bro, if you are going to spend that much money on a cpu, for threadripper, you might as well just get an Epyc and get full server functionality. Also, the PSU fans will only make a lot of noise when they ramp up, which is only on boot up, plus when your power draw increases. With no hard drives, they are probably running at a minimal level.
@GravGunner5 жыл бұрын
Agreed, go for a low tier Epyc CPU (or CPU's). Also, *IF* you mod a PSU, be very, very sure it can take the startup load and whatnot of 48 drives, that is mostly where those PSU's are for. (And again, do NOT name it Loki (The god of Mischief), trust me)
@thtadthtshldntbe5 жыл бұрын
@@GravGunner He might not even have to go low tier. Threadripper is going to cost, depending upon sku, anywhere from 1000 to 2500 bucks. If he will buy the top end threadripper, that's in the mid tier of Epyc and a mid tier Epyc will outperform an equally priced Threadripper at all server functionality.

EPYC server for Odin!!
@RealKanashii5 жыл бұрын
Plex works better with high speeds for every core than multiple low speed cores. The main reason for this behavior is that the audio is decoded only in one core per stream, no multithreaded so you want the best speed possible per core (this case is ignoring the video which will be decoded/encoded via GPU). I guess the highest Threadripper cpu will equal the lower EPYC cpu in core numbers but with higher clock speeds. We'll see.

Good upgrade! I had bought 3 of these ( just the empty chassis with PSUs) they are certainly loud and honestly the PSUs are not that efficient. Currently I have one fully built with 2 2650v2s and 64 gig of ECC RAM for now. The back-planes have another SAS connector on them for more bandwidth if you so choose to add another card. I highly recommend switching all fans to Noctua, not only because they are quieter, but also much more efficient. But overall, they are great for the price. I currently run Ubuntu with ZFS. Anyway, can't wait to see what you end up doing! I would like to build the other 2 I have and make a Gluster Cluster. Yes, I know I am a data hoarder. P.S. You cant put a normal power supply the HBA plates for the 48 drives use very specific power pins you would have to make custom cables the good thing the manufacture does make all that info available but i just think too much work. Before you buy new hardware for that chassis. Make sure you test all the drive bays to make sure the backplane is working. To do so the easiest way is to boot the server into the raid utility and insert a drive into a slot and wait for it to be detected, once it is move it to the next slot.

Changing the motherboard on this would be really stupid. And since the coolers on the cpu's are passive, you NEED that high airflow fans.
@ThatOneGuyGreggers5 жыл бұрын
Yeah those are definitely active coolers on the CPU. There are side blowers on them.

Are you sure that backplane can handle larger than 4tb drives? In the listing it states up to 192tb of storage which is 48x4tb=192tb.
@Bytemybits5 жыл бұрын
yes. it is currently preclearing 4x10TB drives as I type.

Welcome to the big leagues 😆 you might be fine with the fans. I worked with mine before I swapped just by turning down the fan duty cycles. The loudest in my case was the cpu fans. I swapped them and its wisper quite. I didnt swap the power supplies because they idle the fans when they are not under load.

By the way there is a button on the front to mute it from screaming when all psu's are not powered.

close the damn case ! Those psu's are prolly only loud under high load, and can probably modded, with the two fans in serries, if 12V. You can probably do the same with the 120mm, while that could also give an error

If Zeus was becoming "slow" for you, I believe you bought this purely for the case & drive trays. The question is can you reuse that backplane while connecting it to a whole different set of Raid (IT mode) cards and a different motherboard. In my experience this platform is not nearly worth the cooling, power consuption, incompatibility with recent tech... for the performance you get. An E5-1650v4/W-3145/E-2146g... or as you are considering new Threadripper will run circles around this. This tech is obsolete though server looks in good shape. What you do get out of stuff like this is the appreciation for case design: - 2x 2.5'' bays for OS in RAID 1 mode - HDD bays layout for hot-swapping and cooling - what kind of an airflow these fas can produce - rack design - redundant PS - 6-7 PCIe slots as you start getting more and more expansion cards ... imho, in the end you will probably throw away everything besides the case and HDD trays no matter how well it all still looks and was designed to work together. If you manage to find the backplane operative in your new setup, it might be a win. If you find the backplane to have faulty connectors (there are 48 spots that can go wrong :-) or that it's reducing the performance more than desired (good, direct cable is often best, but it can not be hot-swap) - you will get to have a new big case and some really cheap-ass HDD trays. Regarding this kind of server design, if it suits your needs and budget, Dell R720xd 12 LFF HDD is definitely one of top case+platform combos you can get for this kind of usage/money. For DIY non-proprietary platforms (Dell, HP, Lenovo) for storage I also really like this case kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaTVaZKvpLpqp6c If you would've swalloved the initial cost which I assume is more than you gave for this, there are many pains like noise, PS's... you avoid. For us who are following it's entertaining to watch enthusiastic home lab owners.

48 bays > 12 bays on the XD. What makes logical sense to you isn't what this channel is about. Sure he could but an off the shelf solution but that wouldn't get views or subs. KZbin guy spends $2k on prebuilt or used system. It's Jason's DIY attempts, failures and re-attempts that has most of us coming back week in and week out.

@@jonathan.sullivan R720xd is not off the shelf, but off eBay. And getting it for cheap means you will have plently of stuff you will have to tweak before it performs well. I would agree there is a very large population of home enthusiasts building and geeking and we meet on places like this. What DIY in this case means is very vague - DIY an old server, DIY a Threadripper in an old server case... Let's enjoy the ride.

@@studentinfomovie where do you think eBay got it? It's a click a and buy from Dell. Most of them on eBay are off business lease servers. One click Buy = off the shelf. Source: I sell similar servers.

i'd leave the psu's if i could but i'd definitely water cool the thread ripper with a 360mm rad, even if it was an aio. But ideally a custom loop. Lots of room for a pump reservoir

Guess you don't normally work with servers. You can typically turn off the warning beeps in BIOS or Management console of the board for Power Supply failure. Full fan speed is typically normal when you plug them in, they should normally spin down over time when its properly booted.
