Awesome video, thank you so much for making this video, and also for keeping this nice vehicle alive! When I was a little kid, I grew up with a Trooper. It was my mums family, equipment and horse trailer hauler! I miss it a lot, and my dream is to one day buy one, restore it and paint it the way hers looked and give it to her. She misses her Isuzu too.

My trooper has an Isuzu 2.6 with a 5 speed. I don’t know if the engine was rebuilt prior to being installed, but my guess is it was a good running engine that didn’t need a rebuild. That all happened prior to my ownership.

As the owner of a 1993 Trooper, and no mechanical skills, I admire what you have done. Hard to find repair shops to work on it and parts are very difficult if not impossible (need new brake booster. Bought two aftermarket ones and neither worked and one was faulty out of the box.) The salvage yards here do not even have a Trooper in stock. Barely passed smog, but since its life has been in the southwest, like you said...little to no rust. I just can't get rid of the thing. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for great memories! My white 91 Trooper is in long term storage, has about half the mileage of yours. Old trucks cool because of easy DIY repairs, no ODB2 codes, iron engine block, metal radiator. Beware 2.6 is interference engine, but timing belt not hard to change. Thanks for tips on valve clearance adjustment and emission controls struggle. Mine burning some oil, so I think at 30 years old it needs valve seals as most senior engines do. If your have gas tank fuel pump issue, you might consider cutting hole in rear cargo floor to access it, instead of having to remove skid plate and dropping the tank. Just make or get a floor hole cover, some You Tuber did that on his Trooper. There are no locking differential options for the Japanese rear axle but there are some Australia options for the part time front axle. Just don't go off road crazy and crash !

I bought an ‘86 new. There were two models, the base, and the LS. I bought a silver base model. The only option was the outside color. That’s how they could make them so affordable. They all had beige interior, and that year, they all had a carb 4 cyl. In ‘86 this was about the only vehicle that still didn’t have a computer. Everything was mechanical and as long as you had a timing light and tools, you could do anything to it. I was stationed in Colo Spgs and that was a great vehicle to have there. That little 4 cyl had a bunch of torque but it couldn’t get out of it’s own way. Going up some of the passes on the interstate, it wouldn’t go over 35 mph. I still loved that thing and wish I still had it.

I just bought and got going an 1986 trooper (called Jackaroo here in Australia) and I love it. Used to slow vehicles after driving a toyota1978 BJ40 for years, and later a 1986 model toyota. I had been eyeing off the troopers for a while, but the 1986 one is the best, looks good with the round headlights - carby, no fancy electronics or injection systems, you can still get some parts here in Australia (eg: I needed a new master cylinder). A great car to drive and seems competent for most 4WDing.

Inherited my friend’s Trooper when he passed away last year. Sent it to a mechanic to fix a gas line leak and to fix the stick shift so it worked properly. $2600 later and it’s still not fixed. They wanted another $1400 to MAYBE get it running right. So no way, had it towed to my home and here it sits. Would love to get it up and running but have zero experience in fixing anything. It did come with a chiltons Isuzu repair book. I am so overwhelmed at the sheer scope of things to learn, which would be basically everything.
@HighMileageReviews
@HighMileageReviews Жыл бұрын
Yes unfortunately owning a vehicle like this will likely require some mechanical knowledge and confidence to repair things yourself if you don't want to be at the mercy of a shop frequently. I know my way around a car pretty well and it still took me a year to learn the ins and outs of this thing so I could get it running right. But even now, since it's so old, random things will pop up out of the blue. Funny you mention the fuel lines, because mine just sprung a leak and had to replace them. They looked original, so i wasn't surprised. Nearly 40 year old rubber. Cheap and easy fix, but I was lucky I caught it in my driveway before getting stranded. Good luck with it! If it's too overwhelming, I'm sure someone out there will be happy to take it off your hands and fix her up

I still have my 90 trooper. I've had many 4x4 vehicles over the years, and I still consider my trooper the best 4x4 out of them all, hands down! Finding parts are almost impossible. @HighMileageReviews
@HighMileageReviews Жыл бұрын
@@TheGarageEngineer that's definitely a valid concern. So far, the hardest parts to find are obviously anything interior related. Trim, seats, electronics etc. Then there's the windshield. You can see a big crack in mine, but it's almost impossible to find one from a parts truck that isn't also broken. You can get most basic engine stuff new still, but there's some oddball parts that are rare or you can only get secondhand or refurbished. Idle air control valve, injectors, MAF, various emissions components are some that come to mind
@TheGarageEngineer
@TheGarageEngineer Жыл бұрын
@@HighMileageReviews thank you for the great reply. That helps. My plan is more usability day to day. So making my own interior is ok with me. Head gaskets tend to go at some point, but from what I've heard, they don't go catastrophically. It's more of a gradual failure. And the 5 speeds are supposedly pretty bullet proof. Overall they're quite reliable. I think 234,000 miles is proof of that.

What’s going on with the leaf spring shackle? Or do I even wanna know
@HighMileageReviews

Ha! Good question...I've been trying to figure that out myself. Something one of the previous owners fabbed up. Funny enough, the back left corner sits higher than the rest of the truck.

@@HighMileageReviews Haha because last December I bought a 1990 4 door trooper with the v6 out of Glendale. It needed some hard to find parts. I found his ad on Craigslist and drove out there from Tempe. Which was quite the drive, my trooper had a slipping clutch and a misfire above 55 mph😂 Anyway I remember he had 2 or 3 troopers he was parting out behind that mobile home park!

@@pointerstep small world! That's definitely the same guy. I spent about a half day out there gutting the interior out of one and pulling spare parts off of the others haha I left with a box full of rare replacement parts plus the interior. Really nice guy!

Why is the left rear leaf spring shackle longer?
@HighMileageReviews
@HighMileageReviews Жыл бұрын
I've wondered that myself. Something the previous owner did. It looks homemade. Someday I'll cut it shorter because it just looks odd the way it is and doesn't seem to have any function being that long

There are people on the planet Isuzu forum who can get more obscure stuff. Otherwise you gotta find a junked parts truck or sometimes eBay. RockAuto has many common items though

I noticed today a couple things... today was my first day driving! At initial idle, it's rough, like 500 rpm needs the gas occasionally feathered so it doesn't die rough.. gonna try pb blaster down the IAC hose and clean the MAF sensor as those are the 2 easiest things to attempt lol. Second... clutch feels squishy and has a real soft engagement. Idk. I don't think it's normal. Compared to my 02 wrangler, it feels terrible. Gonna check fluids tomorrow. Maybe bleed the system. Are you on the forums? What was your best resource when trouble shooting your trooper? I wanna get this thing running good and drive it until the wheels falls off haha such a neat old suv. I LOVE IT
@HighMileageReviews
@HighMileageReviews Жыл бұрын
@@geoffnelson64 I am on the forums. That's a great resource. Definitely my go-to for trouble shooting. I also have the Haynes manual which is pretty insightful. You seem to be on the right track regarding the idle. I have a video of how to replace the IAC if you end up going that route. I'd also check your valve clearances and timing. getting those in spec helped my idle greatly. And my clutch is light as a feather, so you'll definitely want to get your sorted. Definitely something off about it if it's mushy. Best of luck!
@geoffnelson64

@@HighMileageReviews when you say light as a feather you mean it takes zero effort to engage/disengage? That's exactly how mine is.. it doesn't slip. It's just very very soft. Something I'm not use to. Thanks for replying, whenever you get a chance. I appreciate being able to pick your brain
@HighMileageReviews
@HighMileageReviews Жыл бұрын
@@geoffnelson64 correct. It takes very little force to press the pedal, but the pedal travel is very smooth. Like at no point throughout the pedal travel does it get heavier or increases resistance. Whether or not that's completely normal, I can't say for sure, but I've driven one other trooper and the clutch felt very similar.
