You're exactly right about the ugly wood being the best for heat. I started off hating it because you couldn't stack it but I've learned over the years to set it aside and put it on the top of my piles. Winter is also a great time to get your trees on the ground while the sap is out.

Hi Professor - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. I process wood from a Tree Servics Co and the majority of it is what you describe as nasties - there're normal to me! On a serious note, in the last couple of years I've started to seek out limb wood and burn it unsplit up to say 3 inches. It seems to burn real intense and even if it isn't pushing out more heat per cubic inch it certainly fools the brain into thinking it does as it looks so pretty thru the stove glass. Windy and wet here today - we had our annual allocation of snow over two days a couple of weeks ago!

Yes Rodders, everything burns! The sun will come out tomorrow! Maybe!

You got it in one Chris, I remember cutting a big scyamore tree that had multiple beaches coming out of it as in must have been topped 30-40 years previously, the butt was about 5 feet across and about 8foot long and gnarled and burred throughout. People thought I was mad to even bother with it but I persevered and got it down and ringed, then I split it down as small as I could, boy it was the king of ugly wood but it kept me in fires for almost 3-4 months as it refused to burn away fast like the pretty wood 👍

Great video Chris. I agree about the ugly wood and also set them aside in a odd ball rack and then grab a couple when I and having a fire going for a while. They truly do burn hotter and longer. Get a good hot fire going and get a hot good coal bed. I get a lot of tree service wood for a good friend of mine who has a wood boiler, free wood and I help him out get the wood and cut his 12-15 cords. Works out for us both. We just got done in the early fall with a maple tree that was darn near 48” at the base which reminded me of Kens wood log sizes, big and nasty but you get a lot of wood out of it. Have a great day and get back to work! Lol 😊👍🏻

Not sure but maybe 100-150 face cords left or so. But stuff I cut in the fall will be dry by mid-late summer, ash,maple,pine,basswood..... stuff that drys fast for campfire wood. No, I am very able to climb into my truck to get at the wood to unload.

We are also in the business, but much less volume than you. I am also a photographer, altho retired. I'd suggest changing the name of the uglies from "nasty" to a less yucky term. We sell them as fire pit wood, and I have said "they are like a blind date....ugly, but keep you warm".Also use the cookies for overnighters...the glowing face puts out a lot of heat! We don't sell truckloads, because we have developed very high prices here in the Gulf Coast suburban neighborhood. Don't know anyone that heats with wood only, so firewood is a treat. Just me and wife work it year round. Enjoy your vides, please keep it up!

I try to make the ugly wood a little prettier, and I think I do! Just using a single wedge, I can see where it needs to be split so the branch wood goes one way and the stem wood goes the other and it still gives me a nice full wedge piece. Even though you didn't have any examples I'm sure you know what I mean. And then as I'm cutting I also judge how far the branch inclusion is or how crooked it's going to split and if it looks overly gnarly, I'll make a 2 foot round instead for those wanting the bigger stuff. So generally the 2 ft. stuff is the best stuff but it tends to have more air in the stack due to gnarlyness, so it's probably a push.
@InTheWoodyard4 жыл бұрын

I burn all my crotches and such in my stove (free heat at my shop) and the bigger pieces I sell to wood boiler customers.
