Linear Variable Differential Transformer or LVDT is a motion sensor that is used to convert the displacement to some electrical signals. They are widely used in aircraft for navigation systems and in nuclear reactors for measuring fuel levels.
LVDT is based on the principle of mutual inductance. It consists of a hollow cylinder on which a primary coil through which current is passed, and two secondary coils are wound. A rod is inserted between it, as the rod moves inside the hollow cylinder an emf is generated accordingly. The output emf helps us in keeping a track of the motion.
