Reading though the comments I don't think it can be overstated how much you help those who are travelling on difficult roads and with their mental health. Thank you. I look forward to all of your videos and enjoy revisiting your older content. Don't even get me started with the cooking. I am 75 and am a bit over cooking but you make it look so simple that I am drawn to make some of your dishes. Anyway best wishes from the East coast of Australia and the sub tropics. I think we will miss Spring in our part of the world and head for Summer. You videos snow camping will be all I need to feel cool.

Can we just stop and appreciate two items here. 1. Andy continues to put out such quality content time and time again. Well done! Thanks for the entertainment from the states. We arent all as bad as the world thinks . 2. Generations before us were far more advanced than some often give credit to. Something which is seemingly so simple to build, such as a bridge, has held up for centuries, and they knew that the arch design was much stronger than other formations.
@jeromethiel4323
@jeromethiel4323 3 ай бұрын
The arch is an excellent example of materials engineering. Stone is very strong under compressive load, but terrible under tensile load. An arch is a way to convert tensile stress (a straight lintel stone) into compressive stress (an arch). The harder you pull down on an arch, the more compressive load you put into the stone. Oddly, some ancient civilizations never thought of arches. The Egyptians spring to mind. I don't think i have seen a single arch anywhere in ancient Egyptian architecture. I am sure if i am incorrect, someone will comment! ^-^

True. I live close to an aprox 2000 yo roman stone bridge (and aquaducts) where the legions would pass on the way up through Europe. Despite negligence and time etc all still stands. On the other hand, our main road through the city has been redone twice in the last 15 years, despite modern architects, materials, computers etc 😊

I don't think people realise the effort put in to actually film these and get the shots like walking up the hill and driving in to the area etc etc. It's so seemless and natural that people just take it for granted. But Andy films all these on his own. When you see him walking down the hill for example he's already walked it once. Set up the camera, just so he can film himself walking back up it just so he can show us on the video. Same with the morning shots of him rising and stepping out of his tent for the first time. But secret's out. He's already been out and set up the camera so he can film and show us him theoretically stepping out first thing in the morning. It's all done to add depth and aid the viewing experience for us the viewer. Nothing but respect for the dude. Cheers Andy. Absolutely love this channel👏👏👏

Yeah I used to work in a big estate and this looks like the ice house there. They were usually built underground. The circular shape was to hold the cold in, corners lead to a larger surface area. usually domed at the top and covered in soil to help insulate and tapered towards the bottom to help with any melt water run off. They had extra thick walls also helping with insulation. This allowed ice to be stored for use in the warmer months. There would have been a couple of doors in that entranceway to also help insulate.

It's an Icehouse Andy. All estates had them the lake would freeze in winter and the ice would be harvested and with the Icehouse being below ground level it kept the ice frozen and was used for drinks and cooking.😄

That's exactly what it is. I used to play in one as a kid. It was in the grounds of a local stately home. It featured a hole in the side of the dome which led to a chute so that ice could be taken off the adjacent lake and dropped straight into the ice chamber. To add to its magic the access tunnel had been blocked off, you had to climb in through a hole in the ground between tree roots, very Hobbity.

Definitely an ice house, easily a couple of hundred years old. During the winters, when they had proper winters ice would be collected from local lakes and would be placed in the ice houses. With the doors kept closed ice would last throughout the year as it was tightly stacked and the pits would be pretty deep too. The earth around them made the perfect insulation. Most large estates would have one.

Thanks Andy! We love your creative camping ideas! We would never have thought about keeping ice through the summer when you can just step up to the fridge and get ice water! The history makes me appreciate the conveniences we have now! The food you prepare causes a lot of drooling! We appreciate all the work that goes into these videos! Love from Kent County, Michigan!

Loved the video as always. I did have a cold shiver watching this video as my Nan used to make Pork and Beans. However hers was a little different to yours, hers had a curry base (make as hot or not as you like). The recipe has been passed down from my Nan to my mother and now to me.

The little underground domed building looks like an ice house - if so it would have had ice taken from ponds in winter inside it, which will have been used for refrigeration at some or other big house - ice is reputed to have lasted up to 12 months inside them

@@richardjones3303 It reminded me of the ice house in Tatton Park (Cheshire), that I always wanted to explore as a kid but the entrance was barred :(

Yep! Was going to say this, too! For those that don't know what an ice house is: it is basically the forerunner of the fridge. You stock it up with food and ice, and it stays cold until the ice melts. Or you can just add more ice!!

I so enjoy watching your videos Andy. They are shot so professionally. Your calming voice is so soothing. I love to watch you create meals too. This site was amazing i so appreciate architecture. The arch is beautiful and the little tunnel structure is wonderful. All those beautiful bricks and stones laid to make them. Such a wonderful camp site 😊 Thank you so much Andy.

This is my all time favourite spot you've been to, so far! Beautiful! You seem to favour the lighter, more open view, but my eyes are drawn to the "darker" side! I can only imagine the people who have traveled that road, a thousand years ago. I want to explore! To feel like I'm back in time!

Andy, it must be an English thing to have beans on toast. I'm from Seattle, Washington, USA and my mate is from Cradley Heath, Birmingham. He loves beans on toast and eats if often, and that just isn't something that we do here in the states that I'm aware of. But after watching you prepare yours in this video, I'll certainly give it a try; sans onion and garlic as I have a severe allergy to both and don't want to wind up in hospital over a meal I want to try. lol Thanks again for taking us with you on yet another wonderful adventure. Keep 'em coming.

Every time we get a shot of Andy walking up a hill, or crossing a river I think, Poor Andy had to do that twice, just to set the camera up on the other side. some amazing shots though, all that was missing from the bridge view was medieval flaming torches on the walls under the bridge and you've got the scene to a medieval drama. Nice work Andy. Thanks.

This was a cool spot you found Andy! This would have made a nice spooky Halloween video, but I'm sure you have something lined up for us. Great camping 👍

Love this setup. A good example of making use of what's around you. I agree with you, the bean recipe would go nicely with a big slab of Texas-honeysweet cornbread.
