I would enjoy staying in a guest room like this. I love the uncluttered, hotel feel. I imagine a lot of people can't afford a house with an extra bedroom that is only used by guests, but for those who can, this is great! Even if you don't have a dedicated guest bedroom, there are tips you can take from this to help your guests feel more comfortable. I agree that having a room so jam packed that there is no room to put your stuff can be frustrating.

We used to live in a tiny apartment and created a "guest space" in the middle of our living room when we had people visit. I have a post about it on my blog. I don't think the size of the space matters--it's the thought and love behind it that counts.

This is very sweet and lots of great tips! However I would never except anyone to go all out for me when I’m staying at their home! At the end of the day it’s THEIR house you are staying at they can have whatever they want in that room (stuff in the closet, dressers, etc.) All I think a guest should always have no matter what is a clean uncluttered room to stay in, clean sheets and bed linens, and clean towels. No one wants to stay in a cluttered dirty place.

Love this. You’re so pleasant and friendly. One more thing - A FAN!!! Every single place I have stayed I CRAVED having a fan!! Even if there’s a ceiling fan, sometimes they’re too loud or wobble. i’m a teenager so obviously i won’t be setting up a guest room anytime soon lol but i love watching home style videos and i noticed that when i spend the night at my friends houses their parents do some of the same things in their guest bedroom that you do and it’s definitely more cozy so that my friend group doesn’t end up sleeping on blankets on cold floors, or going without snacks once everyone else goes to bed and we feel like it’s rude to rummage through someone’s kitchen at midnight.

Those are all great tips! I think it depends on the generation. I don't feel like I'm intruding in someones home if they have personal pictures in the room. It is their house not a hotel which makes it cozy. Homes are such a personal space and I love seeing how people do different things for ideas to make mine more inviting. The blackout curtain suggestion is a great one. Having a little guest book so people can log their ideas while they stay there would be awesome too and read through over the years. A suitcase holder for your closet would be a great addition.

The robes are also a good idea because a comfy modest robe is bulky to pack. A guest may need the bathroom unexpectedly and having a robe at hand will spare them from getting fully dressed. The alarm clock is a good idea, but I would use a mechanical wind-up style. Some of the digitals require a few pages of instructions. Provide a wastebasket if you don't have one in the guest bathroom.

A couple random things to add... 1) It's nice to have the set of towels on the bed, but also the towels in the bathroom separate. Sometimes, I just have a friend over but not overnight and they need to freshen up and perhaps take a shower. In those cases, they have the towels available in the bathroom. 2) A carafe or two for if they exhaust the supplied water bottles. I like the carafes that have a water glass for a top. Definitely have coasters as you mentioned. 3) Some reading material...I put a book of short stories (Hemingway) for something to read without getting too involved, a murder mystery (Agatha Christie), a sci-fi book, a novel that revolves around the local area, a tourist book on the state and a tourist book about the local area, plus a book of puzzles. 4) If you do have a TV for the room and you have streaming services, check on the TV occasionally to make sure it's updated (apps and TV operating system) and that the remote batteries are good (and haven't leaked!). If you ever mess around with streaming services logins, make sure to keep this TV in the loop. A side bonus is to put a Blu-ray player in there as well. 5) A white noise device that has different effects available is nice to have, along with a couple washable sleep masks. 6) A night light that can be set to come on with low light conditions and/or motion-sensing. 7) A recurring calendar reminder to chow down on the basket of goodies and replace them...I set this for 4 months. 8) My guest room is too small to put chairs in, and they could stub toes if they were there. Instead, I put two padded folding chairs in the closet along with two folding tray tables. 9) A tower fan is in my guest room (since I have no ceiling fan in there), and this fan has a remote. In the closet, I have a desk fan and a small space heater. 10) A bedside lamp. 11) In the basket of goodies, a bottle of Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and some antacid tablets...hopefully not needed due to anything I did! This can help with minor overnight discomforts.

Thank you for the great tips! I will definitely be using these when I move into my new home. I think I would add a desk fan for guests who need white noise to sleep. I've stayed at so many homes where I've had to wait for the AC to kick on to fall asleep (and then sometimes I'd wake up when it kicks off). I would also add a box of tissues to the nightstand.

Your guest room is very pretty and neatly set up. Good job. Our guest room is very similar to yours. Our guest room is downstairs right next to the downstairs bathroom while our bedrooms are all upstairs. The washer & dryer are in that bathroom as well. We don't do a gift though or the robes. We keep two extra fleece blankets in the bottom dresser drawer for the guests, if needed. In the top dresser drawer I have a local phone book. On top of the dresser we have a guest log book where they sign in when they stay, I really like that and they write nice little notes. We also have an old blue Mason jar with mini candy bars in it, a vintage blue vase with artificial seasonal flowers, an old garden tin with local brochures and magazines of events, shopping, restaurants, and things to do in the area. There is also a calender. We have a desk fan for noise and a box fan to use if they're hot and an infared heater in case they're cold. There is also a sheet that contains the step by step instructions for operating the infared heater, the TV, DVD player, and Wii game system. The TV, DVD player, & Wii game system are all in the downstairs living room by the guest room, so if my family is upstairs sleeping, the guests are free to stay up and watch a movie or something. The sheet also tells them they are free to use anything they see as their own, including washing their laundry. In addition to this we also have 3 air mattresses for the additional company that stays over the weekend for our childrens' B-Day parties. Thankfully, we have the extra room downstairs to accommodate the air mattresses and still allows complete privacy for one of the air mattresses. 😉 Well, have a great day and again, your guest room is beautiful.

I totally agree with the food thing. I like snacks and always carry them now because I get peckish at night. I agree with all of these. Esp the power board. The number of times I’ve gone somewhere and there is no where to charge my phone or any blankets or pillows or anything and I feel like such a pain to ask for stuff. I’m happy to ask for one thing, Maybe two. More than that is super awkward! I have a large wooden trunk at the end of a bed for me. It’s got spare blankets and pillows in it and I let people know it’s all in there. Oh and as someone with long hair the towel thing is totally appreciated! I always appreciate it when people have tissues. I get allergies and it’s a big deal for me.

Great ideas Blair. I think the wifi password framing is the coolest idea! I may use that because my modem isn't conveniently located to go get and I always need to whenever we have guests and what a nice way to great people! I will have to think of a cute design that fits with that room that I could frame! Thanks for that and the other ideas! The snack basket is another great idea too! :)

Omg I didn’t even think about that. Yeah, I’d feel like I’m intruding if there’s photos/belongings in a guest room of someone’s house I’m staying in. That’s a great tip, thanks.

When I moved out of my family’s home and out of the room that used to be mine that is now a guest room, the part of my old closet where you hang clothes became my dad’s closet for his nicer shirts. We always just lived out of our luggage because that was what we are used to. In the room there are 2 beds and a little table in between and no other furniture. The shelves below the hanging area in the closet we could put things if we so wished but at the very bottom is extra linens such as pillows , sheets and comforters for guests. Yes it would be more homey to have a place for our clothes but at my parents place, this is just how it works for us however, I agree if you have the space for a guest room to have it free for use by guests. I don’t have a guest room in my one bedroom apartment, however, I do have space for a chair that turns into a mattress to be brought in my bedroom if my sister decides to stay and she has a couch that turns into a bed when I or others stay. It just works for us.I have extra space in my front hall closet if people need to hang things up, same with my sister but it is not a necessity for us.

The laundry idea is so generous....it's wonderful to go home wth clean clothes. One thing I take advantage of at my sister in Florida lol.

These are great ideas to welcome your guests! I like to have some information about the city available. I found a really cool history/picture book about my city to lay out and I also like to include some information about some of my favorite local attractions and restaurants in case guests are heading out on their own at all. Going along with your blankets, on the opposite end, I like to include a small fan even though there is a ceiling fan. A lot of my family like the sound of a fan when sleeping and I can't sleep if I'm hot so I like to have that easily available if guests are anything like me! Last, I like to include a few first aid basics in the nightstand like Tylenol, tums, band aids and tissues just in case they need them but don't want to ask! I've thought about adding a small clothes steamer to the closet too in case clothes get wrinkled in transit but haven't added that yet!

I was going to comment the same thing about the fan! I have to sleep with a fan, no matter the temperature, just for the noise.

A fan is a great idea. Thank you! I'm going to order a small one to tuck in the shelf on the closet. That way guests can pull it out if they want the white noise or the airflow. Thanks for the great suggestion!!!

I have 3 frequent guests and each have their own set of towels that I wash and only give to them, I have extra that any infrequent guests use but I just have my little stack of towels especially for those three
