Many years ago I read somewhere that emigrating means becoming a foreigner in 2 countries: the country you emigrate TO, and the country you emigrate FROM. That's why many people regret emigrating.

It’s surprising to see someone born and raised in India struggling to adjust. I can understand children having difficulties, but if you truly want to adapt, it might be better to stay in the community you grew up in, reconnect, and blend in, rather than creating a separate expat bubble within India. This approach doesn’t seem very encouraging. As Desi returnees ourselves, we adapted well many years ago. I sense some regret underlying this conversation.

I took a 3 year sabbatical to Kerala, India. Rented out my house, sold my cars and left. The plan was for one year but ended up staying almost 3 years. It was a good experience. I could have made a lot of money and moved up the ladder during that time but money is not everything. Life is short, enjoy on the go.

@@deepakjagadeeshwar9404 it was a super experience. I ate like 16 jackfruits during that time 😂 had a lot of fish. Ate all of my favorite nostalgic items. Even something simple as coconut chutney was amazing over there. So ya took that trip in my early 30s. We’re not in IT so we didn’t bother to look for a job over there. Just enjoyed and stretched that dollar. I had a small rental income stream. That’s about it. Kids were small and it was easy to adjust. They went to international school in Kerala. It was hard leaving actually. Kids wanted to stay in India. I still plan on retiring in India. I don’t think kids will go back but it’s alright. Let them stay wherever they are comfortable. For me it’s the cost of living and man power in India. That’s what we need when we get older. I worked in many hospitals and nursing homes here in the US. These are my views if I'm thinking to go back to India. (Exclude thise who have medical emergency & parents support reasons). Anyone disagrees these factors are not true now?? Are you ready to give this future to your kids?? 1. Water scarcity - tanker water supply and recycled source of water is not reliable and it is not a great future setup for your kids, where life essential is shortage . Especially in bangalore. 2. Road accidents - chance of getting hit in road drive or walk is very high. When you get into accident by mistake a mob will be ready to attack you before you explain, eventhough not your fault. You will be victim one day for sure. 3. When you live abroad for long and go back india, air pollution there will deteriorate your health by 10% as per health scientist. In much polluted cities, family stress increases. 4. Sound pollution we adapt to when we move back, we think it's fine, but nobody considers it as important factor for your mental health. 5. Diversity of educational fields exposure and self thinking ability of kids is missing in most of schools in India. They are like China producing or reinforcing mass literacy. Basically Air, water, health hygiene, quality life is not available in big cities. Majority of peoples decision based on emotions like relations, money exchange value and domestic help. Everyone forgets that we need to give kids a future place where there are basic necessities (air, water, food, safe roads, hygiene) available for next 50 years.
@DesiReturn26 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Yes some of these issues are true (Few points. 5. Lot of improvement in education fields; Please check out some schools) If these are important, please stay abroad. There are lot of families who moved for kids. 1. bringing up kids in a larger family (when parents are not around; there is a larger family to support down the line) 2. Lot of activities for kids in communities 3. Kids social life and growth perspectives. 4. Kids growing up in India can adapt in India or abroad. It depends on what's important for family they decide which place is right for them.

Indias much more flexible I can but not as organized. Certainly if you get a good /better opportunity in India, & live closer to family, a good health insurance, certainly international schools , good community with facilities such as hospitals/ malls/ grocery/pharmacy/laundry service( these days you find communities) with such facilities.

I'd like to know if your guests have returned to India after getting their US citizenship or gone back after an unsuccessful H1B to GC transition attempt. I believe a lot of them do that after acquiring their US citizenship and are hedging their bets as well - it may/may not work, but why not try out. The other reason could be because their kids are closing in on getting to 18 years old and cannot be sponsored through H1B. There's something missing in the entire story....human beings inherently will do what's best and/or convenient for themselves / their families. If Timbuktoo provides an awesome dream for their kids, they will give that place a go too.

I think he has lived in the US for far far too long. 15 years is kind of max you must stay. Now this person is trying to replicate his US style in India, which is not going to work. Also his idea to choose gated community with expats, means he is still not ready for India. He is trying to live in a self made bubble. His main problem is his accent and his kids also probably have a thick accent which is why he feels they will struggle in a local community.

@@DesiReturn Yes indeed, my point is people who are watching this shouldn't get dissuaded, he says we need to join various R2I groups. The R2I groups are full of OCI people putting their kids in IGCSE/IB and their plan is going to be very temporary. This is not true R2I. They have some fascination about bringing their kids to India during their most critical years and then send them again to the US/Europe and they try to replicate their western world in India. For people who want to truly R2I, you need to mix up with locals and behave like a local. This person is just an American with Indian roots. He is not really R2Iing. I would personally not follow most of his advice. I will live in a community full of locals, no western NRIs/OCIs. I will send my daughter to CBSE school with plans to continue college in India. So 100% adaptability with India is needed. And of course no house helps for us. This idea that you want to hire a maid, gardener, driver and live like a upper class person, you will never really be able to associate with the real India. Those are my thoughts.

@@Revhappy829 absolutely! The choice to return seems mostly out of compulsion so the idea of creating a expat club itself shows no willingness or readiness to adapt , if a person born and brought up in India is not able to slip into the community with little or no difficulties how can you expect the kids to adjust , he is not teaching the kids to adjust by living in a US bubble in India . For some one planning the move this video is not helping , I find many foreigners easily adapting to Indian lifestyle and living true Desi lives
