Can we just stop and appreciate two items here. 1. Andy continues to put out such quality content time and time again. Well done! Thanks for the entertainment from the states. We arent all as bad as the world thinks . 2. Generations before us were far more advanced than some often give credit to. Something which is seemingly so simple to build, such as a bridge, has held up for centuries, and they knew that the arch design was much stronger than other formations.
@jeromethiel43233 ай бұрын
The arch is an excellent example of materials engineering. Stone is very strong under compressive load, but terrible under tensile load. An arch is a way to convert tensile stress (a straight lintel stone) into compressive stress (an arch). The harder you pull down on an arch, the more compressive load you put into the stone. Oddly, some ancient civilizations never thought of arches. The Egyptians spring to mind. I don't think i have seen a single arch anywhere in ancient Egyptian architecture. I am sure if i am incorrect, someone will comment! ^-^

True. I live close to an aprox 2000 yo roman stone bridge (and aquaducts) where the legions would pass on the way up through Europe. Despite negligence and time etc all still stands. I don't think people realise the effort put in to actually film these and get the shots like walking up the hill and driving in to the area etc etc. It's so seemless and natural that people just take it for granted. But Andy films all these on his own. When you see him walking down the hill for example he's already walked it once. Set up the camera, just so he can film himself walking back up it just so he can show us on the video. Same with the morning shots of him rising and stepping out of his tent for the first time. But secret's out. He's already been out and set up the camera so he can film and show us him theoretically stepping out first thing in the morning. It's all done to add depth and aid the viewing experience for us the viewer. Nothing but respect for the dude. Cheers Andy. Absolutely love this channel👏👏👏

Yeah I used to work in a big estate and this looks like the ice house there. They were usually built underground. The circular shape was to hold the cold in, corners lead to a larger surface area. usually domed at the top and covered in soil to help insulate and tapered towards the bottom to help with any melt water run off. They had extra thick walls also helping with insulation. This allowed ice to be stored for use in the warmer months. There would have been a couple of doors in that entranceway to also help insulate.

@robertwinsper74093 ай бұрын
That's exactly what it is. I used to play in one as a kid. It was in the grounds of a local stately home. It featured a hole in the side of the dome which led to a chute so that ice could be taken off the adjacent lake and dropped straight into the ice chamber. To add to its magic the access tunnel had been blocked off, you had to climb in through a hole in the ground between tree roots, very Hobbity.

@SelectTaxi243 ай бұрын
Not much ice in UK unfortunately 😢
@dieselbushcraft12993 ай бұрын
Definitely an ice house, easily a couple of hundred years old. During the winters, when they had proper winters ice would be collected from local lakes and would be placed in the ice houses. With the doors kept closed ice would last throughout the year as it was tightly stacked and the pits would be pretty deep too. The earth around them made the perfect insulation. Most large estates would have one.
