From my perspective of working as an engineer for over 35 years (now retired) Apple really missed the mark of integrity for not disclosing that the base model only has one fan. From a design perspective I don't understand why Apple chose to delete the fan that cools the M1 processor. Why not delete the other (left side) fan if it was so important to save a few dollars. (Perhaps that cooling fan is more important??) It appears that Apple purposely removed a fan that would impact performance. Apple should have revealed that in their marketing literature. As such, I give Apple a "D" in integrity. Thanks for your video and for revealing the shortcomings. Apple should immediately apologize for not informing potential customers of loss in performance of the base model.
@transitengineer3 жыл бұрын
I agree with your comments 100 percent. Have been using Apple desktop computers since 1996, and I am not suprised by their actions. Live long enough and, we have all seen this move a million times before: for example come out with a space gray Intel mac mini but, remove its GPU so it will not power your own new 30-inch $5,000 display, then upgrade your operating system, and your top of the line Blackmagic eGPU has to be removed from your Apple web site because, it no longer works properly with the new operating system...give me a break.
@aronfaine94573 жыл бұрын
you might be forgetting that the macbook air has no fans at all and nobody complained about its performance. also, the left side fan can blow air throughout the entire logic board and provide better overall cooling at the cost of less direct cooling for the processor, but since arm doesnt need active cooling, its a moot point. this is designed to be a quiet, aesthetic, everyday machine. losing one fan should not be a deal breaker, if you want the best performance for m1, get the mac mini or wait for a actual professional device with m1x.
@aronfaine94573 жыл бұрын
@@cameronbosch1213 ....and? If the macbook air limits itself to remain in thermal constraints, thats smart because of the fact a laptop is likely on your lap when used. No one likes roasted nuts. But on a desktop, which you wont be touching, the temperature of the case means nothing. As this is designed to be an aesthetic and functional computer, it can afford to run a little hot, and subsequently have a hot chassis, to have a quieter or less powerful cooling system. If you are doing anything that pushes the chip to the point it gets too hot and throttles, or the single cooling fan isnt enough.....why did you buy the base model of the computer not meant for professionals? I purchased the 13 inch macbook pro base model, I had no use for it as a pro machine, I only purchased it instead of the macbook air because the 13 inch pro has signifncantly better battery life and a better screen. That was worth the extra money. Having active cooling and better performance was a bonus, but I wasnt using all of the power the Air could offer in the first place.
@aronfaine94573 жыл бұрын
@@cameronbosch1213 that's a bit of a reach, on your part. It's not going to fry itself. Apple is known for sacrificing cooling in favor of less noise, but the machines have been running all this time despite high temps. If you want to do some video editing for fun, it's not going to be an issue. Even if you do it often. Apple has not forgotten professionals. M1 is new and not ready for high performance requirements. But ARM is a scalable technology and can be adapted to any need. It's just taking time. You may not like Apple, but they haven't forgotten the pro creator business.
@aronfaine94573 жыл бұрын
@Hardware Software again you're kind of forgetting that the M1 can be passively cooled. The left side fan does blow air throughout the logic board and keeps things from getting to critical temps, around 110 degrees Celsius. 90 is hot, but not critical, and again since the iMac is a desktop, no one is touching the chassis, at least not for a long time, maybe just to grab it and plug in a cable. It's not a "wireless cooler," it's just chassis cooling. Not as effective as directly attached to a heat pipe, but it doesn't need to be. Also, the Mac mini is priced as a cheap and easy way to get a Mac but they were never weak. They never had dedicated graphics, but they made excellent machines for standard video editing, Photoshop, and also made good servers. People buy multiple Mac minis and send them off to sever rack companies to be connected together as batch render farms. It makes sense for the Mac mini to be a better pro machine than the iMac, despite neither having pro in the name.

On the "best sound ever from an iMac" comment - well... there are a few points to consider: 1. Balance across the frequency range 2. Loudness 3. Resolution of sound (how well one can discern sounds in playback, a.k.a. fidelity) I would certainly agree that the new iMac is not anywhere near as loud as the older iMac and iMac Pro. However, (putting my producer hat on), I think the other two qualities - balance across the frequency range and resolution - on the new iMac ARE better. To be sure, I would not want to try to mix productions on the iMac speakers in normal day-to-day work. BUT! I would definitely want to use the iMac's speakers for test playbacks to see how balanced my recording is when NOT played on pro monitors. I think the speakers are very accurate and that there is an even response across the frequency spectrum. A lot of our evaluation of "how good something sounds" is based these days on two or three factors, the main being loudness and how much bass you can hear (or feel). To my ears, the older iMacs are a bit "bass weighted" so they can bring out bass sounds a bit more strongly that would be expected for such small speaker space, and so they will seem to have more "punch" when playing popular music (and dance and EDM, which I even make, myself), but *in my own opinion*, I prefer an even balance across the frequency spectrum - what we often call a "flat" response, because that is better to base the quality of a mix from. Anyone can turn up the bass on their own, after all. So, this is just my ruble, but I think I can understand the basis upon which Apple makes its claim. Admittedly, it comes across strange to most of us because this machine certainly does not have the punch or the bass, but, I like the accuracy I hear. Great video as always, Vadim!
@MaxTechOfficial3 жыл бұрын
Thanks (this vid is Max but it’s hard to know) I totally agree on volume, but to my ears even at similar volumes the 2020 27” iMac sounds better.. I even re-listened to them yesterday to make sure but that’s my opinion.
@SeraphimHanischMusic3 жыл бұрын
@@MaxTechOfficial True - I do not know who is whom) Max, yes. Possibly too, the act of listening to speakers through miking that is rather open - it is hard to discern. It might be interesting if there are frequency response charts for these machines, but I doubt Apple makes these available. It could be done with real good mics set at an established fixed distance from the machine and then recorded. If you have two omnidirectional microphones this would probably work best... say at three or four feet from the machine, center and with a set distance apart. I might try about 15-20cm separation (the distance between our ears) for the mics. Just another ruble. I think it would be an interesting test, but for the sake of the consumer or prosumer, it would probably be a lot less important than the other capabilities of these machines. I am truly impressed with the scope and depth of these reviews, and I am eager to see what the WWDC brings for news tomorrow. I work with an i9 15" MacBook Pro and it does a fine job, but I can push it to CPU overload in Pro Tools too easily, and I want to really extend my tracking. Also, I would like to be able to sent 4K at 60Hz to my screen instead of 30Hz which is all this setup seems to allow. Let's see what happens! Have a great day and thank you for your reply!

@@Diminish12 its been fine - I did get a hub so I could use my circa 2015 Apple USB keyboard which has more key travel than Apple's newer generation keyboards, all of which I don't like. I have a 2nd gen Magic keyboard that I use w/my iPad. It's OK. it has more key travel than the one that comes w/the M1 Mac. I'm almost 69 years old and can't get used to minimal key travel. I use the keyboard it came with for only one task, pressing the touch ID button. So I have two keyboards, one legacy USB keyboard in front of me and one sitting on the M1 stand w/in reach to press Touch ID. I don't see an issue w/the four ports. The issue with the ports and the noiser fan is with the lower end model. I got a powered hub because it was more convenient than buying usb-c to lightening cables.

For Launchpad, go to your Preferences and then Mission Control. From here you select Hot Corners. This is way faster than a button and that's what I've been using for years for things like Start Screensaver, Show Desktop, Mission Control. I laugh when people complain about the magic mouse charge port and not being able to use it when it's charging. The mouse lasts 2-3 months on a charge, and 10 minutes of charging will give you a days of use if you somehow forget. A few times a year, plug in overnight and you will be good to go. So people want to wreck the daily design and aesthetics for something that is only used a few times a year. It's not like an electric car that needs to be plugged in every night or a lawn that needs to be cut every week.
@cjpatterson213 жыл бұрын
For your launchpad, just set up hot corners. I set up the bottom left corner of the screen for launch pad so I just swipe my mouse down there and I can easily access all the apps. Much faster than the keyboard shortcut anyway, in my opinion.

I bought this 21.5" Intel iMac in summer of 2020 after some hard saving to try and get back into the world of Mac after a few years away (last was entry level model purchased in late 2010). Of course, I went on to learn the timing was unlucky as later that year they refreshed the line with SSDs as standard then in 2021 dropped the bombshell that was the new M1 iMac. Needless to say, I knew this was gonna be a gamechanger so I've been saving my rear off for almost a year and it's finally happened. On Sunday night, I purchased the mid-tier 24" iMac with trackpad and 16GB RAM for extra longevity (this one I actually expect to hold onto at least until support is dropped). Didn't need the larger SSD and that's the only different with the top end. It's coming on Thursday. I can't wait. Sucks that the included stickers are too big for the front but maybe some that came with iPhone might be small enough. That's the only design choice that I really dislike. The fact that they chose to remove the logo from the front as that area just feels naked without it. It makes the chin stand out more.

I started up Pages and Numbers and both app icons bounced 3 times before getting me to the first screen. Was not slow but wasn't as fast as I assumed it would be. When I got home I launched both apps on my 2019 iMac 27". No bouncing icons, the apps just opened. What gives? Thanks for your thoughts/comments.

I just wish Apple made a 32” version, I would buy one… or a Mac Mini with a 32” Apple-made affordable display. 24” is just too small.

I love my new 24" iMac. The camera is horrible though. It makes you look yellow. I hate buying peripherals but I'm definitely going to have to buy an external camera. It's just too bad for Zoom. It's a shame bc otherwise it's a fantastic little computer & I'm more than happy w everything else. Nice review btw but WAY TOO MANY ads. I'll avoid from now on.

Hi, if the MacBook Air M1 doesn't have a fan, does the Imac with the M1 have a fan? Both are not pro options.

Considering Apple’s high cost for storage and RAM, why in the hell can’t they put in a MicroSD slot?? Especially on a COMPUTER. My older MacBooks have a SD slot as does my older Mini. I use a magnetic adapter with a mSD card reader on my M1Air, but it shouldn’t be so. And especially on a desktop like the iMac. Going to wait to see what they do on the M1x before I buy anything.

Would it be a mistake to use the price difference between base and mid-tier for 16gb ram instead of going for mid-tier? I heard another reviewer say that the m1 chip doesn't get that hot.

How do you know what version has one or two fans??? Thanks for your help.
@karthikeyathotamsetty17413 жыл бұрын
Apple cud have removed the left fan instead of the right fan, like how they did it for the MacBook Air giving it a fan with no heat pipe and making it bad intentionally.

Newbie question: If I can only upgrade ONE item on my next M1 iMac: should I get a 16GB Ram, or get a 8-core GPU? I'm not a hardcore gamer but I do play LoL, DOTA2, Heros of the Storm occasionally, but i rarely (almost never) do any video editing. And of course I do streaming and I usually have more than 10 open tabs on my browsers all the times. So what should I spend my extra $200 on? RAM or 8-core GPU?

Totally agree about the speakers in the new iMac. I just got mine a few days ago, and the speakers are very disappointing and sound terrible to me. The bass is muffled and the treble is very tinny and harsh. Horrible!

Just a note on the Ethernet upgrade, WiFi is only FAST if you have router that can match the fast speeds. People the base model is good for, often won’t have this.

@Bubbles-od2tv3 жыл бұрын
Me too, the pastel colors don’t do it for me. I’d love a silver chin with the blue back. I guess that means I’ll have to get the silver, although it feels the most boring.
@DarkWildSaison2 жыл бұрын
The chin also puts the actual screen higher up without making the stand look disproportionally long. It’s actually a good design choice.

I got the top spec M1 iMac for photography work. I sold my mid range 2017 27" iMac as I got the M1 MacBook Air and was simply blown away by it! I love this machine! But yeah the lack of ports are a bit crappy. Having adaptors isn't the end of the world though. The white bezels I'm not madly in love with. I wish they had kept the purple variant (the one I have) that deep purple at the back of the computer, its so nice. The lilac at the front is ok. If apple hadn't did this with the colour options I totally would have got the red colour, but that salmon orange/pink at the front is gross lol. Great video, fair and accurate I reckon. Just think what the next 5 years will be like!!! Excited much? lol. I am such a geek.
@KerrieRedgate2 жыл бұрын
I agree about that salmon pink colour. It looks sickening against the otherwise gorgeous orange back, and the red one. Total mismatch. The chins should really have been kept to a light grey, as anyone working with colour (photo, graphics, film, etc) would inevitably be conditioned subconsciously to harmonising their work with the chin colour. I’ve just ordered an upgraded higher end silver model for that reason.
