Yes its mandatory and very strict checking in airports malls basically very big public place because India has had a very rough past with terrorists bombings and plus with neighbours Pakistan its just a norm even us Indians feel exhausted sometimes with the checking but you know its important for public safety. :)

The security is so tight , since the mumbai terror attack (hotel mumbai netflix movie was from that highly recommended) as there are high level tensions between india ,pakistan and china . Security is always tight but we are used to it 😂.
