The common peroneal nerve, a branch of the sciatic nerve, is crucial for motor and sensory innervation of the lower limb. 🦵
It splits into the superficial peroneal nerve and the deep peroneal nerve, each serving distinct functions and regions:
1) Superficial Peroneal Nerve:- nerve branches off from the common peroneal nerve in the lateral leg and courses superficially along the fibula. It provides motor innervation to the peroneus longus and peroneus brevis muscles, which are responsible for eversion and plantar flexion of the foot, respectively. The superficial peroneal nerve also supplies sensory fibers to the skin on the dorsum (top) of the foot and the anterolateral leg.
2) Deep Peroneal Nerve:- The deep peroneal nerve continues its course deep within the anterior compartment of the leg, providing motor innervation to the muscles that dorsiflex the foot, including the tibialis anterior, extensor digitorum longus, extensor hallucis longus, and fibularis tertius muscles. Additionally, it innervates the muscles that extend the toes and the skin between the first and second toes. The deep peroneal nerve is also responsible for providing sensory innervation to the web space between the first and second toes.
Understanding the anatomy and function of the common peroneal nerve, as well as its superficial and deep branches, is crucial for medical exams such as FMGE, NEET PG, and USMLE. This knowledge is foundational for diagnosing and managing conditions affecting these nerves, such as peroneal nerve injuries, nerve entrapments, and motor and sensory deficits in the lower limb. 📚
