24 Hours with Female Marines in NYC: Fleet Week

NYC Fleet Week - an annual event where active duty Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen descend upon the city to rub elbows with the public and blow off some steam.
But to a lot of civilians, the image of ‘Fleet Week’ has been shaped by TV shows like “Sex in the City” - a kind of holiday where men in uniform are rewarded with free drinks and women throwing themselves at them.
But how true is that narrative when talking about female service members? What do they want out of Fleet Week? Last year, Vice’s Erica Matson was invited aboard the USS Arlington to spend 24 with a group of female Marines as they experienced Fleet Week for the first time.
CORRECTION: at 3:11, we state that "the military civilian divide is at an all time low", which is incorrect -- according to the United States DOD, the military-civilian divide is at an all time high. We regret the error.

What most civilians don't understand is that the military doesn't start wars, politicians do and specifically career politicians. As long as career politicians are allowed to remain in positions of power, the military will be needed.

I hear lots of negative comments about politicians.. which I totally understand but what are the options folks? Should we all just have no co-ordination? Should we just let every state run things the way they want, without any coordination between states. Do people think that there is no politics in the military, or in any organization where there are more than two people? And the distrust of career politicians... ya Trump, how's that working out for you? Let's stop career military.. just give folks guns and let them have at it.

Even in peacetime without conflict, there will always be a need for a military. HADR roles for environmental catastrophes for starters. Look at the scale required too assist like Californian fires earthquakes, Hurricanes, floods etc across Usa. Mass migration due to climate change will put a greater strain on your borders than you ever experienced in history too. Domestic terrorism has called on explosive experts, intelligence from the military as does continued Army ,Navy, Air force Navy assist to stop drug smugglers abroad.

There was no chance that they were going to do that. They were clearly hand-picked by their command to be interviewed by the press. The giveaway was the part at 9:15 where the lieutenant was talking about how her dad -- an Army veteran -- was unenthusiastic about his daughter joining the Marines. The reporter asked why, and the obvious answer is that her dad was afraid that his daughter would get sexually assaulted. She was clearly pretending when she said she didn't know why her dad was unenthusiastic about her joining, and then she said something really vague instead. She'll definitely get a NAM for that one.

I was in the Marines for 7 years. 4 years active duty and 3 reserves.. I got out as a Sergeant. I really enjoyed my time in. But when I got married and became pregnant with my first baby, I got out. Being a mother and Marine does not mix. But that is my humble opinion. I never encountered sexual assault during my time in. I did have some guys during my single years when I was stationed overseas ask for a hug when they were drunk because they didn't remember the last time they felt the touch of a woman. I took one for the team and gave those guys a nice long hug. It never offended me. Anyway. Neat video. But I will say those officers are boot AF. lol 😂

Why are you using Jarhead as a portrayal of " . . . over the top frontline combat . . ." ? This film is *famously* known for being an accurate portrayal of what happens in a lot of warzones (based on the real life experiences of the marine portrayed by Gyllenhaal), where . . . nothing ever really happens. It's also *famously* known for being an anti-war film, and not an action blockbuster.

He swore me in enlisted and then as an officer. Dads sister was in the Navy, one brother in Navy and one in the Army. Numerous cousins, neices and neohews also served. Am now enjoying the perks of serving 25 years. E7 MSGT and then Captain 0-3. Hopefull some of these soliders will do 20 years even though the odds may be stacked against them. I was Navy (1967-71). The ship i was on carried 500 Marines everyplace it went. We pulled into St. Martin as a four day liberty port with our full compliment. I can say this, if your in the military, you haven't experienced a REAL liberty unless you have spent it with the Marines. Friendliest bunch of guys i ever met. We were thrown out of two casino hotel's (one on the Dutch side of the island and the other on the French), one brothel (french side), wrecked about a half dozen of those little cars they warned us NOT to rent, stuck the Dept. of Armed Forces with a HUGE bill for hospital costs and property damage and we were politely asked to leave port and not come back, by both the French and the Dutch that very first night. Naturally, we spent the next 3 days, us (ships crew) doing non-stop ships drills and the Marines doing non-stop physical drills. Well worth it for the great memory if nothing more. Of course, this was back in the old days when women weren't allowed on ships. :-)

@@MakerInMotion So you have a problem with young people knowing the truth? The country is evil because it has conservatives and conservatism was the foundation of the Satanic Bible. Conservatism about being pure evil. Some people are just evil, and they call themselves conservatives. Both the Republican and most of the democratic party leadership is conservative. When your beliefs are grounded in inverting Christian values, while at the same time falsely claiming to be Christian, you expressly state what you are. The country is the people, not the elites you conservatives serve as dogs. The young people don't hate the country. They hate you, the evil in this country. You are the rats chewing on the hull of the ship, and sinking this country. Name one good thing Republicans have done in the last 60 years. I can do pages of evil things. As to the military. The military murdered at least 2.4 million Americans with their above ground nuclear testing and they knew about fallout from Japan. That was a willful act. The military uses uranium for conventional weapons and some material came from spent nuclear fuel rods. If the human race continues to exist then they probably have killed billions. You asked the OP "name one good thing the conservatives have done" and as soon as he would, you plan on naming a few wrongs, right? The exact same thing can be done to any group, if you are familiar with it and if it is old enough. Wrongdoing accrues over time on any group's record, due to humanity's inability to control itself. Seriously, name me one good thing liberals have done, and I'll name you twice as many wrongs. You'll quickly find yourself on the losing end of those scales too. I wish they would bring back the old WM covers. They look so much more appropriate for WM's than the male covers do.

Agree. When I was getting out they were transitioning the WM dress blues into the male high collar blues. Ugh! Awful. I guess to make us 'equal'

I was in the Navy and did fleet week right after we had "Killed" Osama Bin Laden. One of the best times of my life. You are pretty much as celebrity up there. People will buy you anything you want. That trip made me fall in love with New York. Great people and some of the best food.

These girls are brand new to the military as evidenced by their ribbons and rank.... Kind of a misguided view of what it is to be in the service when they just got in... Maybe talk to someone that's been active longer than a month or 2?

I was on a DDG that did a port call in NYC in 1986 and we had lots and lots of fun. Stuff you could never get away with today. Things like coming back to the ship loaded at 0500 with no uniform shirt, cover or ribbons. We were allowed to bring new-found friends on for a tour of the ship as long as we kept them outside.
