Many displacement transducers are made using this principle. Are used in automotive construction industry, even the hard drive platters are measured with such transducers. They have very high resolution up to 0.1 um .

This should do the trick: www.alibaba.com/product-detail/R4X12-High-Permeability-NiZn-Ferrite-Rod_60263210228.html MnZn ferrite rods probably would be even better than NiZn rods for this type of application. (for posterity)
