Did you have any problems with the bears, and did you have to hire a rifle for safety?

No problems (this time). While I was there I saw no statute or law that states that persons HAVE to carry a rifle beyond Longyearbyen city limits. I do know that many people will at least advise you not leave the settlement of Longyearbyen without a rifle. The polar bears very rarely venture this far south for the summer as they prefer to remain where the pack ice is (far to the north) - that being said, they have an extremely acute sense of smell and remain very much a threat to human life if unprepared. In short, you take your own risk when exploring Svalbard. The campsite outside the airport remains inside the 'safety zone'.

louise cockell At the Longyearbyen/Svalbard campsite there are usually present a number of freelance trek guides that offer a number of popular routes as well as the option to discuss original routes. I paid 2000kr (around £200 at the time) to go on a two-day hike to the abandoned settlement of Grumantbyen - that was a very challenging, but rewarding, hike. Nothing grows much in Svalbard and almost everything (including food sources) has to be imported. The importing costs nullify the 'tax-free' benefit of Svalbard's economy. Indeed, make sure your wallet is stacked with banknotes. A burger and chips inside the 'Svalbar' sportsbar will set you back almost £10 - and that's pretty reasonable in Scandinavia for such a meal!
