Yes, skin is just different shades of the same protein. However, there are significant differences in medicine in how people of various groups respond to medication, their propensities for an assortment of diseases, etc. There is enough differences to make correct generalities about risk for diabetes, lactose intolerance, hypertension, cancer, etc., that it is irresponsible for doctors to not consider race in medical treatment. Skin color is of little to no importance (unless it's related to the skin, such as with melanoma), but race is only marginally related to one's skin. It's only that when we look at people, we notice the color of skin more than what is actually different.

While all European countries have their own flags and anthems, there isn't the same compulsion to flaunt them overtly. By including the caucus people in the category of whites, he was hoping to draw more attention to their plight. It wasn't because he was particularly in love with them, just that he wanted to draw a strict border between white europe and eastern islam, and entrench that in the common consciousness. Most people I have spoken to that are "white" don't even think about it. It just doesn't click, it's not a club, or tribe. There are many different peoples that are considered "White" that have darker skin. So what I see from this conversation is that a whole lot of people consider certain actions or mindsets to be "White". Why does it matter? Everyone experiences discrimination somewhere in the US. White people too, just ask the people living in Newark or N. Stl. There are many stereotypes out there that reflect certain behaviors produced by different cultures. This is what people think of whenever a race, any race, is mentioned. Semantics matter. Why do we categorize ourselves in these ways? I feel it is an evolutionary remnant that helped to protect the nascent town or village from invasion. People that looked different were a true potential threat that needed to be addressed. Most Americans lack perspective on other cultures. The whole "Go backpack through Europe" thing was a good idea, I think.
