In America the generally accepted adage is to never discuss religion or politics. This Prof is breaking that rule which is great. I believe religion and politics should be discussed. That is the only way we can hope understand each other and get along.

58th minute, I disagree. I'm a Christian myself, but i don't base my morality solely on my religion. if atheists would do that, it would be morally acceptable for them to go around harming and killing people, since in their opinion there's no divine above them. Moral code is mostly based on the need of being a good, decent person like our parents taught us and the law requires obviously. I go live my live not thinking would i gain myself a place in heaven if i do this or that, but can i live my life without harming others and on the way make this world a better place even a little bit? Especially that various religion will have different opinion about certain topics. So (i loosely quote somebody's opinion) if i'd like different approach to some issues, should i change my religion and live by different rules, which could be more convenient for me and have the religion as an excuse?

I don't think you're giving him enough credit. This is an intro class for these students. He is trying to get people thinking. You have to stay at a low level in that scenario. He has to remain curious because he's acting as an avatar for the individual audience members. I would bet dollars to donuts that he's thoroughly versed in anything he's talking about.

@@RAH.910 Without wanting to enter into an area that would require an in-depth sociological(!), and even before that historical and philosophical, analysis, I limit myself here to observing that the watershed between Western and Eastern societies in general, and confessional ones in particular (Muslim and Hindu ) is the value attributed to the individual. On the one hand the individual is the center of society, also from a normative point of view, on the other the family, where the individual takes on value only as part of it. Far from wanting to express value judgments, which would be out of place here, the fact remains that the "freedom" of the individual is subjected to almost inescapable social norms and expressing superficial judgments on this, as the professor does during the lesson, trivializes a social phenomenon which has enormous repercussions on people and society as a whole.

I may have just answered my own question. Surah An Naml says the ants fled from the footfalls of solomon's army so he would not be guilty of treading on them... The hadith tradition takes this to mean it is bad to kill an ant even if it bites you...
