Cold, snowy environments can be unforgiving, but for Allied armies, the task of collective defence means being ready to operate in any climate. That is why the NATO Centre of Excellence (COE) for Cold Weather Operations, based in Rena, Norway, teaches Allied troops how to survive and thrive in the snowy woods.
To try what it takes to deal with these harsh conditions, we sent one of our video producers to tag along for 24 hours with a group of NATO soldiers participating in one of the Centre’s cold-weather survival courses. Deep into the Norwegian forest, facing freezing temperatures and with only a few essential tools to help fight against the cold, he tested first-hand how demanding - and unforgiving - withstanding such conditions can be.
Survival courses focus on building an experienced core group of cold-weather survivalists, who can then bring their experience back to their armies and teach others. As we face the most serious security situation in decades, ensuring that Allied soldiers are prepared to protect our people in all terrains and weather conditions has become even more essential.

@@FS-flashLol true. Can't believe I'm about to say this, but I'm glad to live in the Philippines, a third world country, instead of living in a place where I'm to be detained and tortured because of draconian laws that protect the fragile feelings of authoritarian war criminals, and if I'm lucky, I'm to be drafted in the Russian meat grinder war in Ukraine to be killed by far more competent military forces because my government prioritizes defending stolen land instead of human lives. At least democracy, free speech, and common sense laws are still held in high regard here in my country, which can't be said of Russia, and I still continue to live prosperously. May God protect our filipino soldiers who live in constant threat from China and Islamic extremists in Mindanao.

I salute my Scandinavian brothers and sisters. I recently had a camp that unexpectedly dropped to -2c and it was "unpleasant" because we did not bring the right kit. These guys train for -1 to -40c. I have nothing but respect for people that camp in these temperatures. I have experienced -25c Didnt have to camp in it.... thankfully.

Worst i've ever seen was -10 Celsius while wildcamping, going to norway in 2 weeks, just curious what is your lowest temperature you ever felt?
@norsenomad
@norsenomad 2 ай бұрын
What are you even talking about, soumalainen? Through history, the absolute lowest temperature recorded at any weather station in Finland is -51.5°C, the lowest temperature ever recorded in Norway is −51.4 °C, and the lowest temperature ever recorded in Sweden is -52.6°C. Coldest this year in Finland was -42.4°C, in Enontekiö on 4 January 2024. Coldest this year in Norway was -43.5°C, in Kautokeino on 5 January 2024. Coldest this year in Sweden was -43.8°C, in Naimakka also on the same day. ...So, coming to Finland in January, as you suggested - even on the coldest time and location - would in fact be warmer than what Norway had to offer. Records shows that the differences between the neighbouring countries are - unsurprisingly - insignificant, at best. Hardly anything to lash out about in public, but if you insist on being particular about it: our brother Sweden wins ...while I prefer to say that all three can be similar. A key lesson here is: winds and air pressures can arrive from ANY direction, depending on the overall weather system. Some days, the Atlantic Ocean plays NO role for the current temperature, a few kilometres inland. And as history has taught us, through some hundred generations, weather is often similar across Fenno-Scandia. You are welcome to visit Norway, any time. Cheers! 👍

i have lived in both norway and the southern california desert, and norway in the winter is much harsher. While the desert is dry and you have little water, you don't need as much equipment as when it is cold. The issue is that while there is plenty of water in the form of snow or ice, you have to process it, eating snow dehydrates you, and you loose body heat, so you have to melt it and to be safe cook it. The other issue is that the very dryness of the desert saves a lot of problems you will never face in snow, you as a person emit heat, and heat melt snow which gets wet, if you get wet you lose heat very quickly and can die, so you need good clothing to minimize this problem, you also will need fuel for a fire, which either needs to be carried or gathered, you will need to either carry or build a shelter, again more stuff to lug around or use time and effort to gather and build it, in the desert all you need is a poncho and some thing to prop it up and you have a serviceable shelter, unlike in the snow where you will need a sleeping bag along with e a tent or some sort of shelter that keep wind and cold at bay. Besides that there is the whole calorie requirement, in cold condistions you will need 50-100% more calories to function, calories that will either have to be carried or gathered by time and effort. In the end in the cold you need much more "help" to live, you need more stuff to be able to survive let alone function and operate.

Dear NATO... I did a "trench heater" experiment in the springtime. But I'm just a civilian, and know nothing of thermal imaging. Not sure if it's too warm Trench candle secured in a vented 50 cal. ammo can actually reached 130°C at the "top" of the "trench heater". The ambient temp was about -6°C... and I was surprised that the paint and rubber gasket survived (uploaded to Instagram and KZbin) I didn't do it for views... I was thinking about Ukrainian soldiers with frostbite... then the thaw happened... but I still wonder what happens to empty metal ammo cans... these "trench heaters" seem reusable with another candle

Well, I'll be honest. I could never imagine that Russia would so brutally invade a neighbouring country and start a war. I always thought that peace through trade is a wise and safe decision (I am German)I thought NATO is an outdated alliance and none of our trading partners from the East would break this alliance. My goodness I was so naive.....how could this happen! Now I am glad that NATO is there! Every soldier has my full support. Stay strong!

Nice video but just saying as a former Canadian infantryman. And as a soldier who deployed to Norway, above the Arctic circle, for a month during February/March... First, we Canadians are pretty much all qualified in terms of winter warfare. Either you get qualified in basic training. Or your first winter. Snowshoes, tents, sleeping outside, tactics, lighting a Coleman stove, etc. Second, I would totally disagree with the concept of lighting fires. Sounds like a civilian survival thing. Never once did I as a Canadian soldier light a fire out in the field. Or in Norway. Nevermind in the Arctic where there is nothing to burn. But why? Simply because it's NOT tactical, at all. Light a fire, create smoke and the enemy will see you. Third, much more important. Learn how heat works. You don't freeze to death because it's cold outside. You die because heat is escaping from your body. Use a layered approach to clothing, stay dry, understand the concept of insulators and conductors. Snow is an insulator, metal is a conductor, dry is good, wet is bad. Fourth, learn how to snowshoe, it's not that hard, single track into a camp, doesn't matter if you have a 100 guys, you don't want to give away your position. And most importantly, teamwork, never be on your own in the middle of winter.
