I have this model & Union of South Africa the Hornby A4s set a great example in detail to a high end scale.

I got myself this model for Christmas and I'm extremely happy with it, she's fantastic. I have my own 4491 Commonwealth of Australia as well, renumbered and repainted from 4484 Falcon. Bittern blows my other 3 A4s well and truly out of the water in terms of detailing and model quality, although my older tender driven A4s have better pulling power. Fantastic video mate, hope you're safe from the fires.

Forgot to add, I'm a massive LNER fan as well. Nothing beats Gresley's machines in elegance, power, or performance. Got a decent amount of his locos in model form and I won't stop until I have at least one member for each of his designs.

Such a lovely model I want to get one but I’m going to a model railway exhibition in York in Easter to see if there’s one there. I’m not sure if bittern will be unstreamline after her overhaul ??
@fp70265 жыл бұрын
Huh? There has never been an unstreamlined A4...

Well there was a time when, I think it was Mallard, moved around without the streamlined casing.

@Theengineshed How do you take the tender off mate?
@theengineshed3594 жыл бұрын
The B tender is just an old horny tooling with a larger tension lock coupling bar. The A tender is a standard Hornby set up permanently coupled to the loco via the drawbar and screw and the 4 pin plug. I hope this answers your question. Cheers... Ben.

@@theengineshed359 I'm just very interested as I am currently trying to decide between building a steel garage for a layout or a smaller granny flat type wooden workshop from aarons outdoor

Hey mate I got one as well and the accessories were not fitted or the silver weights on the bottom.
@theengineshed3595 жыл бұрын
Interesting, possibly mine was display piece at one point the silver weights are actually just bits of foam the camera had trouble with the focusing against the white packaging, so they appear silver for some reason... Thanks for your comment. Cheers... Ben

You missed a perfect opportunity to refer to the two tenders in the DCC name and call it "Twice Bittern"! I'll get my coat...

But why no skirts. Bittern was in perfect LNE condition during the period of the 'Gathering'. The removal of skirts but keeping LNE livery is just wrong. No skirts = BR livery as 60019...
@treinenliefde4 жыл бұрын
LNER livery without skirts is actually kinda accurate I think. I believe (though I cant be certain) that after the second world war some locomotives were repainted back to blue but without the skirts.

I own two of both hornby's class A3 and A4 models and I'm really not entirely happy with their modern productions of them. This model specifically is what set me off in anger of the sheer inaccuracies and lazy production that go into these models. The major issue I have with this loco is the massive amount of detail lacking on the model, even though Hornby have access to the real loco they still couldn't be bothered to include relevant accessories specific to Bittern in her current condition. The first example being the cylinder draincocks, not only are they not painted anymore but they're straight up the wrong shape, second, Hornby have failed to include any sort of guard irons or proper valve spindles. Hornby have also failed to include the relevant vacuum hoses that Bittern herself has in current day condition as mainline certified. Not to mention the barrage of quality issues I've had with all my Hornby Pacifics, the price of this pack specifically makes no sense to me and I genuinely feel ripped off given the sheer laziness of production going on here. Hornby have a unique position here as they are the only ones making models of A4s/A3s in a relative decent looking quality, even though most of them are flat out inaccurate due to hornby's laziness in not giving their locomotives proper detail and only giving a toy like bare minimum in order to call them models.
