I really wonder why you took this train, when there is another train available which takes only 15hrs to Almaty. That train is much better; it has a pantry car and bar inside which made it really easy for us to get food and other stuff. Also, the price of water is normally higher in Kazakhstan and don't expect it be cheaper on the station when somebody is taking pain to sell it IN THAT WEATHER particularly. Secondly, we were there last week only and boarded the other train to Almaty, the staff was very helpful and supportive. Anyways, kudos to the content!
