My parents stole money I saved up too. They kept trying to claim me on taxes for years after I left and was cut off completely. The IRS audited them and they get upset and bring it up all the time. My mom sued my dad for higher child support when she saw he married a someone else and had a different job. I just… my childhood suffered because of the financial illiteracy of the adults raising me. My folks were the type to say “we’ll take you to a job if ya get one!” And then when i got one they wouldn’t even take me to the interview. This stuff is so common, young adults trying to emerge from the shadows of their parents financial sins.

@Jake38nine Spanking done properly, out of love and not in anger is a very effective training tool for kids. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean that all of us who grew up with spankings as part of our training are mindless drones who only repeat what mom & dad told us. 😂 Almost everyone I know who was raised like me is well adjusted, hard working, and productive members of society. A FAR greater average of people raised like me are well adjusted and a positive part of society than the kids raised with this current culture of narcissism, entitlement, & laziness. The proof is in the pudding.
@icantthinkofascreenname3064
@icantthinkofascreenname3064 Жыл бұрын
@Jake38nine And it’s interesting that you associate a weak natured inability to call out wrongs with spanking, you seem to think that it leads to a defeated, mindless attachment to authority. A lot of people have a blindness when it comes to family that allows them to be taken advantage of, it has nothing to do whether or not they were spanked. You have an interesting, albeit limited, view of human nature.

The mom situation is so difficult to navigate. Unfortunately, parents with narcissistic traits & poor money management can always take advantage of their children without any repercussions. As someone who has also dealt with this problem, the only solution is to be completely separated financially from the parents. Move out, file independent for taxes, and possibly change your SSN. If a parent is willing to put their teenager at a financial disadvantage, they will never have the capacity to feel remorse or indebted.

If my mom stole $3000 from me I think that would wind up leading to no contact unless it was paid back immediately. Hopefully she doesn't reveal to them that she's getting her finances in order because her mom will just wind up trying to leech more money off of her. Holding her moving back in over her head after stealing the money from her is incredibly toxic and terrible from a mother. Get her out of your life as it will lead to a lot less stress.

That's true. Parents need to understand that their relationship isn't some kind of legal contract. Once you're 18, they need to respect you and treat you like a decent human would. The entitlement of some parents today boggles my mind. They think they can mistreat you and act however they want, and you have to love them "just because they're your mom". Unfortunately, society pressures us to always be there for them, but you don't have to be. If they knew that, maybe it would change how they treat you.

Girl if you can please God please see this comment. I want you to understand something that's super hard to grasp. I was in a similar position you are. I lived with my mother (father not in the picture) and she was financially abusive. If your mother does this constantly, yes you can leave them. It's so hard but you need to cut ties. I could get deeper into this but know that the light at the end of the tunnel IS THERE after the pain of cutting ties. Do not hold on to a rope that's hurting you more than helping either of you. My mother gave me no freedom. She would also be mad that money was in my bank account and not in there at the same time. She would constantly make me show her my account to "prove I'm broke as her" and God when I got my scholarship money. She basically took it, she refused to feed any of us including my little brothers who were 12 and 10 at the time. I had to pay 800 a month as "rent" by the time I left. And she wanted more. I even paid her phone bill after I left bc of guilty traps she would do. I'm now not talking to her and she's so sad that she's missing out of hanging out with her grandchildren. They deserve better. It is a parents job to take care and pay for their kids. The kids didn't ask to be born. It was the parents decision to have kids so the least parents could do is take care of their kids and pay for their kids until grown (18 yr old). The fact that your mom holds basic care over your head indicates to me that she's not a good mom. If she still has to take care of you as an adult then it's a different story, but you were a child, under 18, under her care, so for her to hold that over you is gross.

Caleb throwing the boyfriends bank account under the bus though :D Edit: Baby Step 1 is to save $1000 and a lot of people think this is there emergency fund but it is really just training you to save and budget.

I had a similar situation with my aunt that she's having with her mother. It's disgusting that her mother did what she did and there's no excuse for that behaviour, those sort of people that take advantage of people like that are on my avoid at all cost list. I hope she was able to get the money back and she's in a better spot.

Saying that her parents could pay her $500 for 6 months to give here $3k really put into perspective how much money that is. Idk why, but it’s just way easier to conceptualize when broken down like that.

Every time you see your parents, ask them for $50. Then after 60 visits, you've got your $3000 back. If they fuss, just ask them to give you whatever cash they have in their wallet. Tell them that you need the money for gas to keep coming to see them because gas is so expensive. If you see your parents once a week, that will only take you just over a year.

She seems so smart and confident. She hasn't made any major stupid financial mistakes yet. The car is a minor ding, especially with the APR and down payment. The main thing I see is she's making way way below what she's capable of. If I were her I would be aggressively figuring out how to increase that income. If she increased by 50-100% while she gets the car paid off she'll be set to move out to her own place and she'll be killing it!

So nice to see someone being smart and motivated. Especially a woman. Women need to be financially stable enough to never be in a position where they depend on someone else. I think the $500 she was referring to is the frequently referenced amount of money “most” people do not have/ more than saved up.

I definitely feel her when it comes to the bad/toxic family dynamic. I still live with my parents and pay all of their bills and my mom still expects me to "gift her some money just because" after everyone of my paychecks, and since I did it a few times at first out of gratitude, she has started a habit of asking me for a "gift" every other Friday knowing I got paid. It's definitely toxic but in my culture I'm my parents retirement plan so I definitely feel like I got manipulated into a bad situation with where I'm at now.

In my culture I’m my parents financial plan too but they already have their own savings , investments and plan aside from me as everyone should do, the kids are just to ensure they are comfortable and not in a nursing home. I would happily be gifting or spending it on my parents but them expecting and asking is not cool :/ maybe you can help them set up some financial system and work in what you’d like to share on them Easier said than done of course , but this way you can plan for your own future and family freely ❤

If you already pay all the bills, just write whatever bill you paid and the amount on a piece of paper, stick a pretty bow on it and give it to her as her present. A gift isn't a gift if it's demanded, it's extortion.
@weird-guy

If pay the bill, say to them that’s your form of rent and that you will give any more money, if they agree ok if not save to move out, if you don’t set boundaries now you will be f*cked for the rest of your life, I’m talking from experience. Good luck

I was in a bit of a similar situation. I borrowed a large amount of money to my dad when I was young because he was under threat of losing his house. I've sat down and talked to him multiple times about getting a payment plan going and he might stick to it for a little bit and then just stop again. He'll find some kind of justification on why he can't or why he shouldn't have to pay it back. Eventually I just decided to give up because it's not worth the stress and effort of always pushing for it. It sucks but I just consider that money gone and I've learned my lesson never to borrow to family again.

Regarding the $1000 emergency fund, Dave Ramsay does (or did) recommend that as a starter fund for people up to their eyeballs in debt and needing to stop digging their hole. Then focus on the debts, then build up to a full 3 to 6 months. I haven't listened to him in years, though. He's fine in small doses, but he's from a different generation and sometimes sounds like a lecturing parent.

Hey Caleb…..do these and other folks A HUGE FAVOR. Please put together a video on what you need to know about getting paid, benefits, etc when you are considering accepting a job offer…I would gear it for people just out of High School or college. I remember being so thrilled to get a coveted job when I was young and thinking nothing of being paid as an independent contractor and really got myself in trouble with the IRS later on. I took care of it (I had bought Disney stock as a kid so I sold it and didn’t need to ask my parents for money) … I’m financially set now (I’m 62)….but so many clueless kids/20somethings on your show. I love what you do! Please consider creating that kind of helpful video or series…. Not as an advisor just a guy who’s learned and seen a thing or two.
