So I’ve been using this chassis (for unraid) for many years. But instead of being just data storage, since I’m using unraid, it’s my primary server. I use a 3970x (threadripper), 128GB of ram and I currently have 20x 10tb with two of those being parity, and nvme for my cache. I run my plex off of this, torrent/seed box, and all my vms into of my network shares. I love this case.

I would love to see the process of getting it all going, and how well it works, etc. You specified spinning disks; are there any other options for high-volume data storage, that don't have spinning disks? And what is the purpose of having all that data available constantly, as opposed to labelling a drive once it's more or less full, with everything on it, and then putting it away in storage?
@TechnicallyNerdy
@TechnicallyNerdy 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if there are solid state options. It seems industry standard for THIS sort of application is spinning disks. I know there are 10TB disks now, which, is crazy. It's not that I need access to THIS data all the time - it's that I need it sometimes, and sometimes I'll need other data stored on these drives. What I don't want is my workflow impacted. If I want something from a year ago, I don't want to have to go digging and then bring it online. Probably part of my data hoarding "problem" :)

Storage is so much fun (it's what i do for a living) as some others have mentioned do remember that just because you have raid running and you have drive redundancy those are not a backup. While I don't always like referencing Linus for Enterprise IT practices (because he lacks there ALOT) he did do a video on TAPE backups and those if you ask my opinion as a storage admin are you best route to go. Find a family member or someone you can mail the tapes to and they can store them. That way you have a cold storage at a remote location. It sucks to retrieve that way but $$$ saved for something you might never need will be huge. Cloud storage and the like gets expensive and it's not expensive on the upload it's when you pull it back down that they get you.
@MMuraseofSandvich
@MMuraseofSandvich 5 жыл бұрын
As someone who was a tier 2 support tech for a datacenter in a previous life (it sounds cooler than it actually was), I can vouch for the resiliency of tapes. We would have HDD failures at least once a week (multiple RAID 10 arrays), we would have the CE look, "Yup, there's yer problem", and have him do the replacement. I think like 2 out of the 6 or 7 clients we managed had a fully-automated rebuild process, the rest we would need to log into the server with the storage management software, perform the rebuild manually, and babysit it until it finished. About as fun as watching paint dry while explosives were being planted nearby (let's just say, constant parallel firefighting sucked... "No boom today. Boom tomorrow. There's always boom tomorrow."). Over my entire tenure there (about 5 years), I saw maybe 1 tape failure. Usually the robotic tape carousel/jukebox thingie in charge of shuffling tapes in and out of the single tape drive of the backup server would be an absolute nightmare to deal with (misread tape labels, jamming mechanism, nothing about that piece of garbage was reliable), but the LTO tapes themselves were practically bulletproof. We even used them to bootstrap/provision a testing server with production data (nowadays I'd imagine they would just spin up a new VM).

I love me good Storage Solutions. Raid Is great for Data redundancy if using Striping and mirroring. Couple that with unraid and you don't necessarily need expensive SAS or Sata Raid Cards. For me I personally like to build the raid with fresh Drives like the WD Red's or Ironport Sas Drives so that you don't end up killing a drive that was previously used. I am looking forward to the rest of this video. ;-)

If you are going to go to that much trouble, and that type of chassis, you DEFINITELY should get a SAS controller, and run a TRUE, full-on RAID system! Drives are so much larger than just a few years ago, and are dirt cheap. A real, kick-ass setup would be to set up 10 drives in RAID-10, + 2 cold spares, then when you get the chance, duplicate the same in the other 12 bays, resulting in TWO identical arrays. Now, you will not only have a super high-performance system, should any of the drives go out on the primary array, you will have a cold spare that can be quickly brought online to replace the slacker drive that decided to quit. In such a setup, you would have to have FOUR of those drives quit on you before getting worried about any data loss! Plus, even if that were to happen, you have the LIVE secondary array that you could run a nightly backup script automatically. A true belt and suspenders approach, also with screaming performance that will make you giggle.

Good luck Joel, unraid is awesome. Be aware that unraid is not installed from the usb, it actually runs of it so it has to stay plugged in. In my box I got a thing that connects to a usb header on the motherboard and creates a usb port inside the chassis to keep me from accidentally unplugging it.

Definitely would like to see more, I have a buddy who’s a wedding and commercial videographer whom also self identifies as a hoarder so I’m helping him out move beyond stacks of WD blacks in the closet. Looked at systems from 45 drives as well as buying second hand enterprise gear (not a bad option either btw). So curious how this progresses and how the unraid setup goes, also I believe unraid just handles the drive mapping and volumes I believe you’ll also need an os and file server on there. But I might be mistaken hence why I’m curious for more, as your use case is extremely similar to the project I’m helping a friend with

i run 3 FreeNAS Servers. Absolutely love them, unraid is good too, i have friends who use unraid just for its VM capabilities. 24 drivers should give you a decent amount of space. Make sure you R-Sync or raid 10 for those drive as i have experienced first hand what its like to drop a drive from a 30 tb stripe array.... it sucks. needless to say i learned my lesson. BUt yea looks like a good project. ( i now use 1 of the servers to back up the 1 on site and 1 off site freenas servers using RSync as a dump. Super easy to set up using tunneling and a VPN through ovpn. The Dump freeNAS Server is a 80 TB server receiving data from a 15 tb off site server and a 60tb on site server. and yes the Dump is just a bunch of drives striped together, but are separated by data sets so if one drive dies in the backup , only 20 tb will need to be rebuilt, which isnt too bad. and yes 10gig is a wonderful thing. Expensive as hell tho.

Please take your time in checking out the various top-tier operating systems for distribution and find one that meets your design goals (you may have already done some research off-screen, that's great, i just want to make sure that you know that there are other options out there and that you've had the ability to make that choice for yourself.). I've tried out unraid, but unraid doesn't do any of the fancier data parity scrubbing / self-healing / automatic snapshotting goodness that something like a system based on ZFS (such as FreeNAS, which is a great option and likely what i will be going with for my next NAS) can provide, there is also the possibility of various other linux based storage operating system distributions such as openmediavault, proxmox ve (although proxmox is designed as an operating system to host virtual machines, it has zfs support and one could easily set up an awesome storage server in a linux container that utilizes the underlying storage that could be incredibly versatile depending on your goals). I (and i'm sure many other) community members would be happy to help you out if you have any questions about anything. please feel free to hit me up on twitter @cpgeek if I can help. Also the good people over at /r/datahorder on reddit are great to see about this stuff as well. Also while i'm at it, in case anyone is looking for significantly less expensive high density disks for use in NAS setups, I strongly recommend WD EasyStore external hard drives. They are basically the same design as WD red drives (their nas variety designed for high up time), and the 10tb model (With a free 32gb flash drive, great for installing your OS and in the case of freenas or other usb loving storage systems, installing your OS TO) all for $169 right now on best buy www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-easystore-10tb-external-usb-3-0-hard-drive-with-32gb-easystore-usb-flash-drive-black/6290669.p?skuId=6290669 - all you need to do is shuck the disks (which is a very easy process that is chronicled on youtube by quite a few people), and it comes with a 2 year warranty which (at least in the US) is NOT voided by shucking the drives (although you must keep the (serialized) enclosure and reassemble the drive (Also easy) in order to make a warranty claim) - the usb enclosure (and in particular the sata to usb interface) is quite good as well (usb3) and is great to keep around for things like moving data off old drives and the like.

That Cheese Grater still looks dope today! Talk about a company losing its way - when the Trash Can came out, I knew I was done with them.

One word, Synology.

From what I've read, this is good stuff as well. Plus, the synology 24 bay is thousands of dollars - and that's without disks. I'll be around $1k for this without disks.

norco seems pretty outdated , name changed to norcotec or so, other brands have parts that pretty much look like the norco, like the caddys.. they might came from one factory. its not easy find a case and specially documentations are not exist in the boxes thats a shame, its stuff you need to find out all yourself. Inter-tech seems most recent brand for servercases at least here in europe.

Your really going with spinning disks? You know that they will all fail in time. I would have thought you would be using ssd instead. 3 to 5 years on average for spinning disks and associated moving parts. Wish you luck. Data recovery is expensive.

Right, I mean, everything fails in time. I think spinning disks now-a-days have MTBF rates much higher than they used to. Plus, by the time these start to see failures, hopefully, larger SSDs exist :)

You're talking 10s of thousands of dollars to to get the capacity Joel wants with SSDs. For this sort of thing, spinning disks are fine. That's why you implement redundancy into these systems. If you really want to be pedantic, you can order the drives from separate places (or different times) so you get separate lots so the MTBF is spread out a little between the drives (I've never done this but some people swear by it). It's true that the more drives you add the more likely you are to have a failure, so with that many drives I'd set it up so that you have protection against at least two drives failing at the same time. Also, because it's more than just drives failing that you have to worry about, you need to have redundancy in both workflow and storage. At this level, with that much storage, I'd build two arrays. One for local storage and one that I'd take off-site that the local one would backup to. Or, utilize one of the many cloud storage solutions back it up (or both if you want to be really paranoid). In any case Joel is correct that, overall the MTBF is so long on drives today that, while failure is certainly an eventuality, it's not like you're going to have a failure every month. Also, SSDs can and do fail.
