@@jalexb503 That's why I said it depends. When I was young my credit was shit due to a family member taking out cards in my name without me knowing. When I was a little older and wanted to start repairing that damage, the only thing a person with bad credit can get is high interest credit cards or high interest loans. I took out both and paid ahead to avoid interest because I had cash in hand to buy the things I wanted, but not the credit. It was worth it to me since there was no risk, I was basically buying my way out of having shit credit. Unfortunately that's what a lot of people in poverty in their early years end up having to do.

I don't think knowing how to cook is enough honestly. I knew how to cook since I was 13 but when officially out on my own I was spending waaaaay too much time and money just on food. I had to figure out how to consolidate ingredients and to "cheat" in the kitchen just to not spend 3 hours in there. Sure it might taste a little better from scratch but from scratch takes up too much time, dirties too many dishes and sometimes costs even more than cheating the recipe a bit. I had to learn what is and isn't worth making at home, i.e. bread I make because fresh out the oven is awesome and it's much cheaper to make than buy. Pie crust? Over my dead body will I make pie crust ever again, premaid is cheap and homemade was a nightmare (no matter how much flour I added it would stick to EVERYTHING)

What I do with college aged children: I will help you while you're in school with things like groceries, auto insurance, and cell phones. You are expected to have a job, an emergency savings account, a budget, a path to establishing credit. If you want fun money you earn it. If you screw up, you pay your way out. We also talk regularly about money, and go over concepts like investing, insurance, etc. So far so good. No one has appeared on this channel haha.
@drea409
@drea409 4 ай бұрын
I haven't finished the episode but I'm wondering if it's a bit more nuanced than that I got into an argument on KZbin not too long ago, I Claimed an allowance had really helped me get an early start on figuring out my finances and I've carried that into adulthood, whereas my fiance was taught to ask his parents for things like toothpaste and video games and they'd get them if they could. Most people were adamant and an allowance / giving your kids money was terrible, the kid had to get a job and earn fun money themselves I'm wondering now if we had slightly different ideas about these concepts. Maybe they interpreted an allowance the way this lady gets her money, her dad takes care of a lot of things even as she's grown, from bills to some fun money on online purchases. I didn't mean that at all, and I 100% agree that paying for anything and everything your kid wants you to pay for is a terrible idea. On the other hand, if she was given an allowance (yes, possibly even at her age even though she's not a kid anymore) would help her see where her money is going and how much of it is going there, and it might potentially help her start budgeting

Yeah these people take bits of financial advice they’ve heard, like the fact that you “should have a savings”, out of context with little understanding of the principles behind it all. I’m guilty of this myself - currently paying off a high interest card and I still have to remind myself now nonsensical it is to let interest charges bleed me. For so long I rationalized interest as a fee I was willing to pay to “get through life” i.e. live above my means to soothe myself going thru a serious & difficult time. Very backwards mindset bc it only leaves you worse off

As a 25 year old who is an absolute wreck and struggling in life, especially from a mental health stand point, I NEEDED to hear this episode. I moved back home in February of 2020 and quit all my jobs to help my mom, who died in April of 2020. After going through an extremely severe depressive episode, getting addicted to amphetamines, being in a toxic relationship with an extremely wealthy man who made me feel like shit… and then at the same time allowing my dad to pay for so much of my expenses because of his guilt about how he treated me, I’m ending my relationship, and making an exit strategy to being self-sufficient and finishing school. I have 49,000 in student loans and 3,000 in credit card debt. It’s not going to be easy, but im going to focus on healing, getting my career together, and stop blaming others for where I’m at in life. This episode seriously gave me a wake up call. Having been around the block quite a few times, this girl is a very common nuanced sub genre. I’m not trying to be mean, but it’s the plain jane who is spoiled by her dad meme. It’s her way of making up for the lack of doting male attention that more attractive girls get. The aloof attitude, dismissiveness of the generosity, and eagerness to detail the ways in which they are gifted money, presents, or assistance is a common trait. The sad thing is the often take out their anger/sadness from rejection or failed relationships on their fathers (who genuinely have the best of intentions) in a sort of fin dom humiliation that they don’t deserve.

My hair won’t stop sticking up watching this. People like her are so common even around my friends. Honestly, I probably know only a small handful of people that’s anywhere close to basic financial literacy. Know how much you spend a month/year, positive cash flow, not having bad debts, and having investment plan for retirement. Being frugal when you are young, start building credit, and having an investment plan is so crucial. The more time you waste, it really compounds negatively for your financial freedom down the road.

I call her the "starter girl" model. Not pretty enough to get checked by guys and not ugly enough to have a personality. Her dad is her father Comstock and she has an IV connected directly to his heart. He wants to cut her off but her arguing would literally give him a stroke. Her favorite musician is Lana del ray and she self medicates her "depression" with weed. Maybe not weed but drinking her teeth are too nice.

I think the credit card companies have convinced the population that "cash back" on purchases is good. Only a small percentage of people actually enjoy that perk without paying more in fees and interest than they actually get in "cash back". Keep up the great work Caleb!

I made a rule for myself where I will only have one credit card and that has a 5% cash back on food and grocery stores. The second I make a purchase I send a payment of that amount from my checkings to my credit card. This way I actively see the cash back coming and I have zero interest as I never owe anything on my card.

Genuinely this is a similar thought process that I had for a while when I was still figuring out finances. She sounds crazy for shrugging things off so easily on a show about finances, but this is genuinely the thought process that a lot of young people who haven’t figured out their finances have until they really need to figure it out. Good on her for being completely honest about her thoughts because personally I don’t know if I’d be able to admit everything she has said here.

@@TheBullyDiscipleIt’s true that an awkward laugh *can* be a defense mechanism. It can also just be that they don’t take their situation seriously and are laughing at you for taking it more seriously than them. This girl comes across as smug, not nervous enough to be forced into awkward laughter. Sorry but if Caleb uses that excuse with this girl he’s just wrong. She’s even adding a drawl to her voice, she’s confident sitting there, she’s not on the defensive even when he’s coming after her - as far as she’s concerned, everything is fine and daddy will take care of it.

I'm currently working in an entry level accounting position and currently back in school to become a CPA (cash flowing this degree myself, avoiding loans at all costs). I can't be too hard on myself because i have always been financially responsible, I just wish I would have pursued a more lucrative degree so I could have better earning potential. just glad that I'm doing this now and not spending the rest of my working life getting by on $35,000k a year. My dad had money but refused to help me, never loaned me a dime. My mother was a drug addict who sold our home out from under us then used the money on drugs so we were homeless. Shocker, I was never taught about the importance of making good financial choices, nor the lasting impact it has on your life many many years afterwards. This also will impact your future children, if you have any. I'm 40 years old this July, and let me tell you, it's hard to never have anything, to work your butt off to get your check that's literally already gone before you even get paid. I would of given anything to have someone, like Caleb, sit me down and tell me what he's telling all of you, 20 years ago because I know my life and my children's lives would be drastically different today. I will never have a retirement, I will work for the rest of my lifetime. I hope these kids and their furniture children will never have to experience the pain of poverty.
