Glad I found this. I've got a 54 pickup with a 57 235 that's stuck from sitting for decades. Going to try and get it running spending as little as possible. There are 1000 videos of guys telling me how to write a $3500 check at the machine shop, but not nearly enough of this. Thank you for posting. You are an inspiration.

amazing video! I'm working on a 235 from a 57 Chevy 3100 and it's been a pain. The engine is a little stuck and won't turn but the biggest problem was the bell housing and the flywheel coming out! glad to see there are options for a budget build for these old engines!

You should be lapping the valve seats with the corresponding valve that you took out and are gonna put back in. Especially on used vale’s that can be worn differently.

235 are very very good Motors I own several 235 what you need to do is get a 4-speed are they figure series truck like a 3800 series truck they have very very good Transmissions for hauling and it will make you truck go faster but you'll have to change out the bellhousing to adapt a 4-speed transmission any 3800 for Speed from a 54 to a 56 will work

Thanks! I used lots of brake clean with numerous razor blades for the gaskets, scrub brushes and shop towels. It took a very long time and is far from perfect!

Was the oil line that goes over the top of the rocker assembly press fit in that hole? I want to pull on it but I don’t want to break it.

I was able to pull it out of the head when I removed the rocker assembly from the head. If memory serves it didn't take much effort to remove it after that. Spray some penetrating oil on it and let it soak in for awhile then try again.

Did you first have this just on wood blocks on the ground when you pulled the head? Did you make the plate for the engine stand or did the bolts line up on the stock stand?

Yes, I just had it on wood when I pulled the head. I did not make a plate for the engine stand, I just got creative with the stand and made it work. Thanks for watching!

You totally ignored taking out the oil pump. I am trying to pull the cam in my 235 and you must remove the oil pump when removing the cam. Virtually everybody ignores this difficult task (when the engine is still in the car) I am having a difficult time getting it out.
