@Fiona mcgonigle the sand pit (or P.I.T for platoon incentive training) is a place where you as an individual or with the rest of your platoon are taken to, to "correct" deficiency in training. You're put through intensive physical activity, combined with mental fatigue (mind games). It's not a fun place to be when everyone is throwing sand into the air and you're covered in sweat. You quickly learn to do things the way the DI's want them to be done, as a team.

As a former Marine myself, I appreciate that you and your fellow participants took this challenge seriously and did not make a joke of it. The gentleman who quit after day 1 is the reality of Marine Corps bootcamp. It's purpose in phase 1 and the first week of bootcamp is to weed out those not cut out for what's to come. You did an excellent job and put your heart into those 3 grueling days. It was great to witness. The respect you three had for each other, and the camaraderie you built in 3 shorts days, goes to show just why Marines bond all over the world because each know exactly what it took to earn that title of a United States Marine. Something nobody can ever take away. Esprit De Corp. Proud of you all for the hard work and dedication and respect for yourself and the Marine Corps.

If you join the military you understand that DI's and DS's are one of the most respected jobs anyone can be offered. You are literally training the next era of soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen. My Drill Sergeants were not my friends but I still stay in contact with them because they are the best of the best as far as guidance. At home they're completely normal people with families, but in order to change a person from a civilian to a disciplined soldier, you have to push them and that's what they do. Only about 1% of the population joins the military and it's their job to train and weed out those unfit to serve.

I admit, I started off getting a chuckle out of watching them go thought this and doubted they finish. But then I had a flashback to boot camp....I stopped the video to reminisce, and recall how tough boot camp was, how there were many recruits that showed up completely unprepared physically or mentally to do such a hard thing. Every recruit struggles with something at some point in training, whether physical, mental or spirit. We started off with almost 100 recruits in our platoon, we finished with 86 if I recall. A few were injured, a few didnt make it more than a week before they lost it or broke down and were discharged, a few were discharged for personal issues they had lied about like their police record, or owing child support. Yall deserve a big Ooo Rahh! and much respect for your efforts and sticking with it!!!! I sincerely hope that you were able to take some valuable lessons from it..... Michelle, you showed you have loads of spirit in the face of adversity!!! You pushed yourself, let your instructors push you and did awesome!!!! Thats the Marine corps spirit!!! The speech that Senior Drill Instructors give when you first meet them is so powerful. Someone telling you they expect 100% effort, and that they will do all they can for you to reach that is inspiring. You learn to love, hate and respect them, but in the end, and forever, you appreciate and cherish what they teach you that you can do with the right mind set.

My dad was in the marines and he would always talk about life back then. I would always not pay attention because I didn’t think it was a big deal. After watching this and seeing what they were all put through for only 3 days. My dad was in for 4 years. I can’t imagine how much he might have wanted to give up or just go home. He’s always told me how little sleep he got and how limited time you get to eat. I respect him and his stories so much more now. He really is my hero
