One of the main reasons I subscribe to this channel…a no nonsense real world honest review. Well done! Torn between adding another Forman (old 2008 will not die) or a Pioneer 520. 100% work machines that can fit in narrow places. Soooo…am really looking forward to your upcoming Pioneer 520 review Hint hint.

Hey DumdocMTL, We picked up a Pioneer 520 for our WV farm/tract summer of '23 and absolutely love it. It's my mom's "buggy" for now until I pick up a can am defender pro (long bed) for myself and for more serious chores. I feel like a lot of the reviews are fairly accurate. This is our first side by side and one of the best aspects of owning one is being able to park the big/heavy/expensive pickup trucks and zip around in this thing! Saves wear and tear on the trucks. The P520 isn't a showy or go-fast buggy but is simple, reliable, and can be fun if you don't expect too much from its limited suspension and "OK" but moderate power. The buggy sat for several months and the temps recently dropped but the 520 started right up after a few seconds cranking! Once she fired, I did a fair amount of playing in the 6" of fresh powder we had inand the 520 really did surprise me! With such a short wheelbase, power slides and drifting gets a little sketchy but that's part of the fun - right ;) I was in and out of some water/mud then back in the snow at speed and the rear When the unit is in 4wd it's a literal bulldog, but it just doesn't have much weight to it if you're going to try towing heavy loads. It's also very quiet thanks to the smallish engine and non-cvt trans. Since you're sitting on it, the engine also functions as a built-in heater. The trans is jerky in the lower gears but you get used to it and it does smooth out a little bit upon break-in. Top speed is pretty low so if you're planning on covering terrain at speed, this isn't your buggy. We're just over our first maintenance interval and the oil change was more complicated than what I'd expect from a honda (you have to remove the seats, fiddle with 10 plastic snaps, remove the computer, etc) to get to get the job done. Don't get me wrong, it's not a hard job, just not as simple and quick as I'd expect from big red. I could pick apart some of the other niggles of the buggy but overall, you'll see in some of the reviews similar complaints from others. (reverse is kinda weird to engage, the mesh doors suck, the twist latches are odd... etc). Nothing big enough of a drawback to keep us from buying one. We also purchased a lot of honda bolt-ons which added up quickly for our OTD price (windshield, bumpers, winch, nerf bars, skids, etc). I'll definitely be adding power steering this spring to make it easier for my mom to steer and for low speed turning... I'm not a weakling but it is a little difficult to turn at low speeds/connecting a trailer and I see my mom struggling. As much as they ask for it, IMO, it should have come with power steering. Considering adding an aftermarket heating unit before next winter with fabric/plastic cab. The stock tires are ok for utility use but aren't great if you'll be in a lot of mud. I'm not in a hurry to replace "free" tires honda provided but when these wear out, I'll put a little taller and more aggressive tire on the factory wheels. Overall, we love the thing but by the time we got it out the door, we were in P700 territory and if I had it to do over again, may re-consider going with a larger unit as we're not size-restrained. Other than that, it's a stout little rig that definitely hits above it weight and will be used by us for a long time to come. Let me know if you have any other questions! Happy to help.

Thanks WV farm. Compact and nimble are key to our operation…lots of fencing in tight bush/swampy locations. AND granny and old dog need to be able to handle it too.

First time that I disagree with you CVT for ripping down, trails is not better. It actually sucks for people that know how to ride being able to shift into a turn out of a turn much better than sitting there lazy with a belt.

1st thing for me to say.... I know 3 people with Honda's, all 2018+, all have major auto trans issues where they don't know when to shift, and especially uphill. One owner had it in over 13x, 10,000+ km, and a co outer recorder strapped to the pod for analysis. Only then did they throw in the towel and give her a new one. The other two owners never got a resolution.

I’m not a fan of the auto shift with these transmissions either. My pioneer 1000-5 was the same way in that it was always searching for the right gear. I put it to manual mode and never took it off…lol.

As a die-hard Honda guy (who also has a Sportsman in the garage too) I would say that Honda is the Glock of ATVs. Not flashy, dated tech, slow to evolve, lots of upgrades needed right out of the box to get the functionality the competition, but they run.

Storage has always been a big overlook on Honda’s part across all there machines. I always find the seat comfort is great if they could just do a bit better on suspension they would be much more enticing for potential buyers for sure.

Great review, I'm trying to decide what to buy, 4-wheeler or SXS. I currently own a 2011 Polaris Ranger I bought new and mostly use it for around the house and very casual riding fire roads now and then. I've owned many atv's in the past, it's just so hard to decide but I'm kinda leaning toward this very machine with power steering. I love the reliable foot shifter and gear on gear transmissions. However I've had nothing but fantastic luck and reliability out of the CVT transmissions from Polaris and kawasaki. Really great review and fun to watch. Thanks for the info, new subscriber also!!

Polaris has jumped on the offensive price hike band wagon. They used to be untouchable for price. Now they are offensive. Canada has taken over the main brand pricing with the new 500/700 platform. CF Moto is getting some good reviews these days, but they retain no value, so pulling the trigger on one is a money risk. Which as much as I dislike Honda's based on friends'experiences, at least they retain value.

Honda built their reputation for reliability on the back of the Fourtrax 300 for 12yrs. It was plain simple & it worked. The new stuff they put out isn’t nowhere near the reliability of the 300. Honda has its loyal diehards just like Ford, GM & Dodge. However they are definitely at the back of the pack when it comes to features for the money. I mean they didn’t even make a bike with a locking front differential until just a few years ago. I personally prefer to ride my bike not jack with shifting gears. CVT is always in the right gear. I’ve yet to “blow up a belt” on my Polaris 850 & it’s got over 5,000 miles on it. No doubt Honda makes a decent machine but CanAm & Polaris dominate the ATV & SxS market.

CVT is better for ripping down semi-flat trails, but these foot shift foremans climb/descend steep grades like a damn billy goat.

Honda has essentially owned the "built bulletproof" tough ATV segment for a long time now, but one ATV in this segment of the market that I think might truly be the most overlooked on the market is the Suzuki Kingquad 400. In around about way, Suzuki has literally made that bike almost exactly the same since 2002. 2002-2008 it was known as the eiger, 2008 it became part of the kingquad family where the plastics/esthetics were changed, 2011 they fuel injected them, but from 2002-current, that ATVs chassis, axles, drivetrain, engine, suspension & transmission options have literally not been touched, that is 22 years of making the exact same product, 22 years of refinement from the people who invented the ATV- there is NO atv on the market that can say that except for that 1. I had a 2004.5 sportsman 400, great bike, had a few odd electrical issues and absolutely hated how the CVT felt, sold it & am currently awaiting the 2024 KQ400s to arrive in Canada to purchase one of those instead. Its neat that they are available in both footshift & CVT transmissions, unlike the Honda, the Kingquad 400 actually uses a transmission similar to a tractor, in which you have 5 forward gears, but you also have high & low gear ranges, effectively giving you 10 speeds. Would really like to see you get your hands on a kingquad 400 for review, and as much as the rancher 420 would be a better comparison, I think if you could make some comparisons between the 520 & KQ400s, would also be cool. Great video man!

Your are absolutely right the Suzuki 400’s get overlook and I’m guilty of that as much as anyone! I’ve had several of them( older eiger’s) in the shop for maintenance and they are like Honda’s in that they are hard to kill! Some of my friends have newer King quads, both a 500 and 750, and they seem like great machines. I’ll have to borrow them for some seat time and reviewing this year.

I love my 2015 Honda pioneer 500 but sadly its for sale. 38 mph downhill with a tale wind doesnt cut it. Other than that its perfect trail machine. With that being said, I currently ride a 2008 Polaris sportsman 500 EFI. Side note: did you hear Honda just filed for another patent for an ATV. Its designator is TRX700, possibly a foreman/rubicon with a new motor. Source-Honda Pro Kevin here on youtube. Other guys have went to their local Honda dealer to fact check and it is true but no details yet.

I’ve herd those rumors to and it’s got to be an updated Rincon. I just HOPE they don’t stick with the 3 speed Torq converter transmission. Stick the dual clutch in there and it will be golden!

The problem with the Japanese brands, they rarely do something new, but they gladly keep the prices up for machines that have stood still in time. The Honda pod, it looks straight out of the 2000's, the looks, meh. And the power and top speed is mediocre at best. I had a 300 Kymco that was more peppy and went faster. And speed isn't everything, but the Honda has no speed lol And they don't even have plush suspension. So when you look at your money value, Honda is not it.
