The mental game for Alcaraz was key. He embraced the path to victory, and not only focus on the final target. That's is the way to achieve big things and dont add pressure to yourself. He said the day before the final, it is going to be the best day of my life, despite result.

I listened to a podcast last summer with legendary tennis coach Rick Macci (discovered and coached the Williams sisters). This was after he won Madrid, before he won the U.S. Open. He said something along the lines of "As long as Alcaraz doesn't have major injuries, he will be the best tennis player of all time". He also made the Federer/Nadal/Djokovic comparison at the time, but said his game most resembled Federer, but he moved like Nadal and could stretch like Djokovic. 100% spot on. What an eye for talent that guy has.

This is very wrong statement and childish even if the guy is experienced. It is enthusiasm. The truth is that it is all relative and every goat is judged by the contemporary era elements of the game. There is no aingle goat because it would require same conditions to compare. As Agassi has said: “every era goat player add new elements to the game”. Agassi added some and then they became part of new gen training, Sampras added some, Borg Mc Enroe Becker added some, Fed, Nadal, Djok added some and Alcaraz adds some new elements to the game. The new elements are part of the era goat and then they become part of the aport and training of the kids watching. Then a new person will take the body of sport and add some new elements with the conditions of the time, the gameplay time elements (how long sets and fames wil last), the pace, the courts, the racquets and balls, the body training and recovery technologies therapies and supplements of the time, the strategy discoveries etc

And in a way, it has already happened , as Carlos has replaced Rafa, winning two majors since Rafa has essentially been sidelined due to injury. But Alcaraz' incredible victory at Wimbledon does not mean that Novak is done. I think Djokovic has at least another year, perhaps 2 years, of peak form. In that time, his chances of beating Carlos at 50/50. I am hoping for more meetings between those two. Of course, I could easily be proven wrong, and Carlos could well win the US Open and the Australian Open, in which case, Novak could be done. Only time can tell. It was a match for the history books. I think the 2nd set tie break was not decisive in Djokovic loss. Djokovic was ready to problem solve for 5 sets. The decisive moment is when everyone felt the momentum was with Djokovic in the 5th set and yet he missed a forehand volley to lead 2-0 and serve potentially for 3-0. He should have just let the ball bounce and then fire a strong forehand down the line. That kept Alcaraz alive in the 5th set who produced unbelievable winners

What Djokovic continues to do is incredible, reaching 3 GS finals at 36 years old and winning 2 GS is impressive. People that says that is just a Djokovic hater or a tennis casual. He still have gas on the tank. The GOAT’s Era isn’t finished yet. He will come stronger for the next 2 GS, specially with Alcaraz being favourite and having the pressure. Also it must be considered that if there’s a change of guard in the future (probably if Djokovic doesn’t win AO24) is not the typical one like was the Connors and Borg with McEnroe and Lendl (between 3 to 7 years apart), Lendl-Wilander (5 years apart), Wilander-Becker (3 years apart), Becker-Sampras (4 years apart), Sampras-Federer (10 years apart), Federer-Nadal (5 years apart), Nadal-Djokovic (11 months apart). DJOKOVIC-ALCARAZ ARE 16 YEARS APART! It's abysmal. So kudos to Djokovic that is still battling against a young promise future guard way more younger than the old guard ever before. Although Djokovic is in the final part of his career, he will continue to compete this year and the next year, being together with Alcaraz, the top 2 on the circuit. Whatever Djokovic does from now on will only further enhance his legacy. Undisputed GOAT.

I was glad Alcaraz won, he really proved himself there. I know there were some people that were critical of his U.S. Open win because Djokovic wasn’t able to play. This win proves them wrong. Does this signify changing of the guard? Probably not. So far only Thiem (2019 French pity he’s struggling), Medvedev (2021 US Open) Nadal (French Open ), and Alcaraz. Are the only ones to beat Djokovic in a Slam within the last 4 years. It will be interesting to see Holger Rune face off against Djokovic at a Slam.

I picked Carlos in a poll the night before because 1) I'd seen him play at Indian Wells in 2022 and nothing he's done since has surprised me and 2) I thought he'd be playing with nothing (or little) to lose. It's going to be interesting to see how things play out for Alcaraz now. He's already in the Hall of Fame at 20 (with 2 slams, almost 30 weeks at #1 and counting, 4 Masters), so there should be a lot of gravy ahead for him. Hope Rafa can come back next year, but no one's going to have an easy time with Carlos surging.

Biggest factor in this match was the wind. One player adapted well, the other's 1st serve placement apart from the 1st set was quite a bit off.....the added pressure of less free points for Djokovic and Alcaraz playing well is a constant loop that just produced this outcome. That long game even helped Alcaraz start reading Nole's serve better. Too bad Djokovic could not adapt and be more aggressive. The better player won on the day, but still took a monumental effort to defeat Djoker.

Novak hits that backhand 10 centimeters higher at 6-5 in the second set tie break, and it is lights out! Even Carlos admitted as much. Those two will be evenly matched. I think Novak has learned more about Carlos than Carlos has learned about Novak, so I think Novak will have more success against Carlos in the future. @@Nazhuk I disagree. I think it is the other way around. Carlos had years to study Novak, and he received advice from multiple sources on how to beat Novak, while Novak had only his experience with Carlos to go on. I feel that if they meet again, Novak will have the upper hand. And if Carlos does not fear Novak, he is a moron. Novak was one missed backhand away from beating him in straight sets. Everybody fears Novak. And Novak definitely fears Carlos. Carlos is an incredible talent that commands respect too. Respecting your opponent is the first step in beating them. Anyway, we will know soon enough. The next 6-12 months will be fascinating. I think those two will play each other many times in the coming 24 months, and they will both win matches. Novak has never had a good overhead/smash. i remember arguing with my darling Slav community members and being told overheads don't matter, and here we are. Carlos's smash is absolutely sublime! Not quite Pistol Pete, but hot damn. Playing in the wind SHOULD have favored the 20-year veteran and 7 time winner, not the young buck with fewer than 20 matches on grass in his lifetime; this is a bit of an excuse, Matt. Federer is not allowed excuses, so keep that same energy for Novak. Novak losing isn't terribly sad because he's the most successful tennis player of all time, and we have 20 years of Carlos to look forward to. Why should Carlos have to put his life/career on hold, waiting for Novak to turn 40? It's his time now, and we need to see a handing over of the baton, the way it was done with Sampras, Agassi, Becker, and Federer. Circle of life. There needs to be a big celebration for Novak when he decides to hang it up, but he's still the most consistent player on tour IMO, so the death knell is premature (as you rightly said).
