Greg, I just purchased my first laptop the M1 MacBook Pro 13, and since getting it as a laptop to use for traveling, I have used it for everything and I have not touched my Dell G7 7500 with 64GB 4K Old screen. So I am not ready to give up my custom. desktop, but in the future, I may for an iMac.

Greg, do you know if there are any other keyboards with raised keys that click like a typewriter which would be compatible to this 24-inch iMac? Also, the basic model has only one fan. Most people don't understand the Mac system. The system needs to be reset every day for best performance. To do this simply turn your computer off every night This clears and resets the nvram and base OS so, at restart in the morning, your working with a fresh system. Your system will perform much better using this method. I use my 8x8 iMac for graphics processing daily and have no issues with slow down or bogs.

Why wouldnt a Thunderbolt hub fix that problem? I think a lot of people are looking at this (being the fastest Mac right now) as being too limited...but these aren't for the power user...they are for the vast majority of users who just use it for Netflix, email and social media. These are GREAT for that kind of PC! YOUR Mac hasn't been announced yet. :)

@@johnnemesh5459 And even then it is still more than ample for many power users. Adobe have recently announced that Adobe Illustrator and InDesign have huge performance boosts running natively on M1. It is only extreme Pro cases like VERY high res video files that are longer and some other extreme Pro uses that more than the M1 is needed. It is very powerful and versatile as it is. Not for gaming of course!

@@johnnemesh5459 they still do more than netflix, cmon. You can edit photos and movies on it no problem if its 1080 p 60fps or small 4k clips. Also you can game on it too. Great for students making ppt presentations or writing reports on it. Also good as music editor with those great speakers plus maybe awesome for video conferencing. It covers 99% of people's need

I think 64GB Ram witj 10 core CPU and 128 core GPU plus media engine that can run multiple 8K streams plus the laptop being able to power 4 monitors is enough. It is probably the most powerful laptop that can last 20 hours and charge 50% in 30 minutes

Sorry, but the iMac should come with an adjustable stand that can be easily replaced with a mount. That's just monitor 101. If you need to put your iMac on a stack of books in order to not get a headache, that's just poor design.

Yep. Style over substance. It's always been that way with Apple. My wife's 15 year old iMac looks much the same as the new model, and all the connections are hidden behind, with no adjustable stand. 15 years of progress in internals, almost no progress in practicality. Unbelievable.

had mine for a month now working in professional video/audio and it's worked mostly well. a large portion of my plugins are unusable. some companies say they're working on it, some aren't even bothering. it's a mixed bag. in some ways, my ancient 2011 imac with upgraded 20gb ram ran way better

The lack of ports is my biggest issue. All design aesthetics go out the window once you have dongles or docks. I'd rather look at the bezel/chin all day than a dock and I'm the only one still using usb3? I'll see what the 27/32 iMac brings but leaning towards getting the 2020 i7 iMac to replace my 2014 i7.

I bought a used 2017 i7 with a 1TB SSD for $750. Had to buy two sticks of ram to get it to 32gb. I had bought the refurbed 2020 with only a 500GB SSD for around 1800-1900 but sent it back. Wasn't worth $1000 for a very unnoticeable performance gain. @@piccalillipit9211

I work with about 10 to 12 hours of footage for a final video of about ore hour. I work with my 2011 iMac 21.5" with a 1 TB SSD and the old FCP 7. New Macs and FCPX simply are NOT designed for very long video footage editing. That's it.

Some front facing ports (usb, SD card etc) in the base of the stand would make the iMac so much more functional for daily use and not interfere with aesthetics. I hate flipping the machine around every time I need to import something non-wirelessly.

We upgraded everyone in this house to M1 last year. 4 M1 MacBook Airs, and 1 M1 iMac for $1499. It is working out well, I can do my all my storyboard stuff on the Air, then when it is time for 3D sculpting and coding, I move over to the iMac simply due to the bigger screen and the built in fans help with heavier lifting.

Your point about the ports is a valid one, especially since Macs always seem to have a wifi clash with printers. I can never get any of my printers to respond to my Macs over wifi, I always have to connect them via USB.

No it’s final cut which is apple made and optimized for M1. Again my problems, I don’t think most people will run into but it’s just a constraint of the 16gb of memory.

I'm in the same boat (profession) - but I decided to switch back to PC. I've been a loyal iMac user for the past decade (2011, 2013, 2015, 2019 - always fully spec'ed - upgraded RAM myself though) but considering you can't do this anymore and Apple charging a fortune for upgrades - i just can get a way more powerful (multi-core performance) setup for the same price (incl. a monitor) if I ditch Apple. Yes, I won't have a sexy looking setup anymore - but I use my computer for work, which excludes admiring its beauty. Double the core count and RAM is preferable. I'll dearly miss FC and LPX but hey, Adobe products work fine on Windows, so I guess I'll just use Premiere and Audition from now on. It's an economical decision.

I have a blue one and I love it ....there is nothing wrong with it even when the screen is black ....the m1 is fast the speakers are fantastic ... its not promoted as a pro product and if someone needs one for professional purposes would do there research before buying ...I think you heading is a little over the top .

Im considering the midtear imac. im currently on a imac 27 i5. Its so loud in the studio, so im considering the new imac, which is faster as well. I mainly use the pc more for logic pro in my home studio. Recently I moved all of my logic files over to a mycloud (non ssd) drive bank. So im calling the files from those drives. Should the % be more generous, of course it should but you know it's 🍎, they play their cards: "we've a huge demand" so they don't need to do much more to sell those refurbished products. On my side, I feel happy about keeping myself grounded when it comes to how to spend my money. It took me a while to realize: I don't need M1 pro or max processors to cover my real needs. I’m an architect, and I can definitively say Get a PC if you’re handling that kind of software, the M1 chip is just NOT worth the money, especially when it comes to its rendering speeds. I have both an m1 Mac Pro and a pc, and god is Mac a pale in comparison for that use.

If you do any kind of visual work -- whether it's Photoshop, Sketch, Illustrator, Final Cut etc -- I can't stress this enough: get a minimum of 16GB RAM. 8 GB just is not enough. It shouldn't even be an option. It's only an option because that way, Apple get to charge USD$200 for the extra RAM, which leads to extreme profits. Same goes fora 256GB SSD. It shouldn't even be an option. Something like Xcode (+ simulators) will probably take up a quarter to a third of that drive alone.

I do photography work, ill be editing lots of photos when i get a new iMac. The 16GB isn't a deal breaker but only a slight concern when i think about large exports and longevity of the machine. Im guessing I'm gonna have this for like 5 or 6 years before i upgrade again. I'm in 2 minds weather to get one now or wait till march and see what apple have to offer for a "pro" version. I agree almost completely.....my advice however, would be to go with a base M1 Mini, a middling 32 inch 4K display along with a budget 512 Thunderbolt SSD and a LogiTech kybd/mouse combo. Better overall Value...cheaper (including the Display and periphs) than the mid-tier iMac.....and not a much bigger footprint with flexibility and a more practical upgrade path....and did I say "cheaper" ??? ......add decent pair of Speakers and Mini M1 setup can be had for around $1199.00 from AMZ

Upgrading would be a piece of cake….as faster, newer Minis become available, all you need to do is replace your current one and you can be up and running in minutes….if you buy a half way decent 4k display, this is the least expensive way to go. This is my intention. I will hand down my old base M1 to a family member or post it for re-sale to defray the cost of the new one.

I would say Ram because you can always buy an external SSD to expand storage. with RAM you're stuck with the choice you make

With 16 gigs of RAM you therefore double the memory. It is definitely the best choice. Because for storage you can connect an excellent external ssd of 1 or 2 T for ENORMOUSLY cheaper than the upgrade of the ssd from Apple (for example the T5 or T7 from samsung). The memory is what will affect performance the most, not the ssd at all.

I have been using 16GB of RAM with my current laptop for 8 years so I would not want to go less than that in a new computer even though I'm retired now and don't need a business computer. I would also like to future proof a new computer. My wife's laptop has only 4GB of RAM and her getting 8GB would be fine since she doesn't use her computer everyday and she just does email and bill pay mostly. I do mostly video streaming on KZbin but occasionally do some web maintenance with Visual Studio 2019 Community. I also would love to move up to at least 4K video. 1080 is nice but I'm ready to move up.

The port thing is fascinating. All the speculation surrounding the 14/16 MBP suggest a broader port selection. Yet Apple just dolled out a 24” iMac with either 2 or 4 USB-C type ports. Logically it doesn’t make sense to ignore legacy ports on a desk top while including them on a laptop. Is Apple going to leverage ports with the Pro lineup or is this all just a head fake and bad intel. Time will tell.

Gerda, I have not been able to add Photoshop after hours of trying and searching forums for hints. The app wants Intel processor. Rosetta 2 is supposed to bridge that gap, but so far it has not. heartbreaking.

@@suzannewinz1099 actually I bought the new iMac a couple of weeks ago and I didn't have any problems downloading any of the Adobe Creative apps. And they work great, even if some are not 'native' to the new iMac. Maybe Photoshop will be even faster as soon as it will have a native version. Maybe you're having another type of problem? Are you subscribed to Adobe Creative Cloud? When it comes to my previous concern about a potential lag in digital painting: huge size and very textured brushes do have a tiny bit of lag in the current non-native Photoshop but it's really minor. Mostly works perfectly. (this is 8-core CPU/GPU, 1TB storage, 16GB RAM). My drawing tablet is a simple Wacom, around 12 years old.

I have a 2017 iMac 27" and it keeps getting the wheel of death while watching movies or GamePass football replay as well as going out of focus. Don't know if it's the computer or the latest update but makes me think about trading for the new entry model. I only need a port for my printer and backup disk so two is not a problem. I also got the wheel once while watching this video. I only use it for movies and social media. Do you think it is enough for movies and games without these problems or could only having the one fan be a problem here? Thanks!

Seems very expensive for so many inbuilt issues, and being a non-pro model and having to pay extra for extra ports, which you need as Apple now have so many peripherals. Design over content comes to mind with Apple.

In short: if you need a system with more than 16GB of RAM, the M1 chipset does not magically negate the memory requirements of larger projects. There are workarounds for the ports. Not the most elegant for a company that places emphasis on design and aesthetics, and at a certain point, function supersedes form, but they are available.

I have 2 iPads the mini and the large. I just purchased on Amazon the 24” M1 iMac Apple desktop with 8 core gpu. with 256 gigs. $1499 is a fair price to unload my old Dell PC. THANK YOU for your advice ! Being 72 years old disabled Vietnam vet, I have to figure out how to transfer from my Dell pc my pictures and music to my new Apple M1 when I get the iMac delivered on Wensday. Any advice Greg ?

If I am wanting an iMac with a big screen that can be used for school work, a little bit of editing, and a little bit of music and video watching, should I wait for the next iMac, get the current iMac, or get the old iMac that still on the market….???? Get the current one. It will easily handle everything you’re doing and 5 years from now you’ll still be getting support from , where as support for the Intel might be iffy. I have an old 27” 2010 iMac but I’m leaning towards the 24”. I think I will get used to the smaller size quickly and it will certainly be cheaper

@@MarkHolmes I have a 2014 iMac with a 1TB HD and 24 Gb RAM and saw that the newest MAC OS won't work with my vintage. I would like to stay with Macs and have been impressed with what I have read about the M1 chipset. I have never had a single hardware problem with my current setup. You have a 2010 model and are looking to get a newer model. Are you doing that because of problems creeping in?

@@gailboardman624 yes, mine is getting dog slow no matter what I do. EtreCheck suggests my hard drive is failing. I have plenty of space left on my 1TB hard drive but programs are super slow to open (safari takes over 2 minutes to open). My graphics display is failing as well (random pixels appear all over the screen from time to time, especially under heavy load such as in the Photos app

Video editing will be problematic, and you'll feel the memory bite if you work with a lot of images, say in Sketch or Photoshop. Also: development in Xcode using the Simulators (or SwiftUI Previews) will become very problematic with only 8GB.

@@w0mblemania i switched from latest Ryzen 5 w/ RTX 1660 Sport and 64GB of ram with Davinci Resolve, Photoshop Lightroom, this 8k machine can handle 4k timeline with 2 streams and 1-2 supers or fusions (h264 mp4). Safari and 2-3 ytilitie apps in background it works fine, scrubing on 4k 24fps timeline is smooth and never experienced memory problem at all it can even stream 2 layers of 8k proress clips on 4k 24fps with a quarter preview project which was ubable to do on my last machine however, i m not a super multi tasking guy. only 1 main program and 1-2 utilities with a single tab safari is my going workflow i found only 1 issue in memory issue when i did 1 conference with OBS streaming 4 1080p to different destinations while capturing 1 Chrome windows and 4 windows of Safari on top with audio recording it was lacked while switching through destops (got rid of 4 safari and audio recordings to another Macbook Air and all done) not saying this machine is for pro level production but it is fine on a normal creative task with just 8GB ram as soon as you use native silicon apps as many as you can native apps such as the latest Resolve works with OS to optimize memmory usage

I plan to get the one with 512 GB internal SSD and then get a 1 TB external SSD for data storage. My current iMac (2013 model) has a 1 TB drive in it and I'm only using 106 GB of it.

I want the base model M1 iMac 24 inch because it’s minimal and it has 2 ports ( so I can use for thunderbolt hdmi and plug in my Apple devices) and I don’t need Ethernet because I’m a wireless guy. I love the blue color that’s matches my room and it’s a great size. I think the iMac is aimed towards average users and college student/secondary education. Touch ID is great for the first iMac ever.

Greg, I got the $1500 model with 8gb. Just use it for standard surfing and KZbin videos and it's quite fine. The 2012 21.5" Imac I'm coming from, with an added ssd, also compares quite favorably with watching videos and surfing. Since day one, that model was a dog with its laptop class HD. The SSD really perked things up, so much so, I might even return the new Imac. Still thinking things through. Randy-IL

Honestly, i don't think it holds up for intense work but lets be real... Folks who do serious computing tend not to use an Imac. Nowadays they're more the home pc sat on a table that different family members use for their various needs like surfing, video calls, youtube or class work with the kids. They're not bad but i wouldn't spend for the highest specced model tbh.

I have a mid 2011 iMac 🖥 with upgraded ssd and yeah not crazy fast but fast enough to do anything online besides gaming beyond like counter strike. Use it mostly now to stream movies, shows, big fights to my Apple TV. I imagine an M1 is light years ahead type upgrade.

editing h264 or any compressed codec is a no go because this are transport codecs and not ment for editing - go to an intermediate codec like apple pro res 422 LT etc. - then review again
