[230k+] World Record on 8/8/21 LA Mini Motorways Daily Challenge (sheeeeeesh)

Started the game at about 9am, realized after about 8k that it could potentially be a perfect configuration of the city!! Only paused once to go for a bike ride midday. I started recording once I realized it could go on for a while so I'll have a video uploaded to my KZbin soon if you want to actually watch it's growth + a lil commentary.
I'm not really a fan of spawn blocking, just got really lucky with the house placements and optimizing traffic flow. The only extra roads I added were at the entrances of malls so I would be able to reroute them later if needed. I added some more decorative roads for fun but ultimately deleted them so the layout would be more clear when I ended it.
Not sure how long it could have potentially gone on--I disconnected the green destination on the right to end it once I was sure I was happy with my score. I think easily a million if I was patient enough. In order to keep it going in time for the daily challenge I started setting timers for 1 minute 10 seconds so I knew how long I could be away from my computer before I needed to select roads for it to continue at the end of the week. I used that method to make lunch around 150k without slowing growth.

Heyo! The commentary for this video actually only takes up the first 5 minutes, but I thought it would be fun to include every thing I recorded for anybody who was interested in how the score actually goes from 20,000 to 230,000. The traffic simulation and demand from the destinations is actually really interesting to watch and see how (somehow) the supply and demand is consistently met. I included some of the commentary transcribed in the description but am happy to answer any other questions here.

Not nearly this high...yet. I had to be at my computer all day to get the score! Honestly past 8k it becomes more of a waiting game. I'm gonna have time over the next couple days to play some more so I'll do my best ;D

I was wondering...why do you not connect some of the houses to the roads? There's quite a few actually. Is it a strategy or did you not just see them pop up? You should do a series of strategy videos for those who are not as good as you are (obviously there's alot of us who don't get over 200,000). I'd really like to know, and many others as well, what goes through your head as "this"'or "that" happens in the game. I can only get a quarter of your score on most maps, so I'm still a noob to the game.

If I'm being honest, a lot of what goes into a high score is lucky house placement! I read some interviews and posts and I'm pretty sure the devs don't intend for people to get much higher than 8k on a good run so whenever somebody goes above that it's the exception not the rule (which sounds dumb but honestly is why I haven't uploaded another 200k+ video yet). As for not connecting some houses, it's a little of both. Mostly it's just that destinations only require so many houses to be satisfied. This demand increases but doesn't vary wildly besides occasional rushes. If you connect enough houses to meet that demand you don't need to add more. Additionally, unneeded houses can slow the flow of traffic (if their driveway isn't placed correctly). Most of the time I won't connect a house because the only roads around it are for other colors and I don't want to cross-contaminate the color traffic. But also, in late game I definitely do struggle with seeing where all the houses are popping up because so much is happening on the screen! BUT in the latest patch they just changed how houses/3-way intersections are calculated into the speed of cars so a lot of the design rules I used to have in mind (and everybody else) for making cities is broken. Previously I would always route houses the shortest route and work on diagonal angles and flow but it's looking like the new meta may be grouping housing intersections before sending them on a main road which feels really weird? This is definitely more than you asked for, but I enjoyed watching this video on their thought process behind designing the game. Not that it gives any crazy secrets or anything but it's cool to see and helped me personally for thinking about how I play: kzbin.info/www/bejne/maPbfKmJeJ6Wesk. Yes, I'm overthinking a fun game but that's what I do haha.

You don't need to put a road between shopping centers to spawn-block because nothing can spawn close up to the shopping center. Unless you have the "random spawn" modifier

good point! I don't normally try to block between centers more-so the roads immediately around the entrances from things getting too close but also it's not something I think super hard about it's just fun drawing extra roads haha
