Everything we see today seems lame by comparison with these guys. They were unique. Nobody sounded like them. They had no predecessors or successors. We won't see the likes of these guys ever, sadly. I don't know if kids coming up today can appreciate what music they created. They were only together for a short time. But in that time, they knocked the audiences out.

They had an original overall sound but had their influences: What were the influences that shaped the Doors' sound and what does each member of the band bring to the table? Densmore: Ray grew up in Chicago so he had the blues, Muddy Waters and all that. He also had classical training. That was pretty cool. That was invoked in the intro to "Light My Fire," which was very kind of Bach-like. Robby had a flamenco and folk music background. I was so enamored with watching Robby's fingers crawl across the flamenco guitar strings like a crab. I'm a jazz guy and Ray was also into jazz, so when we met we talked about [John] Coltrane and Miles [Davis]. I think that influence gave me freedom. Like in "When the Music's Over," I just stopped playing the beat, and I would just comment on Jim's words percussively, out of rhythm, like we were having a conversation. I got that from listening to Elvin Jones and John Coltrane. And then there was Jim, Mr. Literary, who had read every book on the planet, but didn't know anything about music and how to write songs and trusted us. Therefore, we were a total democracy. We shared everything-writing credits, veto power. Jim had melodies as well as words. He didn't know how to play a chord on any instrument, but he had melodies in his head. To remember the lyrics he would think of melodies and then they would stay in his head. He had melodies and lyrics in his head, and he would sing them a cappella, and we would eke out the arrangements. www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/legal-and-management/1563033/ray-manzarek-on-the-doors-musical-legacy-whiskey-a-go

***** I recommend reading the self biography from Ray Manzarek, if you're interested in the subject. I've read it in Finnish and the translation may have an effect, but I liked his originality and weirdness of his thinking/writing style, not to mention all the firsthand stories and insight about the doors. I knew their influences from reading that and had to google an interview instead of just giving my word for it and was lucky enough to find a good one in like 15 seconds :D

Why there are no comments about how sexy Jim Morrison was?! The way he moves, holds the microphone, singing with his eyes closed as if he's fucking the song, he's so connected to the music, is like watching some primal that was never witnessed before or after. He took his magic away to an early grave, there's no other preformer that can do what he could till this day. I'm not even talking about talent, nor musical quality, they(the band) lacked neither. But Jim was a magician, it's so entrancing to watch him lose himself like that. Sometimes I cannot believe he's dead.

+Soren Drahomiro We were waiting for you to say it for us! The Lizard King! - does anyone really need to state the obvious? Or are you encouraging us visitors to worship St. Jim at the shrine you've built for him? How very romantic you are - "he took his magic away to an early grave"! What he did was to kill himself with booze - predominantly booze. An extraordinary person with an extraordinary presence and voice. But he was a human being - fallible and vulnerable - like us all. The music is the real magic of the Doors - a synthesis of the genius of four incredible musicians.

I only recently started paying more attention to this song. It is one of the most intense songs I've ever heard. And i don't mean that overused version of "intense." I mean when it becomes hard to breathe when you're really just listening to the masterful musicianship being displayed and Jim's legendary explosiveness in his voice. He truly was an electric poet.

Devon - Yeah, you're right about intense, and they were the most intense band ever. Joy Division were way intense, but obviously completely different. Both baritone singers. Not bragging ( I just happened to be born in '47), but I saw the Doors in Madison in '68. Jim freaked out right at the end and swung the fairly heavy mic stand around in an arc and smashed it onto the floor. The band were in the middle of a song and stopped abruptly, then Jim walked. The band and the audience were like WTF??? He didn't return. So, concert over, sports fans! Nobody clapped or cheered cause nobody knew WTF was going on. This was about 40 minutes in. Strangest ending to a concert ever, for me.
@deVon302419 жыл бұрын

I was born in 2003 in Hungary. When I was ten, I bought a walkman on the street for about two bucks. I searched all the boxes in the garage and I found an Eastern European knockoff tape that was titled "Best of The Doors". This was the first song I've heard from them, laying on my stomach on the floor, drawing with a graphite pencil. I'll never forget that moment

It was the most honest expression of a generation that grew up on false promises and attempted to find itself in the key years 1965-1969.. ..Yet In the end many of us become disenchanted and unfortunately become cynical and selfish and created many of the problems facing the Millennial generation. I personally believe Ray Manzarek is the greatest keyboardist that ever lived. Nobody could play like him.
