necessarily one that is immediately-fatal or immediately-incapacitating. Based on the foregoing, I respectfully suggest that those in category “a” will likely be deterred by a handgun chambered in .22 LR (will these individuals appreciate the difference in bore size and resulting destructive potential between a .22 and a .44 or .45 . . . I doubt it). However, those in categories “b” and “c” need - at an ABSOLUTE MINIMUM - to be seriously hurting before they “throw in the towel.” While it is obvious a .22 LR hit (or hits) can instantaneous kill or disable, the proabrbility of achieving the necessary debilitation for those in group “c” to quit is certainly greater with wound(s) from 9x19mm, .38 Special +P, a .45 ACP, a .41 Magnum, and so forth chambered handguns. Finally, those in category “b” are even more unlikely to surrender with not-immediately-lethal handgun wounds; these are the extremely determined criminals, for whom defensive long-guns may be required (or highly preferable). Naturally, eventually fatal hits or incapacitating wounds from handguns will ultimately eliminate the threat, BUT THE VITAL ISSUE IS THE HARM TO INNOCENTS THAT WILL OCCUR IN THE INTERIM.

More videos, please! 40 years ago I was accidentally shot in the calf of my right leg by a .22. While it was not life threatening, it hurt like hell and it took 14 months for me to walk normal again! Had I been interested in stealing your wallet, sexual assault, or jacking your car, I can ASSURE YOU a shot from a .22 would change my mind! We need to keep in mind that self defense is about changing people's behavior. If you shoot an attacker with a .22 and he runs away, YOU WIN! The criminal that attacked you will be easy to find when he seeks medical help, and he WILL seek medical help, or die 3 blocks away. Either way, it's all good for YOU. You are not a law enforcement officer, you will not be called to face armed and desperate criminals or serve warrants on drug houses. You are defending yourself from someone who would do you harm. The natural reaction to being shot is "HOLY F**K HE/SHE IS SHOOTING ME!" and to run away. We can see it in countless security videos. An armed individual starts shooting and the bad guys scramble away ASAP! There are simply way too many UNarmed potential victims for a criminal to have any desire to deal with someone that has a gun. ANY GUN. .22 is NOT my choice for self defense, however, if you feel it is the best choice for you (for any number of reasons) then go forth armed and confident. What about drug crazed, bath salt zombies? Have you heard of any that took shots from a .22 and didn't lose interest in that "victim"?

Back in the early '80's I knew a guy that was shot 6 times with a .22. He died a week later. The Dr. said the danger from a .22 is it has the velocity to enter but not enough to pass thru and veers all directions in the body. And the bullet lube gave him a bad infection they lost the battle with.

Great data and commentary, as always. When faced with a life or death situation, you always go with what you have. Some folks (like me) carry a .22 as a hold-out or backup. If you're lucky and/or skilled enough to get a .22 where it will incapacitate, you're ahead of the game (unless your stick is VERY sharp.) It's also worth mentioning the tragic case of South Carolina Trooper Mark Hunter Coates, a law enforcement hero who was killed by a slow-moving .22 bullet fired from a North American Arms revolver with a 1 & 1/8" or 1 & 5/8" barrel. (I can't remember if it was an LR or magnum; they have different barrel lengths.) IMHO, If you think you'll every need to use a .22 handgun in self defense, expansion will likely never occur and you should instead look to penetration and - perhaps most importantly - reliable operation in your EDC of choice. Thanks to tnoutdoors9, we have a wealth of data to help inform our choices.

The Velocitor makes a lot of sense out of a rifle-length barrel, where I've seen it consistently achieve 12+" of penetration while expanding to frankly impressive degrees. For a pistol, I'd just stick with the Mini-Mag solids, however.

Thanks for your video! This is a revelation for 22 LR pistol and self defense as far as this round is concerned. At 2:34.....For those of you who don't have patience....That is what you wanted to know. This is the highest energy you will ever reach out of this barrel, 3.5 inches. I've seen other videos where the fps is a little bit higher enough out of a 5 inch barrel and it crosses the 100 ft-lbs energy line, but barely. It did also fully expand most of the times, which is a little better than a 3.5 barrel. If there is a round you want for self defense, this is it! This is the most powerful 22 LR round for a handgun. Period.

.22LR is useful for self defense--especially if fired from a 3-4 inch barrel to boost muzzle velocity. The .22 guns are basically the successor to budget .25 ACP guns "poor commoners" used to carry back in the 1970s for self defense. This was a very informative video. Thanks.

This shows that while they may not expand they do tend to tumble, which is an effective wounding method as well. I just bought a SR22 for plinking and really love the pistol itself it turns out. One thing not discussed in this video is cavitation effect on wound effect and its effect on stopping power. The cavitation in the gel is clearly visible on the "dressed" shots and it is clear that a double tap on a dressed 2-legged predator wearing denim will create a permanent wound cavity and immediately stop that guy from coming at you. Extend that mag to 15 before it's banned and carry that bad boy.

Damn, love your reviews! My Wife is a slight little thing and is very recoil sensitive and has a Ruger SR22 with FibreOptic Sights, Crimson Trace Laser and 15 Round Mag Extensions. I would not want to be the bad guy coming down the hallway! She uses CCI Velocitor and MiniMags. My Sig 226 is just too heavy for her, and she would rather use a sharp stick over the Glock19, she can't hold onto the thing with her small hands. Great review!!!

I considered the SR22 for CCW, and bought an IWB holster for it. The thought process was that I could easily put 10 rounds on target, with minimal recoil. It never happened, as I went with a single stack 9mm, but 22LR is still better than finger nails and four letter words.

Another of my favorites. surplus Beretta 81, got it for a song. No handpick. Excellent condition. Put LOK thin checkered black and red G 10 grips on it. Made it feel way better in the hand. Re-purposed a good quality IWB El Paso saddlery rough out leather “government 45 “holster.Clamped & marked with a fine point sharpie. Used smallest drillbit I have for the holes and saddle stitched it with a built in slight cant . Worked out great. Five dollars, bargain bin. A little bit of my daughters nylon kite string and a couple needles from the craft store. That gun shoots laser beams. Great follow up shots.. first experience with 32acp. Really like it. Manufacturer recommends 71 grain round nose ammo. No malfunctions whatsoever. Carry it with one HST hollowpoint and the rest 71 gain As recommended. It would most likely do fine with all hollow points. Haven’t tried it yet.

Welcome back!!! I've spoken with law enforcement officers & paramedics regarding the effectiveness of a 22lr EDC carry in a semi auto e.g. an SR22. These people have been called to the scene of perps shot with this caliber. They unanimously say they consider it just as effective as the common center fire handgun rounds. Yes, you don't get expansion, but you don't want expansion. The FBI rates effectiveness by penetration, not expansion. 12"+ does the job. You got that even through "heavy clothing". Expansion is only useful to prevent over penetration so a bystander isn't shot. Expansion us not necessary to stop a threat. Regards, 👍😋🇺🇸

Cci mini mag 36 grain hp. Hard to beat in pistol or rifle. Killed plenty of small game but also plenty of deer under 100 yards with it. Yes legal in my state. Some head shots but most right behind shoulder. They go in deform and rattle around in chest cavity chewing up lungs and heart

I absolutely love the .22 LR round. With that being said I do believe the .22 LR has excellent potential to be a fantastic self defense round but it does have its limitations. I personally own a Ruger Mark IV pistol and have no issues at all as my home defense pistol or vehicle if needed. The 6” barrel gives great velocity and unmatched accuracy. When it comes to using a .22 LR in smaller frame 3” barrel there is a huge loss in velocity. In that situation I would prefer to carry a .45 or .357 in a 2-3” barrel. Just my opinion

Our ancestors were using .22lr in black powder in small derringers and pocket snub revolvers as early as 1880s, and those bullets were probably moving at much lower speeds around 700 + ft/sec, yet they used them for self-defense. From what i can remember of prior testing by you and others, it seems like Mini Mag is a good way to go in handguns, and the barrel length should be 4" or longer. Of course, a 9mm or 38 Spl +P is a better choice for a primary handgun. But the 22 has uses for people who can't tolerate recoil or may lack hand strength. A SA 22 revolver can be fired quickly with practice and might work for folks like that, and many of them hold more than 6 rounds. Food for thought. Of course, a 4-5/8" Blackhawk with 38 +P would be a better choice, but again some ppl might find it too heavy to hold. A DA snubby may not be a good choice due to trigger pull weight. I'm so happy you're back. I couldn't agree more with the video. Perhaps you should try Winchester Super X if you plan on doing more rimfire testing, it's a 40 grain hollow point rated at "1435" fps and I know it anchors rabbits like a 50 pound anvil from a rifle.

Really glad to see you back, your videos are very informative and changed my entire daily carry after your 9mm ballistics testing. After watching a couple of your videos on the .22lr I was wondering if you have or would test just plain old 38 or 40 grain unjacketed lead solids? I wonder if they might expand better out of a 22 pistol being unjacketed and the lower velocity than all of the jacketed hollow points. Just a theory. Anyway, welcome back.

Welcome back and thank you for the great footage. Have missed your work. . 22lr for self defense; marksmanship is all about shot placement. If one is a Master Class IPSC shooter with extensive combat experience then have at it. I do realize it is all about shot placement but preference is something more in the 230gr weight range as no matter how good you are.....your opponent could possibly be better.

Nothing to worry about Doctor. It is ONLY 22 caliber you're digging out. The bleeding is only from small holes. GOOD to hear you again. Be Well.

Pretty cool gelatin tests. I thought I saw some flashes of light from dieseling with 3 shots in the 2nd string (the "clothed" gelatin string), and sure enough! First time I've ever seen that happen with .22LR in a gelatin test. That alone was worth the price of admission, but the rest of the video was also nicely done. I don't discount the .22 LR for self-defense. It's not my go-to choice, but if it were all I had when goblins came through my front door, I sure wouldn't put it down and pick up a golf club instead! Cheers.

The first dead man I saw was way back in 1969 when I was a 20 year old Morgue attendent. He was killed by a single shot from a 22 right in the heart but I had trouble finding the bullet hole as it was so small but it apparently did the job. Never have forgotten that sight.

I've seen enough videos of armed citizens defending themselves to be convinced that 80-90% of the time you could succesfully defend yourself with a blank firing replica, so a .22lr and the right attitude will almost always win the fight. Me personally, I'm still going to choose 9mm, 5.56, and 12ga when I can.
