I worked with Jim (Jim Bob) Hamner for several years at the University of Virginia. Jim was a good story teller in his own right. When I would leave for the day, if Jim was still at his desk, I would always say, "Good night, Jim Bob."

How absolutely precious of a man he is. I hope he realizes that he is just as important as his brother Earl is as is the rest of the family. Without them Earl wouldn't have had created The Waltons. They are all wonderful. God bless the Hamners and their story.

This makes me miss my mother’s family so much. My mother’s people go back seven generations living and thriving in the foothills of Virginia. The accents take me back to my childhood when my grandparents, great-grandparents and great aunts and uncles were all still alive. I can hear their voices in Paul’s gentle liIting Virginia foothills accent. I now live about two hours east of where the Waltons grew up and it’s become so diverse that I feel that I’ve lost my family roots so I’m itching to move further west in the state. To move back and reconnect with my family’s roots. In short I want to go home like John Boy and the children always did.

The accent is like sweet music to my Massachusetts ears. Such a gentile sound. I could fall in love with a southern gentleman. My ancestors on my mothers side came from Virginia, Kentucky and North Carolina. My 4th great grandfather was a baptist preacher down there. Rev. Andrew Tribble. The depression brought my mother up this way for work in the shoe shop factories in Manchester, NH.

'Family sitting on the porch, 25:10hrs, no talking just listening to the sound of the night the animals & insects,' modern families have a lot to learn to have quite moments together away from television, computers. Growing up in the Phils I never know about the Waltons until I found the repeats just recently and I'm hooked.

What a magnificent human being! What a magnificent show! What a magnificent work of art by Paul's brother, Earl, Jr! I have been watching the Waltons since 1971 and I love it dearly! Earl, Junior was an absolute genius! How sad that the is gone from us, but let this wonderful show continue to be shown, again and again! I recently toured the Walton/Hamner House and it is an incredible century old time capsule! The restoration is exquisite. The docent is incredibly well informed, about the show and about the Hamner family. She embodies the charm and grace of old Virginia. What a magnificent opportunity this is! Good night, Earl, Jr!

@@tkkcali that explains it, think you know everything and know nothing, typical slow joe supporter. Grayson county (where I live) is south of Charlottesville and Nelson county. You can't go any further south in Virginia than Grayson county, I am literally 2 miles from the North Carolina state line. My town is Independence, the town right beside it is Sparta North Carolina. A five minute drive from my house. Exactly five counties southeast of Nelson county is Grayson county. I will admit in the original post I said a couple of counties south of Nelson not meaning it literally. But Grayson is in the Blue Ridge mountains. My. Rodgers is the highest elevation in Virginia and it's in Grayson county. Are you man enough to own up to being wrong on that point ?

Thank you for putting this video out. Mr. Paul is such a wonderful and humble man to share his sweet memories. It brought to mind so many memories. I’m 54 but there is a connection to the past through our families that cannot be gained any other way then through their memories and recollections. My mother passed away suddenly at 74, 5 years ago. She grew up in the piney woods of north Louisiana and we have a family reunion at the family church/cemetery each year. The last one we attend before she died, she and I drive around the dirt roads after it was over and I video taped as she told me about each little landmark, old home places, the pond where she was baptized. It was so precious and little did I know she would be gone before the next reunion. She grew up with no indoor bathroom until she was 15(1955). I just watched the Walton’s episode, ‘The Baptism’ on ME Tv channel this morning and they were baptizing in a pond. It also showed little boys listening to the preaching from outside the church with their heads in the windows. My Uncle said cows would sometimes stick their heads in the windows during church and the boys loved it because they got to go outside and run the cows off. That little church still has services. So many salvations, funerals, and weddings there over the 150 years and I was so blessed with a Godly heritage. So very thankful.

What a treasure of an interview, and such a lovely man. His voice sounds just like his brother, Earl. It's no wonder The Walton's was such a huge success. I absolutely love the show. It reminds me of my dad's parents. Same big family, even the Hamner house looks like theirs. They had their own large flower and vegetable garden. Grandma cooked everything from scratch; and they had no "new fangled contraptions" (as they called them) in the house: no phone, had a ringer washer, outhouse. We kids were bathed outside in a tin tub. Happy, happy times! I would not be growing up today for anything!!!!

Great interview with Paul. The Waltons TV show is a treasure to me because I was living with my grandparents when it aired, and it instigated so many questions from me and conversations shared between us that I don't know if we would ever have had otherwise. My grandmother would have been about Erin's age in the timeline and my grandad would have been a couple years older than Johnboy. The main difference is both their family's were affected by the dustbowl, so they had grown up in much more impoverished conditions and without the security of an established home. Otherwise they seemed to approve of the authenticity in general.

Paul is right about the mothers being the backbone of the household. Women had to be strong, sensible and loving. It was up to the women to run the household, raise the children and nurture the family. A woman works from the time she gets up in the morning until she goes to bed at night. Men want to work their 8-hour days and then be left in peace to relax, women never get that luxury. I'm sick to death of "housewives" being looked down on. I worked harder when I stayed home than I did when I worked outside of the home. This show was such a good example of what it was like to be a wife and mother in those days and how difficult it was. We have it so easy today in comparison. I loved hearing Paul's stories about the Hamners. I'm grateful to Earl Hamner for writing his books about the family and bringing them to us on TV. They are such an inspiration.

Kiwi here. Born 1976. I grew up thinking the waltons were New Zealanders lol and that country roads was about a farm here smh bit can you blame me? I was only 4 or 5 lol so I was impressionable. Saying that though, I loved them as my own. I saw Elizabeth as a sister, and Jim Bob as an older brother. Yet, John boy was the eldest I was to find out years later lol and their parents and grandparents also grew on me. They were exactly like my kiwi Family. 2022, now we're worlds apart. Thank you earl hamner. Thank you for sharing your family with me Over the years gone by. Kiwi NZL 🇳🇿

I have Albemarle County Gianniny (not 'i') relatives and always wondered if any of them knew the Hamners.

When I think back on the Hamners/Waltons I imagine they thought to themselves "depression, what depression?"

I grew up watching the Walton’s. My mother would’ve been the age of Mary Ellen’s character (b. 1919, had me when she was 43), and I grew up hearing all about my mom’s life on Beckett Mountain (Arkansas) which her great grandfather Beckett had settled. Seeing life during the Depression portrayed in that family setting on “Walton’s Mountain” helped me picture my mom’s childhood and experiences on Beckett Mountain. She always said (about the Depression) that everyone around them was poor, too, so it wasn’t so noticeable that there was anything different. I sure miss my mom, but at least I can still watch The Walton’s and recapture some of my childhood.
