That’s a great shot head on down the straight at speed. I have a couple of Railroad pacifics, and a 1996 Mallard. The body tooling is definitely the later loco drive one with the old tender as you said. I think the tender chassis is an odd mix of old and new, but the wheels are a huge improvement. The P class is the odd one out by the way.

Still a great mdel there Sam, I can understand why you love her so. As for Mallards liveries, she carried several over the years. Firstly as you mentioned the garter blue, then in 1942 she was painted war time plain black. in 1944 she was repainted black but with a different typeface for the 'NE' on the tender and her running number. (this was the time of the last LNER renumbering when she was changed from 4468 to 22). Then in 1947 she returned to garter blue (the only A4 to do so, all the others were painted apple green), but with her number (22) in cast aluminium on the cabside. In 1949 she was painted in an experimental version of the BR express passenger blue, a darker shade than the normal BR, almost like the old Great Easten prussian blue with black and cream lining, and then in 1952 into Brunswick green until 1963 when she was with drawn and returned to her original garter blue livery. Keep up the good wrk Jon

The past two years I got into it again when I upgraded to digital with an 0-6-0T, didn't know what I was doing and have over-oiler her and banged her around like with your A4, but she runs well now except over points where she'll stop if going too slow. Only differences, (Excluding livery), is that yours is DCC Fitted and mine are DCC Ready. Even my two Spencer's being DCC Ready, both run on DC as I don't do Digital, they both run very well, with no wheel slip, whatever I give them to pull.

It would've been cool for you to tell a whole story on how you got into the model trains hobby. I've seen you told the story of your very first locomotives and train sets and they were fantastic and it made you go into the hobby. That A4 Mallard sure brings you memories back in late 2012. Also the shape of the BR A4s and LNER A4s look a bit different. The BR A4 seems a little bigger than the LNER A4 and the wheels seem more exposed on the BR version.

I'm quite impressed with railroad models myself having just acquired Tornado special limited edition, the extra detail on it when compared to the standard railroad version is clear to see but it's still classed as a railroad model and cost me just £89 so not a bad price either. It only has the 3 pole motor and no tender pickups but runs nice and smooth with the added flywheel to help it over dead spots

Wow I can't believe that this is your very first locomotive before you got into the model train hobby. :O But yeah I know many people are gonna say "OH MALLARD IS BLUE NOT GREEN THAT IS INCORRECT." Not to mention the LNER A4 and the BR A4 are shaped quite differently.

Amazing locomotives, other than the Mallard, the A4 Bittern is the only other member of the class to be named after a bird, also your previous video title the cheapest train set ever? reminded me of one i saw in Smyths called the Black Canyon Express Train set, i'm not sure what sort of american locomotive it's based on, but probably the Pere Marquette 1225.
@davidknowles24916 жыл бұрын
You forgot No 4466 "Herring Gull" ;)
@andrewjames11906 жыл бұрын
erm that's not quite right. the entire class were named after birds except the first four. but out of the remaining six bittern and mallard are still named after birds though three of them were renamed after famous people from original bird names. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LNER_Class_A4.

I decided to start doing puzzles. I started a 500 piece puzzle of a hunslet austerity driving through a forest. I spent 10 hours on it then threw it at the wall

@Sam'sTrains if only they would restore 4489 Dominion of Canada and retrofit it with knuckle couplers to have it do mainline railtours here in Canada. Sigh. At least theres a couple hornby models of D.O.C., right?

Quick question, when doing the slow speed test, I noticed another linkage rod connecting to the coupling rod on the third driving wheel closest to the cab, now to me it looks like a second valve gear, I’ve seen it on locomotives before, but only on A4s, is that the valve gear for the third cylinder, a generator, or is it something else entirely
@SamsTrains6 жыл бұрын
Hey Patton - I did know what that was, but I'm not too sure now - it might be a mechanical lubricator, or maybe a way of measuring speed? I'll have to look that up again! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

You need to review both the British Rail Class 66 and the BR 80 Tank engine. Along with 34007 Wadebridge the West Country 4-6-2 Tender engine. These are my favourite engines of all time by the way, other than the Planet No. 9 engine thats my true favourite. Also, we need to see which of your engines can pull the most cars, with or without traction wheels. I also love this channel never stop doing this this is the best we need more thomas story videos This is really long so imma stop bye -Sagaris

Hey! I've reviewed several Class 66s and West country locos in various liveries/names already! Thanks for your other tips - I'll look into doing those! :D Thanks so much for your kind words, Sam :)
@MisterHampshire6 жыл бұрын
Genuine question - and it doesn't just apply to you, Sam - but what is the interest if the buffers are sprung or not? Since they never actually take up any pressure from any source, what difference does it make if they are merely fixed?
@MisterHampshire6 жыл бұрын
@@MDHGames Yeah I appreciate what they're for on the real thing, but since they don't and never will take up any pressure in model form, why go to the cost of making them sprung? What I'm saying is, there just doesn't seem to be any point in them when - say, for this example - they could have glazed the loco windows instead.
@SamsTrains6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is a matter of realism, but it's also a good indication of the quality of a model - it's a good quick way to check whether no expense has been spared! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Hi Sam, very nice loco and review, A4's are one of my all time favourite locomotives, I think I have about 6 of them, may be more. My best A4 is the Black Label from Dapol, does have some manufacturing issues but does run well if you know how to get around them...Simon
@SamsTrains6 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Simon - haha you're about as bad as me when it comes to A4s then! Ooh yeah fantastic - glad you were able to sort the issues with her in the end! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Hey Sam could you do a video based off of servicing a mallard like that one. Mine doesn’t work to well it’s very hit or miss. It’s dcc equipped and gets in electricity from its tender and engine. I don’t know what is going but if you could do a videophile that I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
