This isn't Monroe County parks, like you all are more familiar. This is Livingston County, and this park is actually on the Genesee river opposite to Letchworth park. There are three pit toilet buildings (open year round) and one toilet building (currently closed) located here. Besides having newer stuff, this park is very primitive and cool!

These are absolutely disgusting and worthless! Worst thing ever! They should at least get Kohler, or TOTO.

I’ve seen pit toilets before, there’s this one restroom at a local lake that had actual toilets connect to vaults.

@@Modern_Stuff I don’t think it’s in our state Modern Stuff, because the signs would’ve looked different, because most of the pit toilets we got have aluminum signs rather than the generic ones

Those pit "toilets" are absolutely disgusting and worthless. I can't imagine even using any of those vile garbage piles.

I'd always prefer a flush toilet, but a lot of campgrounds are out where there is no city water or grid power. A pit toilet is better than no toilet at all. Actually, I think a plastic RV toilet would be worse for me. lol.

The boy scout camp I go to every summer in the Adirondack has all non-flushing bathrooms for the campers (mix of outhouses and porta potties). There are two toilet buildings but they are for adults and staff only. Despite the inconvenience of having to use them, I’ve cared less about using them as I’ve grown older. Must be an experience thing

The parks in my hometown, some of the restrooms have vault toilets back then and now they turned all of them into running water

At our suburban parks in Northeast Tarrant County, Texas, we have flush toilets in the spring and summer months. Portajohns in autumn and winter.

Nice park! I've never seen a multi stall unisex toilet before! In the Porcupine Mountains State park, there are a couple of multi stall restroom buildings that have Clivus Multrum composting toilets. I can remember checking out books at the library about 20 years ago when I first got fascinated with building. I read about the Clivus Multrum in books from the 70s when composting toilets were a new thing. Vault toilets are everywhere in MI parks too. Usually only the "state parks" have modern restrooms but there are dozens more "state forest" and "National Forest" camp grounds that are more rustic with hand pumps and outhouses. As much as I camped growing up, it seems like we always stayed at the rustic campgrounds.

vintage kohler Actually vault toilets aren’t too common here, or at least I’m not that used to seeing them. Almost all of the state parks in WNY have either flush toilets or no restrooms, I can only think of two that have pit toilets. Even the county parks in my city all have flush toilets. I’ve only seen two vault toilets in our county parks as well. Since this county is much less habituated, i wasn’t too surprised to see these though.

@@infotoiletsroc178 Yeah that makes since. Pit toilets are everywhere in Northern MI at boat launches, village parks and such. I think there is generally not as much public funding for modern toilets in my area, and many places are remote enough to not have any city water or grid power available. Some camp grounds are many miles from power. NY is definitely more populated, so there is probably much more money for public works, which is nice!

vintage kohler Well I can say that for my area at least. After looking into it a little more, I saw that a few areas the two largest parks, Allegheny and Harriman state parks, along with many of the DEC campgrounds and day use areas in the Adirondack region, have pit toilets. This does make sense because of the vast forestry area that these park areas are located in. The state parks near my area that I have filmed in on the other hand, are all fairly close to some sort of civilization so they have modern plumbing services. I’m curious to hit the adirondacks this summer and check out some of those places up there!

Modern public pit toilets are usually contracted with a company that cleans them out periodically. Being courteous to others and leaving the lid closed when you're finished helps keep the smell down. These "conveniences" are most helpful if one is having a bathroom emergency. They are important if one lives in a drought-stricken area. Going behind a bush can be very unsanitary.
@Flushfax

The lid isn’t closed, in that first bathroom, 4 vault toilets together which is weird and the 2nd one you showed was gross!
@Flushfax

Seriously?!!! Vault toilets do not belong in public restrooms!! I’d rather shit myself in the woods than use something this gross!! And the sewer that the toilet is connected too needs to be all separate, not hooked together!! 🤢 The second vault restroom is absolutely gross!! If I had to pee, simply, I’d pee in a bag or wear 4 masks and pee in the vault toilet!! And seriously, in the first vault toilet restroom, the lids need to be closed so there aren’t any pests!! Did it stink btw?!!

Don't go to any swimming, boating, or picnic areas around lakes, cause that's what's gonna be available for "nature calls". Many state parks have em too.
